    For a device this expensive jagged lines should not be an issue at all. This is a device that does basically one thing and should do it flawlessly.

    I wonder what's so important to Remarkable that fixing the writing on a WRITING TABLET isn't a priority. Like you're doing something wrong if you don't want to fix the core functionality.
    Honestly thank you Voja for all the hard work and testing you do!

    I am so close to cancelling my pre-order even though I've been waiting for months and months now... These ppl don't seem to appreciate the unbelievable luck of having a guy like Voya to test and talk about all the issues and positives of their devise... That alone makes me sick. But to have a random guy fix the jagged lines issue and them just saying they'll think about thinking about maybe considering a fix in the future... My God they couldn't make me more angry if they tried...

      Voja told me to try it out and see, because I was thinking the same thing. I just got my reMarkable 2. I love it. It really helps me think. Even with drawing and the jagged lines. I am going to be patient with the jagged lines and wait for the fix. So I'll say the same to you. Try it out, you have nothing to loose.

      Yeah honestly I'd say the same thing too. Wait till you get your reMarkable and test it out for yourself. I was thinking of cancelling my pre order but I decided to wait. And thankfully the jagged lines dont seem to be a big issue (atleast on my tablet). I ended up really liking it. So it would definitely be in your best interest to wait and see

      I understand the frustration. I was close to canceling as well... but I did not cancel in the end. I'm glad I did not because I have grown to become very fond of this device over three weeks now and incorporated it into my daily working processes. Try it out. And sent it back to them if you are still frustrated - That's my ten cents.

    Hey Voya! Excellent video, once again! Thanks!
    It would be very interesting if you apply the hack for the jagged lines and then run the D.E.S.T.A. test again.
    Then, it may become clear if the if the good D.E.S.T.A. score of remarkable 2 is owed to the fact that remarkable 2 does not smooth the lines. Also, it can be seen how this new D.E.S.T.A. score of rM2 compares to Boox products score.
    Again: great job in all of your videos.

    Hahah. I'm chasing them for an issue where what I write is visibly displaced from the tip and their latest response was:
    "Hi, Josh!
    The behavior of the reMarkable display is affected by several different factors. When developing the reMarkable 2 we made several decisions and found the best tradeoffs between these factors. We apologize for the issues that might bring about your use of the device.
    We are continuously working on improving the user experience of the reMarkable paper tablet. Our team is now aware of your concern and will consider if this is something that might be worked on in the future.

    I have tested the filter and it works great. There is no noticeable latency for the low to medium filtering. At max smoothing one can see some latency but it did not bother me. After testing many setting I think medium smoothing works great. I also checked that it didn't increase CPU usage and there is no noticeable effect here. The implementation works cleanly with the device as one do not need to replace files. Only update a config file to utilise the filter. Ideally an implementation where one can choose how smooth one wants the lines vs latency from the user interface, but at least this is proof of concept that works as is. There is nothing that hindering this from being deployed from Windows or Mac, but it would involve using a utility that supports ssh

    Just another thought about this issue and the lack or hesitation of needed future updates on the rM2, I think this "canned" response from Remarkable may be due to the hardware limitations they have used to build the rM2 as compared to their competitors. Even though they have essentially doubled the hardware capacity compared to the rM1, it may still not be enough to address the issues that have been noted by Voija and others in the community. Just a brief comparison of hardware specs in the same categories between the Note Air and the rM2:
    rM2 h/w specs:
    CPU: 1.2GHz Dual Core ARM A9
    RAM: 1GB LPDDR3
    Storage: 8GB
    OS: Codex(Custom OS)
    Note Air specs:
    CPU: 1.8GHz Octa-core ARM(Qualcomm Snapdragon 636) (8 cores/ 8 hardware threads)
    RAM: 3GB LPDDR4X
    Storage: 32GB
    OS: Standard Android OS
    Given the specs above, I'm guessing this is what may be an issue for the Remarkable team to come up with any substantial changes that is suggested by their users:
    1. The CPU may be somewhat under-powered to fix and/or add features such as removing jaggies in lines and keep the latency low.
    2. The amount of RAM requirement needed to add additional features such as optimization of reading very large ebooks and /or changing font attributes may be a challenge.
    3. Storage may be another issue when it comes to major firmware updates (if they are to be supported) may also be a challenge since usable space is in short supply on the device.
    4. The OS is a custom forked version of Linux as compared to using Android which has been and is still used in many portable devices around the world. So in this case, the Note Air has a definite advantage by using established APIs for its app features, in that it does not require Boox to develop an API from "scratch" every time a new feature update is added or needed.
    Again, this is just speculation on my part so take it with a grain of salt as I don't have any information on the inner workings of the rM2, both hardware and software wise.

