    Hello Potters. In this episode we will be testing and comparing Potters choice (PC-54)
    glaze Ancient copper from the Amaco company for cone 6 oxidation. If you are not in the know, Amaco discontinued this glaze a little over a year ago and has since reformulated it. This of course requires testing to see if the new recipe is just as good as the old recipe. If was a classic, let's see if this one stands the test.
    Note: all tests were in the same kiln, we do both brushed and poured glazing for these tests.
    Enjoy the review of Amaco's reissued Pc-54 ancient copper glaze.

    Mayco Light Flux + Old Ancient Copper is one of my favorite combos. The flux really adds so much to this glaze.

    They should call it New Ancient Copper. They are both pretty, but I prefer the original. The new one seems to have a lot more brown in it, or looks a lot more brown, and it just doesn't have the depth of the original. Really love the piece that stuck to the kiln. Thanks for the video; you are so close to 100k! Hope you get it soon.

      I totally agree. The new AC is nice, but it doesn't have that golden glittery effect of the original.

    I can definitely see the difference in shading and I prefer the old recipe. I absolutely love the cup that you poured too much glaze on. Its stunning to me. Thanks for the stream!

    Actually Brushing on the new ancient copper as we speak! You’re right, the newer version definitely looks darker, but still pretty. Thanks for the review! ❤

    Thanks for the comparison. I'm glad I have a whole bottle of old recipe. But, I am also glad there is something similar that is actually available. It helps greatly to know the new recipe will come out darker.

    Thank you so much for this, I was wondering how the new would stack up! The new is definitely darker. but still beautiful. I now pour most of my glazes also.

    For me I think that the older one is better. The new one is just a bit too dark. I know that if I make two separate loads, one in new and one in the old, the old would get more attention, and sell better. What a shame, it was one of my favourites. Thanks for doing this, great video. 😊

    I agree with what your conclusions. It looks like the new recipe is also sensitive to how thick it is because those areas come out darker. So New ancient copper use porcelain or light clay body and avoid build up where it is thick.

    New version seems closer to Mayco copper float now. For sure it's darker then the original. Thank you for testing. I still have some old ancient copper not sure if I will get the new or just use copper float. Amaco did a good job with trying to recreate the glaze but it isn't the same. This is a great video. Thank you for this information.

    Thank you for doing this. I agree. Old AC is lighter than new AC. Fortunately I have a half bottle of the old. Several years old. It’s gotten thick. How do you recommend that I thin it AND what should the “thickness “ be for pouring it onto a piece? TIA.

    Thanks for doing this comparison. I have learned a lot from you over the years.
    I’ve struggled with getting ancient copper to shine like yours. Do you do a fast cool down, ie taking the plugs out of the kiln early. I heard this may make the crystals show off their sparkle more. Is this something you’re aware of? And do you do a slow, medium or fast cook time? Also are you in a humid or dry climate? I’m in the mountain desert of Utah. Do you think this makes a difference when firing?

    • @chrisdotdash5154
      @chrisdotdash5154 2 месяца назад +3

      I too have gotten both matte and glossy results. A faster cool will result in a glossier finish and more crystals. Slower cool will give you a more matte result. I would do a medium speed firing with a fast cool. Hope this helps.
