Roy was classically trained. He never wanted any more fame than he deserved. So, he never got into the big spotlight. He knew what he wanted to do, and he did it for the people that wanted to hear/see it. His routines usually had some type of comedy included.
Roy could and did play anything with strings. He was an incredibly skilled picker! There's an episode of the old TV show, The Odd Couple, in which he plays guitar and sings, then plays country banjo, then classical and country violin (fiddle), and then this song as a finale!
I very much enjoyed your reaction to this video! I agree with Roderick that it would be great if you would react to his acoustic performance of this piece. It's pretty amazing.
Many players wrap their thumb over the top. It is not the right way, but it is another way for those who can. I never could use my thumb to fret with. Many grow up learning it and use it.
There is a video of Roy, about 20 years after this, playing it on a 12 string acoustic. It's amazing! Also, he played it on a TV show, the Odd Couple.
12 strings?!
The 12 string version of this he did in the Eighties, because why wouldn't you, is stunning and the video won't trigger epileptic issues.

Trained how. He was taught guitar by his dad
Roy does an interpretation that shows his incredible ability!!
Roy Clark also plays fiddle, banjo, harmonica, and mandolin.
All at the same time??!!
Watch Roy Clark’s acoustic version on The Odd Couple. It’s epic.
