In my Native American tribe, we have a legend, The Basket Lady. People say that if you don’t listen to your parents she will come and put you in her basket and bring you to her house and boil you in her stew.

La Llorona is not also known as Bloody Mary. They are two different legends. While there’s many different variations of Bloody Mary they almost always end in a woman dying in front of a mirror. La Llorona drowned in the river. She’s referred to as the Weeping Woman.
Urban legends are always fascinating to me cause they can span across multiple cultures and countries with so many similarities from people on the other side of the world
@@kaylimerriman2913 I'm with you on that, and I even have a little fun fact! You know about the Appalachian phenomenon of the mimicking of voices? I was born and raised at the foot of Alps, and there's a legend about people disappearing after following the desperate cry of a baby, deep in the woods. It is said that whatever's out there is NOT a baby, but in fact a creature mimicking almost perfectly the sound of a baby crying to lure people. 👀
@@LoneWolf-ei6nmwe have Fisherr Cats in my area. I've been told that explains reports of children and women crying for help in the woods. I've personally heard fishers. While freaky as all hell, nobody is mistaking those screams as a human in need of help.
I fell for the same click bait title. Creators really know how to get people to click on the video when us viewers think there's some truth to it. I'm bummed I fell for the title. I will say though call me kris did a video not to long ago about the whistling man. There was an animated video to go along with her audio and it was good. I enjoyed it at least!
because the title was decided on after the video was recorded and edited. "urban legends that are true" is a lot more attention grabbing than "urban legends"
Same and actually when I watched that episode of supernatural I looked it up and the lore in the show is actually correct that the legend did originate in Ohio
Love these compilations! Note: La Llorona is pronounced “La Yorona” because in Spanish, the double L is pronounced like a Y. At least for us with American and Canadian accents. In a Spanish accent it’s almost a soft J sound deep in the throat, but for us non-native speakers, the Y sound is perfectly appropriate.
I live on the Isle of Wight in the UK and its said to be one of the most haunted places in the world, I've had paranormal experiences everywhere from my primary school to the forest near my old house to the hotel I used to work in, but one of my favorite stories is the ghosts of steephill cove. this area was used to smuggle contraband over from France, and there's a whole system of caves and trails as well as smuggler's lodge further up the hill, and the whole area is said to be haunted by the ghosts of smugglers and fishermen.
I’m American and this is what I know as well. I’ve never heard of La Llorona being referred to as Bloody Mary as she’s associated with water, not blood.
Celina, you have no idea how much you’ve helped me through the most stressful and trouble times in my life.. from loosing my mom and all the spirals that came after. Never stop doing what you do❤
I listened to this on the way to work- none of these freaked me out until you told your experience of a black eyed child. Every hair on my body stood up.
Been super sick for last 3 days. With my depression full out. Been having dark thoughts. Thank you celina for posting videos, especially these type of videos it makes me feel more calm. *Virtual hug* Appreciate you! ❤
I LOVE Urban Legends! They are some of the only spooky stuff that actually scares me. I don't scare easily, but Urban Legends always give me the chills. I know most of them, but hearing some with your amazing story telling talent is awesome!
She's such an amazing storyteller for real ahhh Yo, you and me are the same lol - can I ask for suggestions? I know a few, but there's always more to learn! 👀
@@LoneWolf-ei6nm "The Hookman" and its various retellings are always good. The Japanese legends "Man-Faced Dog" and "Red Cloak". I LOVE the story of the Filipino "Aswang" and the "Nuno sa Punso". @@Softsqueakyduck I may know the "Red Cloak" with its Japanese name "Aka Manto", but I'm not sure it's the same one, so I'll read about it regardless - all of the others sound unfamiliar so I'm definitely learning about new legends now, thank you so much! 🥹
I cried every time Celina said “Llorona” with an L sound Very painful. And El SilbOn- like bond w/o the d…. Crazy how I was literally thinking abf him the whole video too.
