There are so many mice (mouse) out there that you could use for designing, but not all mice do the same thing and not all of them are as good as others.
In this video Will Paterson shares his experiences with the best mice he's used over the past five years of his logo design and graphic design career.
If you're looking for a mouse, the Logitech MX 3 mouse will not disappoint. It's an expensive mouse, but it's totally worth the price when you're a creative working from behind a screen.
If you're looking for quality control, the most comfortable and the most feature-rich mouse then look no further! This mouse is the best I've found for all applications of design, from logo design, general graphic design and everything in-between.

As someone whose been using the Logitech MX master 3 for little over a year now, I can concur it's the best mouse I've ever used for design.
The ergonomic design is just amazing, feeling natural AF; especially in circumstances where you might be working in awkward positions i.e a couch or bed (as someone who worked like that for ages, Once upon a time)
Quick Edit: I realize people might be interested in buying a mouse themselves so if anyone's got questions on my thoughts (mayhaps on pros, cons, etc.) on my experience with the mouse till now, feel free to ask away
I’ve been using a MX Master 2 for over 2 years now, and I can also confirm the ‘MX Master Series’ of mouse are the best I’ve ever used. And I’ve been designing for 15 years 👍
is there any significant difference between MX Master 2 and MX Master 3?
@@finestfinest5050 - Not really... 3 has US-C charging, and the mouse scroller is a bit more fancy, but my 2 still has most of features of the 3, like they are virtually 95% the same.
@@finestfinest5050 I think the MX 2 has slightly odder positioning of the side buttons forcing you to bend your thumb much farther back (closer to the palm) whereas the 3 shifted them right below the scroll wheel so it keeps the hand in a far more natural position. beyond that, they continue to have the same functions throughout.
mx master 3 is too heavy and not good, I throw away after 5 minutes, useless thing
Fun fact: that ridiculous place for a charging port on the Magic Mouse is intentional - Apple wanted their wireless products to be used wirelessly, to keep the clean Apple look, so they deliberately made it so that you can't leave it plugged in and use it at the same time.
Jordan big brain 🧠
I have had this mouse for longer than 3 years. It's a beast. PRO TIP: reprogram the thumb button to be Zoom. You can Zoom in/out by holding thumb button and moving mouse forward/back. In Adobe programs moving about is so fast.
Which one are you talking about?
@@maymiller3639 MX Master! Sorry I realize I didn't call it out
Logitec believes that all the humans are right handed...
Tried that mouse a lot of times, too big and heavy for tiny hand. But my husband is also in love with it
It would be neat if they made different sizes 🙀
You would like the mx anywhere 3 Its the same but the only thing missing is the horizontal scrolling, but its same materials, same metal magnetical vertical scrolling wheel same everything except its more portable and small, plus it comes in more cute colors!, same changing troughs 3 devices seamlessly n stuff
Logitech MX Master 3 is not a precision mouse. I've been using it for 2 years and I still find it frustrating as is not precise as a gaming mouse. 125hz and I find it very laggy, it makes me dizzy. The lens is a no no. Fair enough it works on any surface, but with low standard performance. And I don't want to talk about the many other flaws with the wheel.. Everything about this mouse just makes me dizzy. I do 3D design and is impossible to click accurately fast. I would say many other things about this mouse, some good as I find it comfortable .. but this mouse will own you, you will never own the mouse because the lens is of a very low standard. The other big flaw is in the thumb button which after a few weeks or months of usage I bet whatever you want that it will stop working reliably and you will need to dismantle it every now and then just to make it work decently again...
I am glad I had this mouse and used it for this very long time though. now I can clearly say this is the most overrated mouse in history. Any gaming mouse would perform better.
The big problem here is that all these flaws are nothing new. The MX Master is been having these issues since version 1. I use a SteelSeries mousepad with it because I found it would work best, but even with it, I find infuriating that sometimes I click the wrong menus in my software and it can affect my workflow and delete stuff I don't want which can drive me nuts ...