    Great video once more Voja, thank you. Here’s a hypothesis. We know there’s a layer that some owners have peeled off and one owner got to click when pressing on it in some areas of the screen. Different units have this layer laminated on with different amounts of the laminating glue/chemical, and/or different success/attachment/closeness. When you’re tilting the marker you’re actually affecting how much you’re pressing down on this layer/over what area the pressure’s being applied. It’s the closeness of the layer to the underlying detectors, once pressed down, that affects the degree of jaggedness. The ruler’s affecting this closeness two ways: 1) the depth of the ruler and 2) pressure on the layer reducing the distance between it and the detectors.

    Thank you for pointing to the Reddit post. The fix worked on a Windows machine running WSL. It is fairly easy to set up as compared to setting up a standalone Linux machine.
    To my surprise, the fix doesn't even need a reboot. It first asks for the IP address of the reMarkable and then asks the "amount of smoothing" one wants. That's it! Upon choosing the smooth setting, within 5 seconds, on reMarkable, things are fixed :)
    Plus, upon running the ./install.sh script, there is an option to uninstall the fix. In a sense, this is a valid "temporary solution" that is also future proof.

    great investigation. So the reason why some people have less jagged line issues because they might have a different writing angle. Might also explain why nibbs are wearing down differently. So maybe all the devices are the same but the writing isn't

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 года назад

      Who knows, but yes, the angle affecting the jaggies + pressure, definitely means that it will vary wastly from person to person. That's why the ruler +vertical + Fineliner + high pressure is the most consistent test.

    I'm sorry that was a boilerplate response. It looks like they added a line suggesting they are aware you are a RUclipsr. I received similar replies to a couple of my suggestions. Saying they are aware or may look into it type of responses are all talking points. I still like the product but this company has proven multiple times they have zero respect for their users. They need a change of leadership in this company.
    They probably were always aware of this issue. They know to fix it might be difficult or cause other unintended consequences.
    Nothing has changed. There is nothing here to be hopeful about. Except they may have been trying to fix it from the beginning.

  • @XOriente

    My question to the group. Have we verified this phenomenon with all pen types? It seems to me that some of the pens (like the ballpoint, or pencil) are more sensitive to pressure in making thicks and thins in the strokes vs. a tool like the marker or the fine liner. That might have been the “trade-off” language they were alluding to. I also have a Mobiscribe Origin and I get jaggies on that device too. For me, it’s not a deal-breaker, as my handwriting doesn’t show it as much.

  • @MikyLestat
    @MikyLestat 4 года назад

    So basically this is a hardware issue related to the sensors and the screen. The sensors are either too sensitive or too weak to determine the correct position. This is why we get the hagged lines with the Onyx Boox Air when it is above the screen- either the sensors are not sensing the position correctly or because he is holding the pen in the air and his hand is shaky.

  • @silcas100
    @silcas100 4 года назад

    The virtual contact surface on the tablet (which is dependent on the deformation of the tip attributed to pressure and wear) must surely play an important role on the way the ink line is transcribed. Don't you think so?

    It is important for the supplier to find the real cause of the symptom. It is then a matter of either eliminating the cause, if practically possible, or finding ways of mitigating it.

Nevetheless today sadly I ordered also the boox air to make a direct comparison because I am very worried by some missing function, mostly: note-search, split screen, colours and a so closed system for pdfs which my company does not allow to install on work pc. RM2 can just replace only my moleskine without improving the experience on pdf and ppt and without a search engine..I will receive the boox air in the next days and then decide which one to return. The new Paper-like panel could be causing some noise that the software isn't able to filter out. From what i heard on the internet, it's a different panel than the one on the Remarkable 1. It's could explain why the issue is more prominent on version 2.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 года назад +1

      That and the latency. In order to get such aggressive latency timing they had to sacrifice something, and they seem to have sacrificed quality for speed.

