Nice no frills video but IMHO you were working with those loose wires from the old breaker were a little too close to the live breakers directly above so I would shut those off too in an abundance of caution especially if you are new to this.

Can you change a 15 amp breaker to a 30 amp breaker for a 3000 watt load.
Not unless that 15 amp breaker has 10 gauge wire going to it. 15 amp breaker has 14 gauge wire 20 amp breaker 12 gauge wire 30 amp breaker 10 gauge wire. You cannot increase the amperage above what the wire is designed to handle.
Hey, I replaced my 15 amp breaker in my trailer but it still isn't working everytime I turn the power back on it trips again and no matter what I do it doesn't stay on do you have any idea why?
Need to change a breaker from the pool panel. My ? Is do we turn off the house breakers off as well before replacing the pool breakers.😍
You should only have to turn off the breaker at the main house panel that supplies the panel at your pool. And then change the breaker at the pool panel.
Why not just kill the power to the whole thing? That way you can't possibly get popped

I insulated the screwdriver shanks with rubber tubing from Automotive store- one more factor of safety. Also, if leaving the main breaker on , I suggest turning off the two breakers adjacent to the one you are replacing., That way if a loose wire strays a little you won't cause a short circuit.Also, best to stand on a piece of wood to keep yourself from being grounded.

You must turn off the main power to be safe.
@Crack Shot As far as I know, there’s always a main breaker/disconnect (unless illegally installed). It will either be in the panel like this one or a main disconnect between the panel and the meter. Newer code requires a main disconnect to be accessible to emergency services and so it could be outside by the meter if your main panel is inside.

Such a solid point. If the box has no main disconnect it has to be being fed from another location that has a main shut off. I know lots of contractors that work on live boxes like this. It is dangerous even though they are experienced. However, none of these folks handing out advice on RUclips should be doing so if they don't discuss the fact that the circuit bar is still hot and can potentially kill you if the main is not shut off to the bar. Even with the main off in most panels, the main service feeder is often still hot at the top, and is also deadly. Point is, it's any easy job, but just a few seconds of safety advice is needed in most of the DIY videos I've seen on breaker replacement.

That's not correct actually. This is a GE box. The service disconnect is above the power peter.

COuld a breaker be only partly broken? I have baseboard heater that suddenly heats only half as much as before with the electric wall thermostat showing heating at full power.
Great video. For the layman or nonpro, will it be safer or necessary to shut off main to do replacement? Also, I noticed that the video tech Brian never ever touched anything in the panel with his bared hands; was that because even though the circuit being replaced had been turned off, there still was residual load left in the breaker poles and related structures? Please reply. Thank you.
+Montery12 Yes, shut off main breaker if your panel has one (this panel did not). Because there was load on the other breakers we try to do everything with insulated handle tools to prevent shock.

Can I change 50 amp circuit breaker to 30 amp circuit breaker? My current microwave/wall oven combo should have 30 amp breaker according to GE tech support but the circuit breaker had 50 amp for it. My house was built 25 years ago and I think the previous owner installed the microwave/oven combo without switching the circuit breaker amp.
+refresh77 Typically you can go down in breaker size but not up with the wire that's installed 10 gauge is usually for 30 amps 6 gauge for 50 amp so if you have 6 gauge it will work for 30 amp too. You just might have a hard time getting larger wire into smaller amp breaker

Sounds fair, I ended up getting myself a Factory Unit lease, as the electricians in Australia seemed to be very worried about fitting a 50amp breaker to my home metre box and running a power cable to my garage. But in other news, I am wondering what thickness cable I should get to run a 3 phase power lead for my new machinery to run in my workshop. If you think 6mm twin and earth is ok, I'll use what I have, but I think I might need bigger, not 100%. The Air compressor is about 3800watts, that would be my biggest power draw

can I change a 20 to a 40 ? or is there other changes I need to make first ?
87turbo......No you can NOT just change from a 20 amp to a 40 amp, the reason being: The breakers and wires going to the outlet or appliance work in unison. In other words a 20 amp circuit will use 12 gauge wire while a 40 amp circuit needs to have 8 gauge wire. If you increase the amps without changing the wire you risk an electrical fire from overloading the wire.
what if the circuit breaker that is not working that u need to replace has no markings on it so you do not know what to buy to replace it?

tnx, but you might have mentioned (ESPECIALLY with your panel that has NO 'Main Power Off' switch) that the new/replacement breakers should have their 'levers' in the 'OFF' position .. otherwise, SPARKS would be showering as soon as your needle-nose pliers pushed the wires into the screw-tiedowns !
Also, if the panel has labels identifying which breaker goes to which house appliance or circuit, just stick a tiny piece of electrical tape on ONE of the wires , remembering to which of the two breakers that wire goes to .. so that the panel 'Labels' will still be correct ..
I'd also not trust my life on the functioning of any 'non-contact voltage detector which has its light OFF to confirm the safe condition! What if there's a flaw in the unit??? It'd tell you there's NO voltage when one might be present! Those devices do have lil batteries in them, no? which could fail at any time..
Far safer to use a Digital Voltmeter which, if IT fails, the screen is FAR more likely to be blank ...! but that's just my own humble opinion ;)
Actually we do address that through annotations inserted in the video. They seem to be showing up when played through a desktop but are not showing up when played through the mobile app. It's an issue we'll forward to RUclips/Google.......

You did not shut off the main power coming into the house. For a non-professional, this is essential. In this sense, your video has a major flaw. Note: Most homeowners do not know where the main switch is, or how to shut it off.
Prof. Flanagan you didn't read the video description before you watched the video. Your concerns are addressed there.
Technically a non professional shouldn't be in a panel with the cover off anyway but changing a breaker in particular is no big deal so long as you're not Clumsy McDoofus. Even if you manage to accidentally touch a hot pole with a slight finger slip or something you'd have to be foolish enough to be contacting a path to ground or neutral or the other pole to get a dangerous shock. It's the pole to pole grazing I'd really be worried about, not to say 120V is a joke or anything.
But Isn’t the wire that you are messing with still hot ?
I still paid $80 to a handymen, as my wife won't let me do it myself. Well It was my mistake to listen to her. He took 15 minutes to replace it at $45 and hour rate, he went to Home Depot they did not have the right size, then he went to Lowe's and charged 1 hour of labor to go to Home depot. Sad decision by me, I thought he will charge for 1/2 hour labor plus $12 for breaker, but he charged 1-1/2 hour