I would recommend RUclipsrs stop lying to people and be honest with their reviews, or at least use the gadgets for enough period until they are able to give a real experienced review. Is not normal that this mouse is advertised on every website as the top mouse for productivity when if you do your little research everyone is constantly complaining in the forums about its flaws.
I have nothing against Logitech, I love swiss brands as I believe they have the best customer service in the world, but I have to be honest and this mouse would need a better lense with a 1000hz polling rate plus an improved thumb button and a naturally smooth wheel in windows or inside software not only for the web (because it jumps in chunks even if you use it slowly (they should copy Microsoft Precision Mouse wheel, which is the perfect wheel for designers).. Basically, if they fix all of these they'd definitely have the best mouse out there. Meanwhile, I would suggest staying away from this because it will bring you headaches.
For 25 years in the world of 2D and 3D design and about a hundred mice that I have tested, my recommendation would be: Delux M910 (wired only) and White Shark MIYAMOTO. The buttons above and below the thumb proved to be the most practical feature (it would be perfect to have another button for the index finger, near the wheel). The ergonomics and functionality of these mice is what suits me.
The Magic Mouse hurts the top of my hand. Looking at it hurts.
Mine just arrived today after hearing good reviews. Seemed a lot of money to spend on a mouse. But after just 1 day using it I can agree with all the points you raised and can see this being one of the most valuable parts of my computer setup!
Just got the MX 3s a week ago and yes, it's really good and functional! Takes a little adjusting to especially if you are coming from a heavier/weighted mouse even like a Logitech m705 as it feels lighter. The button positions though make it really useful once you get used to it.
Fun fact about MX MASTER 3: You can copy something from one device and paste it on another
I went to the mx master 3 cause the magic mouse started getting glitchy on me.
Getting used to it but I also use the carpio wrist rest. Game changer! Especially with being a musician as well.
this is so handy (badum-ttsch... sorry... also not sorry) SO MANY of these reviews for mice are just for computer nerds and video people and not people who do the level of shit we do in design software with the dexterity and horizontal scrolling needs -I was getting increasingly fed up with people banging on about the horizontal scroll only in the context of video software cos there's me going ok but how easy is it to navigate illustrator and zoom in and out and do all that shit!! So glad i found your video covering exactly this!! I've also had several run-ins with RSI and it fucking cripples you - had to do 52 illustrations in 2 days once and couldn't even hold a cup for a week after. Graphics tablet REALLY helped me for that. My magic mouse died this morning and i've been debating getting a Magic mouse 2 and an MX-3 but wasn't sure about the zoom or if the thumb scrolly wheel would trigger my rsi again. I have a laptop propped up on a little stand thingy and my graphics tablet is... it's OK.. but zooming in and out all. the. time. is such a faff when using that thing even with hotkeys set up. Are you using it with the silicone chip? i've seen quite a few people griping about it being laggy and glitchy
it sucks that the mx 3 was too bit and heavy for me, therefore it felt unnatural and lags. i think gaming mice are the best for designers because it’s light and high in precision.
Another great video Will! What keyboard is that? It looks insanely thin.
The keyboard from the thumbnail is a Logitech MX Keys. This Keyboard has the same connectivity features as the mouse (connect 3 devices, 2x Bluetooth, 1x RF. You can switch device on the fly, and you can go cross monitor from one to the other. Also supports file sharing via copy & paste. If you copy on device 1, switch connection, you can paste on device 2 i.e.). The keyboard in the video (the white and silver one) is an Apple keyboard
@@Jannekevv87 thank you!
Not to digress, but I had the same issue with the Apple Magic Keyboard. Totally hurt my hands, there was shooting pain in my arm, hard to sleep, etc. Bought a mid-grade mechanical keyboard and over just a couple weeks, the pain went away and never came back. I think Apple needs to reconsider looks over function when it comes to I/O devices. I think the issue with the keyboard was the lack of key travel (shock absorption) which isn't good if you're typing on it like a normal keyboard. Plus no backlight, no TK-less, way overpriced versus even high-end mechanicals, etc. About the only good thing about it was it was Space Gray in color, I guess. Point is, I am not even going to consider the Apple mouse and I'm an Apple fanboy.
