Losing neil peart feels like losing an old friend. With all the years off listening to rush, and neil peart in interviews and video. He will be missed indeed
I'm a guitarist and found myself watching this through to the end because there's lessons, smarts and philosophy of great value to all musicians and actually, anyone involved in creative endeavors of any kind. Peart brought me here and I'm quite seriously heartbroken over his passing. Been binging on interviews with him; so insightful and articulate. May he be at peace.
DRUM CHANNEL (and many others) have the POWER to bring together all kinds of incredible musicians, to make improvs they'd never do otherwise. (EX: everyone LOVED the rhythm section of BILL BRUFORD and CHRIS SQUIRE, who never worked together again.... but any major company could've brought those cats in for ONE DAY to improvise and tear it up.) EX: Drum Channel calls up COBHAM and JAN HAMMER, and asks the two of them to come in and just improvise for a few hours! it's insane how badly organized the music biz is! DC and many others could EASILY have brought in Neil Peart, and an incredible bassist (ex: Les Claypool), and an incredible guitarist (let's say Bumblefoot) and just have them IMPROVISE for afew hours! #@!!! SO MANY missed opportunities.
I am comforted by all of the recent uploads that keep Neil here with us. To hear him play, and to hear him speak, keeps him alive. Long live the professor!
I’ve been reading his last book recently and he makes a comment about the end of Rush as well as others things he’s done in the past “I’m not sad it’s over but more grateful for having had the experience.” Taking this as a form of advice has helped process him being gone.
"Some are born to move the world - To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we’d like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you - the blind who once could see - The bell tolls for thee"…. Well Neil...The bell tolls for you kind sir. You inspired me and so many to live those words to the fullest. You were without peer. R.I.P.
I remember reading the lyric sheet to Losing It when I was about 12. I remember asking my older sister, WTF does this mean? I had no frame of reference when I was that young. I understand it all to clear now.
I am literally winded by Neil's passing, still trying to catch my breath.. How can someone I have never met have had such an indelible impact on my life? Because he drove the engine that played the soundtrack to my youth.. Thank you for the inspiration and the 41 year lesson on how to be a monster with both your drumsticks and your pen.. Words simply fail.
This was amazing. Love these drummers. Terry Bozzio is a freaking genius. Doane Perry is awesome. Neil Peart will always be "The Professor". I miss Neil so much. So glad I saw this.
It pains me for the loss of Neil. I've been a drummer for now 40 years this year. Though my influences have been Ringo and Rick Allen, Neil remains the most challenging and in a lot of ways, inspiring. RIP Neil. His loss truly hurts deep.
A great interview with 3 of The World's Best Musicians. If you see the one common thread that exists between them, it's not the drums; it's the self analysis, self criticism and desire to raise the bar of their craft every time they pick up their sticks. Well done.
I am not a drummer, even though my steering wheel disagrees with me. For me, Rush was always my favourite band since I first heard them in 1980 and I don't have to tell you how excellent Neil was behind the kit. However, he was so much more than an fantastic drummer! What I personally related to was the lyrics in the songs. I really felt they spoke to me, and my own philosophical nature. After a horrible personal event happened in my life in 2009, and I was struggling to keep my stuff together. I happened upon Neil's book "Ghost Rider", and I credit it to "saving my life". After hearing about his tragedies with Selena and then Jackie, it really gave me perspective about coping with grief. He handled the grief so well, and pressed on with the band, and even moved on with a new wife and had another daughter! If that isn't an example of perseverance, I don't know what is! Neil was an amazing drummer, but also outstanding human being. It's been 5 days since I heard he passed and I am still grieving about it and processing the information. I never met him, but the words in his songs and especially his books were something very special. For me, he was the white haired Uncle at the fireside sharing his words of wisdom. He earned his nickname The Professor for many reasons.
Neil admired Keith Moon and modeled his style after him. You need very powerful band to carry the drumming of Moon and Peart. The Who could easily match Moon but Rush not so much for Peart.
Like many, I came here for NP, and have been binge-watching everything on YT featuring him. But, what a pleasant surprise in discovering Doane, and I'd not heard Terry in a forum verbally expressing himself to this degree,at least without a predetermined goal of demonstration or teaching.. The jam was fun, but the intellectual exchange between these three was priceless. I am a guitar player, but could listen to these guys for days. Especially pleased to hear Neil in this venue, he was truly relaxed and in his element, involved in exchanging ideas with his peers. It's been the best of the NP I've been absorbing for the last week. Thank you Drum Channel, subscribing.
