- I talk about everything you need to know about the new dorms (yakʔitʸutʸu) at Cal Poly SLO, and about what I consider are the must-haves of dorm life. The building I am touring is called tšɨłkukunɨtš, building 172D, which the first building you see approaching campus on Grand Avenue.

Thanks for the tour! Loved it!! And from the looks of it your dorm is near the grand entrance so how could it be far from campus? I know this was years ago! Hopefully you have graduated or about to!

just got accepted and im heavily considering going here. i was wondering: what learning community were you in that got you into yakitutu? and i’m aware that many of them rotate and all, but is there any community that had been consistently in yakitutu?
Yes! The Honors living community and Mindful Living have consistently been in yakityutyu. However, like you said that could change next year so no guarantee

Is there like a storage room anywhere for large items like surfboards or amps for musicians? (I have a massive 60lbs bass amp)
Griffin Spaulding there’s no storage room, but you can probably find space under the beds since they are super tall. a few friends of mine brought surfboards as well and they either put it on top of the wardrobe or along the wall against the beds.
can u do a video about the graphic communications major? i really want to apply for that major when i apply next year but i would love to hear more about it than the website gives

for the community kitchen, do they come with pots and pans and other stuff, or should you bring your own?
Residents can borrow pots and pans from the Community Center which is by the central lawn of yakityutyu. A lot of people bring their own kitchen supplies as well
i was wondering if you would recommend a double triple or quad (for best chance of getting the new dorms)
josie barry for the best chance of getting a room, definitely doubles/triples. there are only 2 quads per floor vs 20ish double/triple rooms. the building you pick depends on your learning community, though.

How easy is it to switch your major? I got accepted but I’m having doubts on what I chose 🥲
I've read in some majors not so easy. I would google it, and ask some students in your major.
Do learning communities actually switch every year?? And what dorm is the college of business in this year?
Jaden Hansen Some do, but not all. Depends on the number of people who sign up for a community. The business dorms were in the Yosemite Towers this year and they’ve been there consistently.
I got waitlisted and I really really want to attend. Do you have any tips on how to get off the waitlist?
Y-Thien Lam Cal Poly admissions is tough. One thing you could do is write a Letter of Continued Interest, which isn’t a formal process that they promote, but something that definitely won’t hurt your application. It might set you apart from the rest of the applicants. Other than that, unfortunately there’s not much to do other than wait.

Yeah there are bike racks outside for them
They allow bikes. Electric scooters are not allowed, so go at your own risk! (I have one, oops!)

Hi CJ! I just committed for the Fall and although I am super excited to be attending my dream arch school, some things have been on my mind and so far I haven't been able to find many answers. I'm an Asian-American from the Bay Area and time and time again I've been told by my peers that SLO is super "white". This has never bothered me as I'm personally not opposed to exploring new environments but after visiting earlier this year I realized that this will definitely be quite the culture shock. Some notable aspects I've read about SLO is that it has a very homogeneous population, it is not as developed as the Northern and Southern regions of California, it is very nature centric, the average person is nicer than in other places, and oddly I've also heard life can be "boring" or like a "simulation". With all this in mind I wanted to ask a few questions.
1. What is the general atmosphere or vibe you get when you walk down the street or go to a local restaurant as a minority, and more specifically as an Asian?
2. How are the interactions you have with the locals? Is it worth getting to know people outside of Cal Poly students or is it wiser just to stay in our bubble?
3. Do you go out often? If you do how is social life off campus, and do you ever venture out alone?
4. In the not so distant past there have been cases of Cal Poly (Caucasian) students participating in racist acts such as blackface and imitating immigrants. Have you personally witnessed racism and how tolerant is the school towards this kind of behavior?