Will, you don't even need to use the button on the bottom to switch between devices - when you enable the flow functionality on both the devices in the logitech app you can just move the cursor over the edge of the screen (or crtl+move) to switch to the other device. When you use the mx keyboard it will also follow the focus of the mouse to the other device.
I've just bought the Logitech MX 3 based on your recommendation - can't wait to give it a try!
Exactly what I needed. Thanks Will.
Glad to hear it!
The Magic Mouse just didn’t have the middle mouse button I need for 3D. I know that would take away the aesthetics but maybe they could have hidden it in the side?
Wild i was just searching for a mouse last night on Amazon and thought what would be best for a designer. Algorithm or not its serendipitous
haha strange right? :)
:)
What about the scroll issues on the mx master 3. Is there any fix?
Very straightforward, Logitech MX 3 it is 👍 thank you for the awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the lovely comment! 💜
Glad you liked it!
Be aware that MX Master have only 125hz pooling rate (133 via Bluetooth) and it's so slow after 1000hz gaming mouse
I use the MS Master II Mouse. A couple of years in, I can’t go back, it’s awesome.
I am quite happy with Logitech M590. It has two customizable buttons AND IT’S SILENT.
i am so sold on that mouse......dont wanna pay 4x the price for MX Master
i can just press ALT+normal scroll on my timeline in davinci resolve, which is the only horizontal scroll function i need
i use paper to draw and i trace using a drawing tablet, i cant draw on drawing tablet properly
Ha, I was served this video by RUclips just after buying my MX3 - so glad you didn't point out a bunch of flaws!
Indeed, the MX Master 3 is the best mouse ever made.
The edits on this are 🔥
still using the Logitech MX Master 2 but it works really well so waiting to upgrade and get the USB type C
Do you have any scroll issues with the MX Master 3? I've read a lot of complaints on the internet about inaccurate scroll behaviours and it makes me hessitant getting this mouse...
When I bought my iMac in 2017, I took it out the box, booted up and the first thing I done when I felt the tiny, flat Magic Mouse was order a Blue Frost Steelseries Sensei on Amazon.
Dont know why, light weight and high precision are needed in graphic design(gaming mouse). Comfortable until now with the Razer Viper Mini + Tiger ICE Feet + Anti Slip Grip Tape 🙌 .. btw nice review 🙌
My work involves using Photoshop and Cinema 4D, and I also use the Razer Viper Mini. It performs exceptionally well in terms of precision and comfort. However, unfortunately, during long hours of work, my wrist starts to feel pain. I realized that it's because I use a gripping style when using the mouse, which makes me more prone to fatigue. Therefore, I want to try switching to a larger mouse to support my palm and alleviate wrist fatigue. In my search, I found this video.🙌
and that what's called ergonomic, I never once thought the magic mouse would be comfortable
Interesting! I have also abandoned the Magic Mouse for Logitech MX master. Do you do anything (training, stretchhing?) to stay from the pain? I also have/have had pain in hand, arm =/
Have you tried one of those squishy wrist supports?
I´ve tried a band on my underarm, close to the elbow. Do have a product to recommend?@@naomipaterson9300
Will, homie, i got a question for you! as a designer with access to a good desktop set up and adobe creative cloud for your work, how do you integrate the ipad into your workflow? ive been planning on getting one myself but i dont know exactly how it would help my workflow. maybe you could make a video on it?
You probably have an IPad already but I'd recommend a surface pro instead. Sticking to windows will just make everything easier. Plus, the pens are better in my opinion.
A wrists killer. I say this as pro designer/artist, and using one precisely right now, after around a year of use. It's precise, feels confy in your hand, it have a lot of extra useful buttons and the lateral extra weel it's a great addition... But if you use it, you gonna have a red swollen spot between the lower part of your palm and your wrist joint, soon. It's due to the too high size of the mouse. It forces the articulation to rest in a bad way over the table (or surface of use). And I say this even having huge hands, so I wan't to imagine what this could do with smaller hands and wrists...
