I have just plucked up the courage to try my first FSL. I am so so pleased with the results of my first project. I am absolutely delighted with the outcome. Thank you so much.
This is a wealth of information. I have had so much trouble with slippage and never realized there was something I could do to prevent it. I have especially had slippage problems using an "endless" hoop. Thank you. Thank you. Love your designs and have made the fairy sandal several times.
Thank you Sonia, just purchased your designs for the first time and try free standing lace for the first time. I feel better after watching your video.
Love your videos....I learn so much and you don’t rush thru your presentations...very classy lady and so are your designs.....I’m goin to try the FSL angels to send to my sisters for Christmas.....
Oh Sonia, I have been embroidering for years and have been following you for a very long time. It is so nice to finally see you! When we communicate with people online, and have never seen what they look like, we make up an image in our minds. And so, I had my own vision of what you looked like. I am ALWAYS wrong when I do that. :-) I did recognize your hands though! Thanks so much for the informative video. Your work is so top-notch.
I wish this video was out there when I started embroidery a few years ago. I have learned the try and see what happens way. However, I have been doing FSL this way for over 2 years now as I had a good friend to give me hints. Thank you for your lovely designs.
Thank you so much. I have invested time after time over the last few years to make freestanding lace. Not a lot, but enough to feel bad that I keep chickening out. I feel more confident to try this time. You would think the stuff was fatal the way I avoid it. I love your designs. They are elegant, delicate, beautiful and just amazing. Thank you for being so generous with your time and efforts.
I watched this yesterday. You did a great job. I have been using Vilene for over 15 years. I use it every day. Thank you for doing the free standing lace video. I have sent it to others so that they may view it also. BarbaraAnn
+Barbara Page-Stocks Hi Barbara, I hope you see this. Where do you purchase Vilene, please? My Australian friends seem to have it, but I haven't found it in the states. Thank you.
I am so glad I watched this video, I had problems with the circles on my bodice, they were NOT attached correctly, nor was the satin stitches around the fabric (shifting is my guess, now). I must go back to the instructions, as I do not recall that I was to use a sticky stabilizer for that design. I have the sticky type for my hoop it all, so that is not an issue. I have enjoyed your designs for several years, TY to Gary & you Sonia for taking the time to show the proper stabilizer for FSL.
I love your designs. Especially the Chili Rista and of course, the angels. They come out so beautifully. I am so glad you made this tutorial. I was not aware about the wool felt and ironing. Thanks.
Please change the name of the video to ONE STOP: Explanation of Stabilizers, lol!! I have never been so informed as of now. Most just say stabilizer and find what works best, but being new and not too rich...I use a very cheaply made finger paint paper from dollar store! But I never did lace. WOW you are SO great at explaining the different ways to just get prepared for that project and fixing your stuff. THANK YOU you not only got me confident to try lace, but to do normal embroidery with more knowledge.
Love your videos.Thank you both for all the time and work you put into your videos and designs. They are impeccable. You have taught me and so many others with love and caring. Thank you so very much. God Bless you all.
I just tried out your free angel for sending to your Pastor. It is awesome, thank you. Love your tips. Especially the one for pulling taut on the back of the hoop. :)
What a great lesson you are giving, thank you so much. I am going to try my first FSL as soon as my machine comes back from having it's annual service. I will be using water soluble Avalon Plus (Firm) which is a kind of meshy fabric. Do you think starching the lace would be worth doing to protect it's shape?
I really enjoyed your video. Even though I have been doing FSL for quite a while, I still learned a lot of great ideas. Keeping the hoop tight has always been my problem and the turning over to tighten idea is wonderful. And I really love your designs!
I found your video looking for free motion lace (using a regular sewing machine) I have no idea what search term to use, but i've found videos in Russian I can't understand lol. I just ordered some of the stabilizer you recommend in the video! Thank you for the great tips! I might actually have some success with my embroidery now. God bless!
Wow, that's fantastic! I'm happy the video helped you even though you're working with a different method! You might want to search for "free motion embroidery". That is the usual term for what you're doing. Thank you for writing and I wish you great success in your hobby!
What a wealth of information you are! Thank you for sharing. I do have a question. I live in a very humid climate and would like to make some lace Christmas ornaments. Will the fiber stabilizer hold up in a humid climate? They would be for an inside tree.
Beautiful! Thank you for the free heart and the wonderful videos. How were you able to get all the wss out of the heart? It seems to get lodged between the threads and it shows no matter how long I soak it or run it under water. I'm using the same mesh wss you recommend. It seems to remain lodged between the tiny cross stitches.
HI Sonia! Great tutorial. What embroidery machine are you using? Is there a software you can purchase to design your own designs? Thank you for your help!
I use Babylock multineedle machines. So sorry for such a delayed response! I use the Bernina Designer software to create designs, but I would recommend Hatch, by Wilcom.com
If I was to put this (the tacky stabilizer) around my hoops and leave it, can I piece it around the hoop or is it better to use a whole piece, not broken?
I happen to have done just that this past week. I wanted to take off the old stuff and replace it without using a full square. I pieced it together and it's working well. Just be careful to not overlap in the same spot every time. In my mind, I think it's important to keep it from building up in any one spot. I cut strips and stretched each one a bit as I applied it so that it sort of wrapped around the edges. Hope that helps! :)
When these are dry are they quite hard? I made a pair of baby shoes. They're cute but too hard for a baby's foot. Any suggestions? Maybe a different thread?
Hi Kimberly. They can be hard or soft depending on how long you soak them. If you allow them to soak in soapy water and then rinse, they will be quite soft. However, you will want some of these to be nice and stiff, such as the earrings and ornaments. I hope that helps.
Hi Gina, this size works well for ladies as well as girls. However, they are too big for babies. Here is the link with photos so you can take a look at how they look on a woman and a girl. www.soniashowalterdesigns.com/free-standing-lace/barefoot-sandals-more/