  • @fridl1000
    @fridl1000 4 года назад

    The linked fix shows that my assumption from the last video is very likely. I assumed, that they don't do much filtering as they want a very fast responding screen. So you can accumulate more points for a low pass filter, but then the line will be displayed later. (you can probably check that by DESTA(?) if you should be able to apply the fix from _funkey_.) Or they print it directly, and it will be "corrected" by the low pass filtered version after a short time. That could solve both of the issues, but does probably feel less "paper like". They will figure something out. And regarding there reply: If I would be the company, I also wouldn't make a big promise, but answer more or less the same way they did, even if I work super hard on exactly that issue.
    Once more: Thank you a lot for the videos and lets hope reMarkable watched all of them and build there internal ToDo-List by your noted points!

    So the hack works on Windows as well (I could do it). Here is a comment from reMarkable Facebook group how to do it:
    "This fix was simple to implement from a Windows PC and definitely smoothes out the jagged writing on my RM2.
    Connect to the RM2 using WinSCP to apply the patch manually.
    Copy librecept.so to /usr/lib folder on the tablet.
    Add the line:
    Environment=LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/librecept.so
    Right below the line "[Service]" in the file:
    /lib/systemd/system/xochitl.service
    Restart the tablet to invoke the change.
    You can download the library file directly from this URL:
    github.com/funkey/recept/raw/main/librecept.so
    You should make a copy of the xochit.service file."
    Here is a link, how to use WinSCP:

    Most likely, Remarkable 2 designers decided to skipped the low pass filter (or some other form of de-noising the raw data) in order to reduce the pen latency and make the claim how much faster it is vs remarkable 1. I'm also now wondering if having little to no gap between the display and the pen could have exacerbated the issue more (compared to note 3 for example).

    • @factor27
      @factor27 4 года назад

      That's exactly my theory. They've already advertised their super low latency and if they have to add post processing while rendering, those numbers will no longer be accurate and one of their main selling points with the 2 will be invalidated.
      One trade-off could be to delay the post-processing a few hundred milliseconds after you finish drawing to "correct" the data (they could even make this an optional toggle).

    Voja, the way you approach a problem is always so interesting. Since rM styli are angle sensitive and others are not, do other styli create different degrees of jaggies? Also is nib thickness a factor?
    _funkey_ states the lowpass filter solution will cause a small increase in latency. When installing the patch, you select the degree of filtering from 2 to 32 (default is 16). Using 0 will cancel the smoothing function of the filter. The higher the filtering factor the greater the latency.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 года назад +2

      Interestingly, it's not the stylus that does the tilt detection, it's the tablet itself. So tilt will work with any stylus :)
      As for the fix, i have tried it last night, so I'll try to grab some time to make a tutorial on how to install it and change the values easily, and more importantly, to run it through the DESTA and compare the latency at different levels of smoothing and end results. Maybe i get it for Saturday, but we'll see. Too much stuff to do, but I know this is something a lot of people would find helpful, as it solves the problem very nicely :)

    1-They loved that Voya praised their device throughtout the review series. (He loves it, he really loves it)
    2-Then started cursing when the jagged line issue was pointed out.(Damn it, everyone now knows.)
    After reading that letter, I doubt they will do a fix. I hope they prove me wrong for the sake of the users, But I doubt it.
    They were probably counting on just a few owners complaining about it on social media (reddit, Facebook , etc.) and that it would blow over and eventually be forgotten. They didn't expect a youtuber with so many subscribers pointing out the issue. Now the ball is on their court and they must act to fix the issue. If they don't, it would affect their bottom line.
    What's even more damaging is that a fix was found so quickly by a user instead of their software development department. They really need to do better. If they can't, then open up the software and let the community make the device better.

    Another issue appears near the corners of the tablet. In my case, what i write is visibly displaced from the tip. And by shifting the pen very little, the ink sometimes appears 2mm higher than the tip, sometimes 2mm lower. Which makes it impossible to precisely control where to write. If I draw lines using a ruler in these areas, they appear extremely crooked... Did someone else notice this ?