Why Neil !! Why him of all people, why Neil??.......... The world is so much better with guys like Neil Peart in it !! Never had the pleasure but damn I would have loved to be considered by Neil as one of his friends. This one really stung !!!
I just watched this in it's entirety. Thank you DC so very much for posting this. I'm sure everyone there has a heavy heart as I do at the end of this seeing Neil Peart stading with Doane and Terry knowing his drums are silenced. But you brought them to life with this video, along with his (many) words of wisdom and insight to drumming and life. It was great to laugh at the stories everyone told and I am so inspired by all that was said by these obviously amazing minds and bodies of talent. Thank you again for this post.
This session is Gold. Neil/Terry/Doane musical brilliance - so talented and intelligent. They have embraced and mastered the theory of 'subtraction' in percussion composition. The Q & A and drum demo is priceless - notice how Terry and Doane follow Neil at first, then quickly mesh to compliment each other, at 1:49:35 it's Awesome! Neil lives on.
FREEKIN AMAZING!!!! Sure do Miss Neal He is like the part of my brain thats missing. I could listen to him talk all day. Everytime he speaks i learn something.
I though I might be the only person feeling like "a part of their has been removed" due to their sense of loss. I hope that we can all find some solace, but I really doubt it. Many people in my age group have known Rush since they were in 7th Grade. Many of us at this age are "searching for someone to guide us", to show us the way to be better people. Rush filled a big void (actually they overfilled) for us. So when someone comes along and breaks the container (holding all of that comfort), we struggle to NOT lose all of it!
Watching this video it's incredible to think of Neil´s recent passing . He looks the healthier guy from this video. RIP dear Neil, you will be sorely missed.
Neil Peart carried us all; I know he carried me, certainly. RUSH is major, in my life. When a person is an athlete, and the sport he is active in relies on syncopation and repetition via ever flowing rolling and in rumble, then you know indeed, that you are in recognition. I completed more thousands of miles than I could count, with Neil Peart and RUSH in my blood, making heartbeats. "Marathon" helped me cover more miles, "Subdivisions" validated my view through my ears-mind. RIP Neil. You are my brother, merely 12 days older than I am now, and you left far too soon. My turn. I m only sublimely happy that we lived in this time. Thank you for the success.
I likewise acknowledge Neil and his musical legacy, Bozzio in his for sure, but an overshadowed drummer in this video is Doane Perry. I saw Tull around 02 in Ft Worth and it was a nice theater... They did some unexpected tunes and Doane killed those hard to articulate Barriemore Barlowe parts, (who's a hidden giant of the prog rock drum world) ala Tull. He was very good and his kit sounded nice and full. They did Hunting Girl, which seems easy, til you try to execute it in context! I have seen these 3 men live and Neil 3 times. Always a wonder and a feat to hear those songs played with some reserve at shows, and others like the Vapor Trails show, which was quite slow burn and raw. Terry has the skills to play anything, but Ive not been as impressed with long solo drums to just listen to a lot.
Awesome seeing Neil hand drumming. What I'd really love to see was Neil doing that in Africa as he described in one of his books. He described how he started playing with someone and then little by little the town started to notice and people were dancing and stuff. I could only imagine how that must have been. RIP Sir❣️✌️ Thank You for putting this up. I have the 2 drum jams that Neil did on the Drum Channel. Would love to see more if possible. Can't believe this guy is no longer with us. Heart goes out to his family. True inspiration
Terry's work with U.K. and Zappa is amazing. Doane with Jethro Tull and Of coarse Neil and Rush were the drummer's "must listen" back in the day. And it still is!
Thank you for making this viewable to all. Always dreamt to watch this full. Watching Neil on Bozzios kit is surreal. Rest in Peace Neil Peart. A hero. That is the word that better describes him to me.
Watching Neil tease Bozzio at 19:19 choked me up a bit... He seemed so in his element with those guys; like when Alex and Geddy and He were having dinner... He was such an inspiration to so many of us drummers...Practiced to Neil since 76...Bozzio just stays young...His work in U.K is his best IMO... His Zappa stuff is naturally brilliant but that was a big band with a tyrant leader...U.K gave him 33% ... Listen to The Only Thing She Needs, Or Carry No Cross on Danger Money, if you get a chance...
What a wonderful interview. This is by far a masterclass on brlliant, talented, and masters of their craft. Thank you for putting these three in the same room, WOW!