Thank you for all the information. I love to do FSL, but now I have a better understanding. Thanks again.

Excellent video. Very informative. Love your designs. Thank you.
Thank you for all the great comments! Gary and I want to say, you are most welcome!
Thank you! I've downloaded the free Angel of Light designs, but I'm positive I'll be back for more soon.
Brilliant video. Thanks so much. More, more, more please!
Your work is beyond beautiful
Hey! I just bought FSL earrings designs from you! You have some amazing designs. It took me a while to find your items, but I'm glad I kept looking.
Loved the video I do a lot of FSL your designs always turn out so nice. Thanks Sandra

I live in a very humid climate and the stabilizer holds up beautifully! :)
Ok embroidery therapist!! LMAO as soon as I heard that I was like...I like her!😄😄😄😄😄😄

You’re right. I’m so sorry. I use a 75/11. :)
Very informational.
Thank you for the great tips. But its a little confussing cause you conterdict yourself
Can you be specific as to what you are referring to?
Can you also use a highlite of metallic lace?
Thank you for your wonderful instructions! I'm going to give it a try :)
I am very new to machine embroidery and I would like to make faith-based bookmarks to give to others to encourage them
Very nice,
Thank You for the Video. It was very helpful and I learned some tips that I was not aware of. Good presentation. Looking forward to more videos.

Where can I find your tutorial on barefoot sandals?
You can use solvy for making lace but you have overlap the stitches.
Solvy is not for lace. It is meant to be used as a topper. Lace is digitized with overlapping stitches as a rule. I hope that helps. :)
What home machine would be best for the freestanding lace?
I have a Brother PE770. I'm sure any embroidery machine will be fine.
Sonia, did you ever make the turtorial for the barefoot sandals?
Linda, we have not gotten to that yet! We hope to! :)
Sonia, do you do any videos on how to digitize designs in FSL?
I am gathering knowledge to be able to do that in the near future! :)
Please tell me what is the name of the 2 layer you use when You iron?? thank You

Great!! Thank you!
Do you use a steam iron or dry iron?
What size hoop is required for the Wedding Angel?
It fits in the 4 x 4 hoop.

Can someone tell me please the name of the interlining? (English is not my native language so I can't catch the name) please help
It's called Vilene. It dissolves in water.
Masive Thanks
Do these only come in sizes for Ladies? Or can they be resized for girls and babies?
Hi Gina, this size works well for ladies as well as girls. However, they are too big for babies. Here is the link with photos so you can take a look at how they look on a woman and a girl.

Thx. I'd love to have some in baby sizes if you ever think about making them.!
