    There was so much novelty in Green Planet. The Dessert Plants episode especially was great. Before Attenborough retires or passes away I really want him to be involved in something epic and academic like Life on Earth, but with the modern production of the Planet series. Something themed around the whole of evolutionary and geological history, but unifies it with the emotional lives of animals that we get in series like Dynasties and Life Story.

    Thank you for this commentary. I've been a renegade for "weeds" for a long time, hoping to inspire people to look at these pioneers as the brilliant lifeforms they are. My favorite pioneer of all time is the goathead (tribulus). Everyone else sees a noxious weed, while I see an intelligent protector and pioneer of disturbed soil. It seems the only places they really thrive are in places such as compacted dirt parking lots, along barren roadways and sidewalks, and other places where people have removed ecological structure to the soil. Think about it: it is nature saying, "I'm recovering from the damages you have done, so leave me be", and when we drive our cars or walk across with our tennis shoes, we carry these seeds with us to other disturbed areas. Tribulus is a low lying vine with a deep tap root. It breaks the compacted soil and deposits a layer of organic material as the plant grows and dies. Once a mulch is established, other seeds may germinate under the protection of Tribulus. Eventually, larger, bushier plants may begin to establish, and ultimately, other plants will overshadow Tribulus and they stop growing there. Along with ants and other burrowing insects, Tribulus is an agent of restoration for soil and all the plant communities which may grow in that soil.

    Although, I would consider there to be a difference between what is called a weed by different people, societies, cultures and fields of work. For example, I would say there is a difference between a serial pioneer species and an non-native invasive species. A pioneer species is one that is potentially native, occurs after a disturbance event and can help retain topsoil and facilitate other species to grow. An invasive species can have similar behavior but exhibits characteristics that can negatively impact native flora and fauna such as producing allopathic chemicals.
    In Agriculture and turf management many native species have traditionally been considered invasive! How that is backfiring…

      The man I bought my house from has, in my opinion, managed to coin the only true and overall valid definition of what a "weed" is: It's quite simply any plant that has managed to spawn and grow in a spot the human caretaker of that spot did not plan for it and does not want it to grow in. That's it. One human may positively hate, say, dandelions, his neighbor may adore them.........the plants don't know or care who regards them weeds or flowers, they just likely luck out if they meet one of the latter. Animals don't care either. So, basically, the concept of "weeds" is a human construct like time, money, possession etc. .....

    • @rminhas4549
      @rminhas4549 3 года назад +3

      @@chriscross5581 I will say that in the case of animals that it is important to have certain species present in an ecosystem. For example in the case of monarch butterflies, if the landowners in a region regard the milkweed as a “weed” then they will likely kill off that plant and make the region unsuitable habitat for the butterfly as it is the sole food source for monarch caterpillars. The same is true for other insects and birds. If a whole region is converted to turf or agricultural monocultures, it destroys habitat. The same goes for specialist pollinators, when one leaves so does the other. But yeah, as far as definitions go, whatever a person thinks is a “weed” can be.

    • @chriscross5581
      @chriscross5581 3 года назад +1

      @@rminhas4549 Can only agree. Bottom line is that the human being ends up as the most invasive one of all species, due to our various attempts to "turn" nature in our favor for whatever the reason, some of them better than others. Weird part of this is the fact that the term "invasive species" is just another human construct, based on a wish on our side for the nature world to not change too much from the one we currently know how to survive in ;)

    Imagine how much he learnt about nature just from reading scripts over and over again on each take of scenes or in a recording booth. I think he would of remember a lot of things about animals and nature (u have to) but over the years it would of probably stuck with him.
    Also personally I think weeds growing on the walls r kinda pretty and how they climb up poles and stuff, definitely made me see them in a different light. Yes they r a nuisance to get rid of but look at the way they grow between the concrete and bricks...that’s pretty cool and no soil. I wonder y is there such thing as weeds? What is the purpose for them? Because everything has a role in life (circle of life)

      My sister defines a weed as any plant that grows where we don't want it to. Which means that any plant that grows and is welcomed is by her definition not a weed.
      Many of the plants that are called weeds in the US were originally brought there from Europe by colonizers as prized salad greens. The dandelion is one of those. 🌼
