Coin Roll Hunting Pennies - Major Mint Error Found?

  • Опубликовано: 21 авг 2018
  • Picked up a Penny Box and went on the lookout for some Wheat Pennies, errors and varieties and found an interesting Penny that I think is a... well, I'll let you tell me your thoughts after you see it! I'm hoping it is the real deal because if so it is definitely a major mint error and I'll likely be sending it off to PCGS for verification and grading!
    Do you check your pennies thoroughly or just pull out the oldies and/or the AU+ coins? Do you keep the coppers?
    Keep hunting and good luck!
    They're still out there for us to find!
    By the way - I am still selling my custom Coin Roll Hunting Mats on eBay (see below) and will have a Silver Stacker Mat (Half Dollars, Quarters and Dimes) within the next few weeks - it's in production!

    It cracks me up that when a new coin collector finds a coin everybody is quick to poo poo on it as a homemade vise job but when someone "in the know" finds something similar, everybody goes crazy that its a major league error. SMH.

    • @RobFindsTreasure
      @RobFindsTreasure  6 лет назад

      Die Clashed and Brockage Errors are similar but this one exhibits the characteristics of a brockage error more so. Mainly because neither strike is clean and typically in a die clash, the bottom image is more detailed.

    • @cleverusernamenexttime2779
      @cleverusernamenexttime2779 6 лет назад

      Also a die clash would show details of both sides on either side of the coin. I find lots of clashed nickles

      Mikee Vee in 1986, as a kid my parents too me to the mint in Philadelphia. While there, I bought a small 7-coin set called 1982 variety Lincoln pennies, uncirculated. It contains the following: 1982-P large date copper, 1982-P small date copper, 1982-D large date copper, 1982-P Small date zinc, 1982-P large date zinc, 1982-D Small date zinc, 1982-D Large date zinc. I lost in 1990, yesterday I found it in my parent’s basement. I couldn’t believe it. I just got back into coin collecting recently after doing it off and on for years. I’m loving the hunting. As a scientist, I have some nice microscopes I use at home, now I converted into a search desk and as much as I love metal detecting, honestly, this coin roll hunting stuff is really addicting and fun! Sorry for the long ramble, but after seeing your reminder for the 1982 small date copper it reminds me of my find after 27 years lost!

    Would have been nice to see error under your microscope.
    I think Lincoln is faint and sharper memorial is mirrored. So you are saying a penny with memorial exposed stuck to die that was pressing Lincoln onto blank planchette. Memorial is mirror imprinted onto blank and Lincoln is also pressed but with a penny barrier and is faint.
    Still cannot tell how it could not be done after mint with a penny and a press, except Lincoln faint.

    • @RobFindsTreasure
      @RobFindsTreasure  6 лет назад

      Yes - a die was capped with the reverse side showing - as it struck, the memorial end struck harder than the Obverse side behind it leaving what you see in the penny I found. Had it been one of the first strikes before the cap fell off, it would be more mirrored and you may not have even seen Lincoln at all. BUT - over time the die capped coin thins and allows for some distortion which gets worse over time. That's why they refer to them in three stages - Early, Mid and Late. I think this one is an early stage. Got to get it verified though!

    Rob, do you have Allen Herberts book "A Price Guide to Mint Errors"? The title is misleading it's not really a price guide, but it does have more knowledge about varieties and errors than any other resourse I have ever found. I strongly suggest it and a copy of the red book for everyone that is interested in coins.

  • @nspigler7387
    @nspigler7387 3 года назад

    I’m a bit confused, if a coin that would be normal, sticks to one of the die hubs, and goes to press another coin, wouldn’t the blank planchet be the one trying to be pressed? And therefore just flattening the one stuck as a cap and leaving the planchet with a light imprint? I’m not sure how you can get a normal coin and a planchet to produce a mirrored error. Unless coins are pressed multiple times and further along, maybe on press 2, one got stuck and another already pressed coin stamped the stuck one

    How much is a full brockage penny worth

      @RobFindsTreasure  6 лет назад

      If graded in the MS range, should fetch $500-ish (maybe more), IMHO.

    I don't understand how an error like that is possible without post mint tampering. Because how would it be possible for the memorial to be so distinct, because the second coin that hit it wouldn't be able to get the memorial on it because the coin is in the way. I think that a person just sanded down the head of a penny then hammered the tail into it. That's why it looks off center

      A penny gets stuck to the die (called a die cap) and it's reverse then stamps the next coin causing the brockage. Most of them are off center or way off center and if it is encapsulated it is called a full brockage. This one is pretty close to being a full mirrored brockage but not quite. Of course, that is why grading is key... for validation.

      If what you describe had happened the reverse would be damaged. This is most likely a legit error.

    What do you do with the coppers because i have a bunch and want to know what to do

      Adrian Alligator I just hoard them, people keep them and sell/buy them. If the us abolishes the penny then it would be legal to melt copper and silver. I am a copper hoarder myself. Subbed to you!

    What is it called when there is lines on the obverse? I got a Lincoln where his right shoulder has been "ironed", like he has lines on him. Not the trail lines type either