    Don't despair. That was a PR response, full of hand waiving and void of substance. You could change a few words and apply that response to almost any question or concern. It may be hollow because the person responding doesn't have any insights to share, or it may be company policy to keep things hidden from the public, but it's almost certainly not an accurate picture of the internal engineering process. They may be working on it, there may be real engineering complications that make it a difficult problem, or they may not think it's important.

    I commented in your original video, about jagged lines, that reMarkable must have been aware of this behaviour prior to release. My fear then was that they would treat it as a feature not as a problem. The device just doesn't seem worth it compared to the competition. It provides only 2 things, note taking and a reader, both of which seem compromised! I should not have to search out third party or community solutions. I am really wondering if I still want this device, and, the Onyx Boox Note Air is looking more and more appealing!

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 года назад

      According to reMarkable, that's something that's a part of the design and they don't consider it a high priority. Nicer brushes and EPUB fonts are higher priority than this is. I find that very strange, if I'm honest.

    • @LionLion632
      @LionLion632 4 года назад

      Hi Voya. I found something interesting. If I write on pdf file, the jagged line issue is much getting better. However, if I write on the template that RM provides, my writing gets ugly. I'm not sure this is just transient or not.

  • @ondrejpapez4670
    @ondrejpapez4670 4 года назад

    I believe the jaggedness could be also attributed to a worn out nib. However, more importantly, what material are these nibs anyways? Can you print them on a 3D printer?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 года назад

      Your belief is wrong, as the jaggedness is persistent with any pen and any nib in any state. This is a hardware "feature". Remarkable have addressed it and it was a design decision to choose this compromise and funkey's fix shows that it's the way they achieved faster latency. When rM2 has a basic filtering, which is used by all devices to avoid this issue, rM2 latency is pretty much the same as any other device. So, it seems that it was a decision to sacrifice quality and precision for that increased speed.
      It also looks like that with the right marketing budget, you can sell any defect to a dedicated audience and let them convince themselves that it's actually a feature. I've heard so far from flat out denial to "it's like that on real paper too", or "I don't have it" and then they would show an example that's totally jagged out.
      The bottom line is this, as far as I'm concerned, this is a $600 package (if you buy the device with marker plus and a folio) and at that price range and with the set of software and functional limitations it has, it has just one job and one job only: offer THE BEST uncompromising writing experience and results. Unfortunately, the results are severely compromised, and they have been, intentionally so.
      As for the nibs, no, they are not hard plastic. You can print them, but you won't have anything remotely close to the feel of the original nib.

    • @ondrejpapez4670
      @ondrejpapez4670 4 года назад +1

      @@MyDeepGuide Thanks for this exhaustive reply Voja.
      In regards to the jaggedness, upon seeing all your uncompromising reviews, I was concerned that when recieving my own RM2 I would use the 30 day period to return it. However, when using it I realised that for my use case, it is really no biggie.
      For my workflow, it is a great tool. I use it for my consultancy job as a notebook. I enjoy the fact that I can export my creations easily in PDF and send it to the team of colleagues. Having the ability to review PDF documents and read EPUBs is frankly an extra benefit.
      I have been using it quite a lot and I appreciate that I can really forget about a paper trail of notebooks and papers with my notes.
      The battery however, not 14 days by a long shot. I can last somewhere around 3 days - I use it a lot, I wish my laptop would last the same amount of time though :)
      3D printing the nibs, well, I will try it and let you know, there are some impressive materials these days, perhaps I could try testing it.

    I'm batch 7 and I got my unit just last week and I do not have this problem, or at least not to the extent that some have. Drawing a straight line both horizontally and vertically, for me, results in a straight line with a few "pixels" of smooth ups and downs much like you showed with normal use on the Note Air. I am happy I don't have the problem but I sympathize with those who do have it. You simply don't want to find errors in this magnificent device. Ofcourse if it is at the receiving end the digitiser film for example is too thin or the glass/digitiser properties might somehow disperse the signal, (a result for having that pen touching on paper effect even over the glass).