Hey! First of all congrats, and I'm super glad you reached out. You have very valid points about SLO and I think you have successfully gathered (like I have being there for a year) that everyone has different opinions about SLO and what it has to offer, especially considering its white-majority demographic. I want to preface that my answers do not reflect the experiences of other minorities, and that a lot of my experience has to do with my privilege, my own personal decisions about my college experience, and the people I choose to surround myself with. With that, here's my take on your questions:
1. I feel that when I walk down the street or enter establishments in SLO, I see myself more as a college student than an Asian college student. Sure, I do notice at times that there are not a lot of people around that look like me and that I feel I may be perceived as an outsider, but I have rarely felt out of place. The general vibe I get is that I am walking around a college town with a lot of other college students, and I like to think I am treated as such.
2. My interactions with locals have been overall positive. I volunteered at the food bank for a class a few times and interacted with people in public transit, the food bank itself, and many downtown establishments, and all have been generally pleasant and respectful. I have also made connections with people from Cuesta College which has been great. I'd say its always good to know people outside of the Cal Poly bubble because it will make you realize that there is more to SLO than just Cal Poly and appreciate what it has to offer. But I will say that you will (and it's wise to) meet people at Cal Poly that you wouldn't normally gravitate towards and that will have many interesting things to offer. Explore explore explore.
3. Hahaha I'd say I went out often. Whether it involved substances, boba runs, biking downtown to study, driving to the beach in a Zipcar, getting groceries... I'd say I went off campus pretty frequently. Social life off campus is great, there's many places to get food, many natural places to explore (God so many) and generally a decent amount of activities to do depending on what you're into: line dancing, latin dancing, farmer's market, greek life, concerts, etc. I have ventured out alone to get groceries (I went out like 5 miles off campus to go to Target my first week) and go to some coffee shops to study. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery.
4. I have not experienced overt racism but I have friends that have. Generally they are reported and addressed, but administration has a big issue with handling racist behavior. Many incidents are addressed with no plans to take action, so many times it seems like Cal Poly is mainly concerned with upholding their reputation to maintain prestige rather than taking effective action to correct a situation. However, student organizations at Cal Poly including cultural organizations (can't hype them up enough) and Mustang News are very vocal and transparent about addressing these incidents and generating a discussion to denounce inaction. Being on this campus, I have the privilege to say that I generally feel safe and that there are way more spaces that are welcoming and inclusive than those that are not. And it has been evident in Cal Poly's diversity initiatives that our campus is getting more and more diverse. So I have hope that by this increasing change in demographic paired with today's racial tensions that this will be a more prominent discussion about racism on campus.
I hope that gave you some new perspective on life at SLO. Congrats again for getting in! (for Arch nonetheless, they're doing amazing stuff!!)

I definitely feel better about this future experience now that I've gotten direct answers and a perspective from someone of the same cultural background.
I absolutely love nature, so you best believe I'll be taking full advantage of the locations! Can't say I'm as stoked for boba though we're practically drowning in it here in the Bay haha (who am I kidding count me in)
I also wanted to ask, how useful is having your own car with you at SLO? I'm a very independent person and I've never been fond of relying on public transportation, even if that would save more money. That being said, in your opinion would it be worth it to bring a car and paying for annual parking?
I should also say that I'm transferring into Cal Poly as a junior with about 4 years of college experience so I'm quite comfortable with college life. I'll also be staying at "The SLO" apartment complexes. At this point I'm evidently more concerned with day to day life outside of the comfort of my own home.

I'd say it is pretty useful to have a car. My experience has mainly been with Zipcar (super cheap, $5/hour with a bunch of cars to choose from on campus) but I am planning to bring my car down next year. I'd say for you it would be worth it just so that getting groceries, going to and from campus, and exploring the area outside of SLO will be less of a hassle. If you are traveling back to the Bay for breaks, you can always recoup the cost of annual parking by offering rideshares from Facebook (very popular, $20 per person, you can give rideshares to and from the Bay Area). Public transportation is great but definitely is not the main method of transportation around SLO.
That's really awesome! I have no doubts that you will adjust well at SLO. I always tell people it's the best place to be for 4 years (2 or 3 for you) and it's best to just treat it as a place to explore rather than a place you're stuck in. Being in the Central Coast is such a unique experience being a Bay Area local myself.

okay this might seem like a stupid question, but how exactly do you travel off campus? to my understanding the landscape is really too hilly (as in not flat) to bike everywhere, and freshman aren't allowed to have cars, so is the public transportation sufficient? is there a bus or something that can take you from campus into town?
Not a stupid question at all! The most popular option to travel off campus is by bus. SLO Transit has about 4 routes that goes through the campus to Downtown. It's super convenient and free for students using their Polycard.
What I did most of the time though (and highly highly suggest) is rent a Zipcar. It's $5 an hour (splitting with friends can make it $1/hour essentially) and you can pick from about 10 cars all parked on campus. Not a lot of people utilize this so there's always a car to rent if you book early enough. It is perfect for going off campus especially to the beach towns.
As for biking, I have done it multiple times getting from campus to downtown, but it is a slight uphill battle going back to campus. If you have an electric scooter or electric bike it will make it much easier.
Uber is also an option but it is pretty expensive in SLO.

Currently a high school junior and I was wondering if you can dorm with the opposite gender at SLO?
JandreTV Yes you can. On the housing application you can select a gender inclusive preference for your room so that you can room with someone of another gender. By default it would be a same sex room.

Ellie Walsh hey fellow GrCer! the major has been super super awesome. ive done so many cool projects in just the first couple quarters, like designing a 10 page portfolio booklet, a website, and a full deck of cards! the professors are super approachable and the material is super relevant to the industry. since only a few colleges offer GrC, so many employers from the print, packaging, and tech industry come to us to hire. we even have our own career fair every quarter and GrC week every winter quarter (where we don’t go to classes and instead attend presentations from people in the industry!). super dope, i can go on about it all day. if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask on Instagram @cjtio.

grace huang cal poly is definitely a majority caucasian school, but the cultural community is large and very supportive. the cultural clubs, especially the asian ones, are very active and have a lot of members! i can tell you more about it through PMs, feel free to message me on instagram @cjtio.