My mother knocking on my bedroom door right as Celina finished the last story is absolutely gonna haunt me…. Time to put up some fresh protection runes
9:04 Bloody Mary was actually a real person. Mary I of England was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She was originally ruled legitimate and was in the will to become the first regnant queen of england until Henry VIII had a jousting accident which gave him brain damage. Mary was ruled illegitimate and was taken out of the will. She was shunned away and treated inequal to her sister (Elizabeth I, child of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII) who was then also treated the same when Jane Seymour, Henry's third wife, gave birth to Edward VI. After Henry VIII died, Edward took over as Monarch and lived to 15. Lady Jane Grey was Queen after (Never crowned) but only after 9 days Mary imprisoned Jane and took the crown, becoming the first Queen Regnant (Jane was never crowned). Jane got put on trial along with her husband and his two brothers, being found guilty of High treason but Mary never followed through with the executions. Everything was going alright, Mary didnt mind Jane and didnt want to hurt her for no reason. Jane didnt mind living in the tower of london since she was treated fairly and still had her life. The people started to riot against Mary because she wasn't protestant and was instead Catholic. They protested against her marriage to Philip II too, which made him not want to go to England to marry her. Jane's Father and another relative (I think brother) joined these riots because they wanted Jane released and Mary to step down. Mary heard of Jane's father and relative doing this and decided to follow through with Jane's punishment after all. Jane, her husband, and his two brothers were executed shortly after. Because Mary was a roman catholic (unlike her father and sister) she turned England Catholic again, executing people who spoke out against Catholicism and such. Because of this, and sadly her gender, she faced criticism and was given the nickname 'Bloody Mary'. Ironically enough, she killed 280-287 people. Her father (Henry VIII) killed up to 57,000 people and her sister (Elizabeth I of England) has been said to have executed more than Mary but the exact number isnt known.
17:58 as a Native, I don't think you should try that if you're talking about doing that to find a wendigo because you can't stop it. Also, the wendigo can't feel anything other then hunger as it's heart is a heart of a ice
@Punk_that_wears_cow_socks Your a native? That is so cool! How much percent? I am asking that because I have an adopted aunt who is 50% Native and I also have a friend who is around 25% Native.
Just told my husband "my favorite youtuber only post on Saturday. I'm going outside to watch and the kids are not to disturb me."🤨 he laughed said "Ok". Lol 😊❤
I also had a strange experience but it was over the phone! Does anyone know if there are any ghosts/legends of a spirit or something that will mimic someone you know over phone? I was about 11 years old, the home phone rang, I answered and it was my "aunt," this "person" or it sounded absolutely like my aunt, they knew my full name, they knew my town, they knew it was a hot summer and how a storm had just hit 2 days before. I had a 30 minute conversation with who I thought was my aunt. My mom was at work, but she finished about an hour later and came home, I told her her sister had called. My mom rang my aunt, but my aunt was confused and said she never called, she didn't have that conversation with me. I'm still so freaked out, and completely confused, anyone else with a phone experience like this? Mimic ghosts/legends are terrifying, especially as I really feel that's what rang me.
I don't have one over the phone. That sounds really uncomfortable and unsettling.a glitch in timeliness, maybe, if you believe in that sort of thing.♡❤ My only experience like that, was in a heavy sleep, and got woken up by someone calling my name, in the same cadence and tone that my my mum, sisters or nieces would wake me. (They all sound really similar calling out to me.) Home alone, neighbours out, too. Trailed off after I woke up, not as I woke up 🤷♀️
Not ever over the phone, i did have a dream once that i was talking to my dead aunt over the phone she told me before i woke up to lock the door, i woke up and my mom ran out to do errands and my door was unlocked! I also sometimes here a female voice calling “cesc” thats my nickname but to be safe i dont acknowledge it cuz it could be a mimic but who knows, thats the thing with spirits you bever really know
So I've never heard of instances with the phone of people who are still alive, but I've heard stories of people receiving phone calls from loved ones who recently passed, so some people do believe that paranormal things can happen over the phone.
Yes its South Korean. Its like a game and the only way to keep from dying is to murder someone. But thats just a legend.its also a movie i think its called the phone game.