I feel bad, because I love it for everything else, but I work lots and lots of hours and I must think about my health. I think I'll be back to a lower height mouse very soon.
Thanks for letting us know! I get wrist and hand pains when working with a mouse for too long, especially on big mice. I currently use a cheap little mouse and I prefer it over the nice gaming mouse of my bf because at least it doesn‘t kill my small hands as fast. A wacom tablet pencil is the only thing I can use for days without pain and for years and years I used it instead of a mouse but unfortunately it doesn‘t work as good anymore on firefox and win, some clicks just get lost. Anyways, I still get hyped on some nice designer mice but thank you for reminding me that my hand health is more important than some cool buttons on a mouse that‘s probably too big for me.
I use the Logitech M510, because here in Brazil the MX 3 is very expensive. More expensive than a mechanical keyboard. But one day i'll buy the MX 3.
Curious why you thought a track pad would be a good move and how it ended up in the review. I assume you tried a track ball and didn't like it enough to review it. I think more people would like track balls if they would try them.
So, what is the best mouse for designers? Did you have a favorite out of the list of mice you mentioned? What would you suggest? I currently have a Logitech 502. It's amazing.
Logitech M720 - cheap, functional, comfortable.
Try vertical Logitech mouse it helps a lot to prevent issues with arm health
I really can't believe that Apple has done the same mistake with that damned "Magic Mouse" It wasn't ergonomic, it hurts wrist. It's too small to handle. And the 2nd time it still is not ergonomic. What makes me surprise is it's the only choice to buy with your iMac. ( of course as a mouse, some people may prefer track pad, either ) I can begin to think that they've already produced milliards of them and that's why they make the end users buy it obligatory on purpose by default.
Hey, Will!
I found your video very useful and a very good approach to present all the three main types of mice for a macOS user.
I have a question regarding the Logitech mouse: do you have any idea how to set next/previous artboard for Illustrator on the side buttons?
I searched a bit and didn’t find a solution yet.
Thanks!
Am I the only one who doesn't even care and is happy with just "a mouse" that I bought 10 years ago for 7 bucks?
MX master - hands down. had one for 7 years that was stolen, replaced with the 3, complete bliss.
I’m not a designer but I’m getting what you’re saying. 👍
I have a corded gateway mouse, the ones with the lil gray rubber ball.
logitech craft + logitech g900 - and you are covered like a graphic designer and a gamer. thank you, good bye :)
So I ask I use 2020 kitchen program an drag an drop alot what would be a good mouse to use I need to make small moves very precise
I use a vertical mouse... its like holding a pencil and helps combat rsi
Logitech G903 has my vote.
Using the olg g602 with macro for all cc and still loving it!
Hi Will
I love apple products, because now m habitual to it so switching to other feels different. 😊 anyway love your videos💛
Where you about to say "this Apple trash" for the magic mouse 2? :D
I usually like gaming mice as they are very comfortable. Cant stand the Magic Mouse.
I’m quite happy with my track pad 🙊
@@naomipaterson9300 Whatever works for you really.
MX 3 is unmatched, nothing else to say
i don’t think I’m in the right place
watch the video first!
Im can make logos in android can i work wait it??
I'm left-handed tho...
The top scroll on the MX3 is horrible. I don't understand how no one here is overlooking this.
MX Anywhere 2s is 👌🏻
Nice
Thanks
ergonomia ta aí né
It's a mouse ffs, get the Logitech G102 Prodigy, adjust the DPI to your liking, best sensor most precise it's light and cheap. Or look for other gaming Mice lots of options that are ergonomic have the best sensors on the market, feels great last long :/
What about a gaming mouse (should be faster) like the Razer Basilisk Ultimate?
Only 90% of the time? You are not a true designer 🤣
Logitech wins.
hi will send you fb link please
