I could reread The Song of Achilles forever, mostly because I really like the writing. I do understand why you didn't vibe with it. I think it's a marmite read even though the entirety off TikTok has decided they like it... I think a lot of people don't dare to disagree but reading tastes are a personal thing :) so no worries, I still really like you and your reading tastes and your videos. I did like The Starless Sea but I remember being so confused so in the end I didn't really know what to think of it. Maybe I should give it a reread :)

Firstly, I have been desperately searching for something that would recapture the whimsy, mystery and vibes of Piranesi so I have added The Starless Sea to the top of my TBR, and secondly, I have so much respect for you sharing your honest opinions about books with cult followings like The Song of Achilles, because it can be really hard to figure out whether you want to read a book when people generally rave about it, and I feel like I come away from your videos with a good understanding of the books you read and whether or not they might be for me!

Starless sea flew right to the top of my TBR as soon as you compared it to The Ocean at the End of the Lane! I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane when I was in hospital having inpatient chemo and my overwhelming desire at that point in time was to find something powerful enough to distract me from Being A Person In A Sick Body and that book did that! I read it in one afternoon and for that whole time I was so mentally in it, just the most exquisite escapism. I've heard very mixed reviews of it (a colleague whose opinions I really respect hated it) and I find it really hard to defend because the thing it did for me is so personal and vulnerable but I'm always looking for books that are able to give you that sense of absorption where even your pain disappears for a while.

the fact that I hate-read the last half of the song of achilles because of the toxic masculinity, everyone blaming each other and everything just going to shit. I was so angry at this book when I put it down, I literally have no clue where I put it and I hope I never find it again 😂 my two stars for this book went to Chiron and Briseis, the two mvp's.
We can't like every book we read, imagine if everyone liked the exact same things, how boring it would be!
i'm in the beginning of the starless sea, I didn't have the brain power to read it so it's on hold for know, but will for sure pick it up again, I liked what I did read, I just need to be in the right headspace!
Haven't read summer sons but, sigh *opens amazon*

yay ! Finally finding someone that has the same feeling as me about The Song of Achilles. The problem I had with this book was that it was too much based on what's happening (all the war mechanic etc) and not enough on the characters and their relation. It felt like I didn't know them. Also, I studied Greek Mythology at school, so I was very familiar with the basic story, and got bored quickly due to the lack of personalization (what I'm trying to say is that Madeleine Miller could have used less pages to describe what was going on to focalize on the characters and it still would be historically accurate) (sorry if this is wonky, English is not my native language)
We'll go in jail together friend 🤝 I could use this face to face appointment to tell you how much I love your videos and your personality ❤

My DUDE I went to a local bookstore about a month ago and bought Summer Sons and The Starless Sea (completely on a whim), and I am deeply shook that they’re both making an appearance in this video. ‘Twas fate. I read them both recently, and had the same reactions as you.
I loved Mandelo’s writing style, but I almost felt like the beauty of their writing made the story feel a lot longer than it was. I would’ve loved to have replaced some of the racing and partying scenes with some more backstory. But over all, I did still like the book just fine.
I absolutely ADORED The Starless Sea! The writing is so beautiful and the story is so strong that I think I could read it twice per year and always find something new to enjoy. I think the bees were my favorite characters haha
Love knowing that we were probably reading these same books at the same time. The high this video brought me was immense. 5 out of 5 stars from me.

I'm a big fan of Summer Sons, but I get your point. I think the book is more an exploration of grief and of how much the protagonist is discovering that the relationship he had with Eddie wasn't what he think it was. The confusion of realizing that he had a very much homo romantic relationship with his dead best friend but not having that person there to explore it, having to proces his sexuality at the same time that Eddie's death is a lot. Not really knowing who Eddie was is kind off part of the charm, because when someone dies what remains is the idea of the person everybody has (I get how is anoying, I also want to know, but I get the author choise to let it vage). I think is a very nische book for fans of The foxhole cour and The raven circle, if you like those you are going to like Summer Sons.
Edit: Also, very chaotic gay energy.
As always love your videos, the make my day :)

This was the video I needed this week. I didn't much like The Song of Achilles either, Chiron was my favourite, I always like myths he is in, but once they moved on I was less invested. I'd suggest Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe as a good way to get to know at least the ancient Greek pantheon if not the heros, and the art is beautiful.
I was worried you wouldn't like The Starless Sea because lots of internet people seem to hate it. Most of my real life people love it though, it's one I will always revisit.

I know you said you're not super big into re-tellings, but you may like Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker! It is also a retelling of the legend of Achilles, but from the perspective of the women he, and other Greek men, enslaved and took as prisoners of war during their battles. The content can be triggering, but you can tell Barker put a lot of care into crafting this story and how she explored the lives of these women living under such circumstances. I'm not a fan of the Greek myth retelling trend, but I loved that book.

I've only read Circe and I do think Madeline Miller is a fantastic writer who does a lot of incredible research in her books. The problem? I just don't like Greek Mythology that much. One of those, not for me but happy you all love it sorta deal.