So fun, traumatic story, at a slumber party in the early 90s (I was 8 or 9) we watched Candyman. Immediately after the movie was over, the girl who lived there said we need to play Candyman and Bloody Mary. Me, not wanting to seem like a chicken, went into the bathroom and even though I didn’t say the words, I was terrified afterwards. In the movie, he doesn’t always attack right away so the fact that nothing happened in that moment did nothing to ease my fear. I actually faked sick and had my mom come get me. After this, I could not sleep with a mirror in my room. I actually didn’t put a mirror in my room until I was in my late 20s all bc I was terrified of seeing Candyman and Bloody Mary in the mirror.
Selena is truly a master storyteller. She doesn't come across as fake and phony like so many of the people that we find on youtube. I think I've only heard maybe two or three of these urban legends before. That's pretty good
16:30 I remeber hearing about Wendigo's in Disney's Ducktales...😂❤ Me if I ever meet a Wendigo: "You're not hungry, you're bored... Drink some water!"❤😂
I love the Kappa! My brother is married to a Japanese woman and they have a cartoonized version of it. When we went to Japan the malls have merch and plushies of a cute version of it. The spare bedroom i slept in while i visited had a 5ft version of the kappa lmao.
I grew up with this version of the Kappa from the Harvest Moon games as well, because the spirit is commonly associated with children there seems to be nostalgia with it and it has been made cute and is commonly collected due to that, I'm quite fond of it as well due to that. It seems in Japan it is also seen more as being mischievous instead of actually evil, like wanting to play with children in the water and not realizing that they will drown. I think I remember something also about if you give it gifts it might give you good luck? Which was how it was portrayed in Harvest Moon.
Why do I feel like this would be BOMB as a podcast??? I mean it’s always so fun to watch, imagine how cool it would be to be able to listen to it as a podcast!!
Hi Celina! I love Llarona bc I actually read abt her in a book! In the book “The Summer of the Mariposas”, they paint her as a sad woman who didn’t do anything wrong and tried to save her kid:)
This is literally insane but when she introduced the last story "the white death." She said it will make you look over your shoulder. So naturally I jokingly looked over my shoulder and my WHITE cat scared the sh!t out of me 😂
We played Bloody Mary by saying "Bloody Mary, I have your son." Queen Mary I of England was supposed to appear, angry that she never had children which is why she was killed.
Okay so this comment has absolutely nothing to do with the video itself, but the ad for the Stormburst Vessis. My fiance and I both got a pair 2 years ago and we both still absolutely LOVE them. He works outdoors so it's perfect for him and I work in a hospital laboratory so it helps protect from any spilled/dropped bodily fluids lol I stand by these shoes! They're amazing and comfortable and we love working in them.
Just a thought but what if Hugging Molly isn't what you should be afraid of. What if she is protecting you from the truly terrifying that you never even knew was there? What if that is her purpose?
Oh my gosh, yay! I love urban legends! The Kuchisake Onna is one of my favourite ones, and it was such a meta moment hearing talking about after I left a comment about around a year and a half ago? Lowkey hope it helped the research, ngl 🙈❤️ I could hear you talk about legends all day every day, the way you recount them is incredible! I'm going with my own personal interest here, but some other interesting ones to look into are Aka Manto, Teke teke/Bata Bata, Kashima Reiko, the purple mirror, the black dog, the telephone game and obviously, being European, I shall add the Banshee/weeping lady/washer woman, as I am fortunate enough to live where Celtic culture reached in continental Europe... These are a lot and I might have gotten some names wrong, but for anyone who shares my curiosity, have fun! 😁❤️
Me too! After I watched that episode, I was so scared to look in a mirror for a month. It didn't help that while watching it, my dad said her name three times😅
I watched that for the first time at 2am in the house before finally going up to bed. Did not know they my boyfriend had moved a mirror. I caught my own reflection and nearly pooped. Decided on one more episode before bed.
Always a phenomenal fun time with you and Adam! If you’re ever in the Belfast area, I’d love to take you to some of the local haunts here as well as in Scotland. My great nana took me as a wee lass to the Borley in Essex, England and some other brilliant spots. Taught me so much about our history and things to do to ward off the naughty spirits! She died at 104 years old in 1992. Sassy all the way to the end. 💚🍀
Bäckahästen is a Scandinavian one I've always been fond of, it's similar to a Kelpie kinda. It's a big, beautiful horse that lures children to ride on it and then jump in streams and rivers to drown them, it would also lure other horses and their riders into the water to drown them. Then there is Näcken, a naked dude playing a fiddle, often sitting on a rock in a stream. Either it would lure you into the water to drown you, but if you could withstand the power of the music you could barter with him and get his fiddle, only problem is if you played the fiddle, you wouldn't be able to stop and anyone who was dancing to the music would dance until they died.
Celina!!!!!!!!!!! ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉 If you ever come to Springfield MO for the Pythian Castle, I'd DIE if I could go! I've never been ghost hunting but what LOVE to go with you and/or Kris for my first! ❤🎉
When i was a wee little gal i had two friends [11F] [11F], when they were small they went outside while their parents were inside, as they were out there they were jokingly telling ghost stories. That was until they heard wailing in the distance, while they were telling the story of la Lorona…but it turned out to be their parents playing a prank. That was a story they would tell every two seconds :(
I am from New Jersey and I LOVE the jersey devil. I've been to what's left of his house and even camped out in the pineys trying to find him when I was younger. (mostly it was just my friends and I scaring each other haha) It made me so happy that you added him to this video ^_^
To the folks in the comments talking about the mispronunciation of LA Llorona, are you also commenting on the videos of non native English speakers who mispronounce Anglecized names? My dad is from Panama and my mom's side is Creole. I grew up with Latin Spanish, Creole, and English as "first languages," but not everyone had my or your own upbringing. Celina obviously isn't a fluent Spanish speaker and ya'll know she did not mean any disrespect when she mispronounced this. Yes, she made a small mistake, but there was no ill intent behind it. I've listened to true crime cases where Spanish speakers mispronounced names, especially Ted Bundy. I saw 0 comments correcting their pronunciation. You can't say something to one person and let the other person make it when they make the same mistake. Can we please let this go? Celina is not a disrespectful person and was not being purposely insensitive.
Typical double standard. Non English speaker has thick accent to which they mispronounce words? Well, English isn’t their first language- it’s to be expected. It’s great that they try! English speaker mispronounces words in another language? Lazy! Ignorant! Typical fat uneducated American! Maybe I am exaggerating here, but it is a trend that I have noticed.
My theory for how the wendigo story came about is that since these indigenous tribes regularly partook in cannibalism, some of their people started suffering from prions. It’s what you get if you eat certain parts of the human brain. It makes someone act abnormal and look malnourished. They’ll start laughing hysterically and their nerves will be shot so they’ll be moving sporadically. I assume since this started happening, and no one knew what was happening, the people back then thought that the infected were turning into some sort of monster. And so they came up with the name “Wendigo” then throughout history the creature became more and more creature like rather than sick humans. Like a game of telephone where each time it’s told, something is different. I’m not sure if this is actually what happened. But it seems solid to me. I’m super interested in prions and the wendigo though.
celina, love these videos! i have a request though- could you start posting links to your sources in your descriptions? and maybe put the names of the legends (or whatever topic you’re talking about) up on the screen so that people can learn more about them outside the video? it would just make it all more accessible for people like me that have auditory processing disorders. thanks!
@@Girlwiththebighair the only issue with this is that usually the transcripts are auto captions, and a lot of the time they don’t caption things correctly. they’re useful as a loose guide to see what’s being said, but they also don’t provide an outside list of sources for the video topics as a means of additional information, unfortunately
I love you and your videos so much! For future reference only, "El" means "The" so when you say "the El Chupacabra" you're saying "the The Goatsucker" haha
Love that you shared a story on a small country like Singapore! ❤ (SG represent!) Tho just a minor correction, when you talked about the Changi Hospital, Changi is pronounced like "Chang-e". Just FYI.😉Love your vids!
"Tchupa cóbura" your accent is so cute ❤ when I was a child, the Chupa Cabra was the trend news and everybody was desperate about that creature, some people think the animals were killed by extraterrestrials, some people were trying to explain with science, describing as a bat attack or some blood sucker animal... but after few months and many people realizing the absurd ideas behind the stories, nobody talked about it anymore, at least here were I live, I don't know how people remember or talkabout it around my country, 😅 but here in São Paulo remains only a good legend 😊 (chupa cabra - in our accent down here at Brasil you can say the "ch" sound like "sh" sound you do in "short" => "shupa") (just for curiosity, La Llorona here we call like "chorona", and it is the same sound... 😊 you said lorona and I understood clearly even though I know the sound... and, if it was me talking in spanish, my brazilian accent would made me say jiorona 😂😂😂😂) Nice legends, here we have a lot! 31th october it is our "Saci day", one of the most popular legends around my country but not the most scary one... we have a plent of scary ones 😅
OMFG THE SECOND SHE SAID "La Llrona" I fucking FLIPPED my karate master saw her when he was a kid and always tells us this story around Halloween. The thing is, he didn't know about the story until he told his parents..
I, as a michigander have grown up with the black eyed children, we listened to stories almost every car ride and they still freak me out no matter what.

"urban legends that are true" is a lot more attention grabbing than "urban legends"
yh it's just a title that sounds better so you'd want to click on it. urban legends are just legends that COULD be true but arent

Thanks for sharing but know that she can’t even pronounce English and who cares because she’s trying lol
I was looking for this comment😂 I immediately heard the mispronounciation. I only know because I took 5 years of Spanish, so I understand.
I am from Argentina so the double L and Y makes more of a “sh” sound
as a puerto rican their pronunciation is killing me 😭
Omg I cringed every time it was mispronounced 😅 (Spanish is my first language)
I live on the Isle of Wight in the UK and its said to be one of the most haunted places in the world, I've had paranormal experiences everywhere from my primary school to the forest near my old house to the hotel I used to work in, but one of my favorite stories is the ghosts of steephill cove. this area was used to smuggle contraband over from France, and there's a whole system of caves and trails as well as smuggler's lodge further up the hill, and the whole area is said to be haunted by the ghosts of smugglers and fishermen.
Coming from Australia:
I was always told that Bloody Mary- referred to Mary Tudor queen of England. She had a bit of a dark past.
Aussie here and confirm.
Another Aussie here, can also confirm that I was told this
As a brit. Can confirm. She got the name from the protestants that were killed under her rein as she tried to reinstate Catholicism to england
As a Brit, I can confirm this is true
I’m American and this is what I know as well. I’ve never heard of La Llorona being referred to as Bloody Mary as she’s associated with water, not blood.
I loved every minute of this! The tension and the eerie vibes were so well done. Can’t wait for more!

Mary, Queen of Scots
@@TaliaAked mary queen of scots was different to mary I. mary queen of scots was queen of scottland and mary I's first cousin

@Punk_that_wears_cow_socks
Your a native? That is so cool! How much percent? I am asking that because I have an adopted aunt who is 50% Native and I also have a friend who is around 25% Native.
@GraceJohnsen-17 I don't really know the percentage since it's a pretty weird question and not really asked
Ok. Thank you! I still think its pretty cool!
Just told my husband "my favorite youtuber only post on Saturday. I'm going outside to watch and the kids are not to disturb me."🤨 he laughed said "Ok". Lol 😊❤
I love how she says "The el Chupacabra", when " el" means "the" so she's saying "The the Chupacabra".
That sounds really uncomfortable and unsettling.a glitch in timeliness, maybe, if you believe in that sort of thing.♡❤
My only experience like that, was in a heavy sleep, and got woken up by someone calling my name, in the same cadence and tone that my my mum, sisters or nieces would wake me.
I think I've heard one but I don't remember it
So fun, traumatic story, at a slumber party in the early 90s (I was 8 or 9) we watched Candyman.

I had a pet snapping turtle and his name was Kappa 😂

I'm going with my own personal interest here, but some other interesting ones to look into are Aka Manto, Teke teke/Bata Bata, Kashima Reiko, the purple mirror, the black dog, the telephone game and obviously, being European, I shall add the Banshee/weeping lady/washer woman, as I am fortunate enough to live where Celtic culture reached in continental Europe... Hope y'all are having a great weekend! Just saw your snaps about staying in your woods, super excited for that video! Be safe!

Exactly! Celina did not mean it disrespectfully
L LLP
I love the Haunted Estate! Always so fun and interesting, thank you Celina and Adam!