:)...So glad I spent nearly a half century with Neil AND Bozzio...:)...To we life long fans that know every nuance of Rush, Neil will NEVER DIE.... Look the mist is rising And the sun is peaking through See, the steps grow lighter As I reach their final few Hear, the dancing waters I must be drawing near Feel, my heart is pounding With embattled hope and fear Now, at last I fall before The Fountain of Lamneth I thought I would be singing But I'm tired... out of breath Many journeys end here But, the secret's told the same Life is just a candle And a dream must give it flame The key, the end, the answer Stripped of their disguise Still it's all confusion And tears spring to my eyes Though I've reached a signpost It's really not the end Like Old Sol behind the mountain I'll be coming up again... As a word nerd, and non drummer, I loved the bit where Neil explains the derivation of the word "contraption." being "trap sets." these 3 musicians are so eloquent and passionate about their art. This is like a book that I can't put down.
This was a great format to see the warmth of Neil's personality come through during his banter with his fellow drummers. Some great insights from Doane and Terry as well, and the love for the instrument and each other is really evident here. Neil will be hugely missed.
R.I.P. .NEIL IM HONORED AND PRIVELIGED TO HAVE GROWN UP IN YOUR GENERATION YOU INSPIRED ME AND HELPED ME IN SOME TRYING TIMES IN MY LIFE. THANK YOU! RUSH FOR EVERYTHING.
Having the time to sit and listen to these great and influential drummers/musicians/songwriters is prime. Understanding the mindset and intro-spectural(?) thoughts of their playing, composition, arrangements and their empathy to their counterparts is so insightful to us meebs. RIP Neil Peart. Your music and words will live on forever.
It is enjoyable to hear these greats so enthusiastic about their craft. Neil seems like such a sincere and warm person. It is infectious. May he be blessed. RIP
@jesse10049 UNFORTUNATELY NEIL WAS AN ATHEIST.THOUGH I'VE PRACTISED TO HIS BEATS SINCE'77 I ALSO PRAYED HE'D SEE THAT WE'RE MUCH MORE THAN FLESH,BONE&BLOOD....THE HUMAN SPIRIT.......IS.....WITHOUT QUESTION.
Wonderful interaction between everybody on here. Great stuff!! and yes, you can see it when Neil is talking about something he's excited about... he'd simply light right up! What a true gentleman...and what a lucky thing to have had him around for the while that we did!
I just rediscovered what a master drummer Neil was. My god...he was THAT good! And yes, I have been weeping on and off for a week now at our loss of Neil.
This just reminded me...when I started playing drums around 12 years of age, my next door best friend at the time also had a set of drums. We would take them outside the back yard and jam, just like these guys. As for the gig at the end...who else thinks Neil seems to be the core of it. RIP Professor, you were a great influence on millions.
Losing it watching this, Im a guitarist. Pleaae God tell Neil how much we love him. Sebastian Bach hit it on the head " how can this devastate us so much for someone weve never met?" A lot of us have went through Trauma similar to him I think. Neil Peart FOREVER!!!
That was cool!! 3 of my all-time favorite drummers/percussionists all playing at the same time!! I just can't believe I didn't know that they did this until now. RIP Peart :'(
Great segment no doubt....seems this thing for me has settled in bit by bit. Since late 70's and just resonating with 2112 at 8yrs old, till I picked up drums at the age of 12. It was on; a stream of non-stop Neil always present. This really propelled my own drum craft as it did for so many. For everyone, it's our own personal journey, and now sitting at 50 I realize just how powerful it is when you have meaning in others lives to the point that no one shares the exact same thing but all equally as powerful. For me, I'm blessed to have been here for Neil's time and thankful that his drum craft connected and inspired purpose in my young impressionable life.
Im so happy Neil did these.. Now, I keep asking myself when Im unsure of what to do next with... .... anything.. ... I ask myself, “What would Neil do?” 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you Don/DC for this wonderful episode!..... Quote: Jimmy Chamberlins comment "hits" is perfectly , “A piece of Neil lives in nearly every contemporary drum part in rock- whether people realize it or not.”......Thanks Neil for ALL your musical/drumming/lyricist contributions that will live on forever.
This is so great, to hear these guys. I don't play drums but I respect the intellect of these musicians. They are a credit to music. I could listen all day long. Wow!
This is great. Thanks for posting. Neil’s intellect, knowledge, and musicianship is what makes him a legend. He’s gone way too soon and I’m very sad but at the same time, so incredibly inspired every time I listen to him.
Thank you so much for re-posting this video. Such a wealth of knowledge, experience and wisdom here from 3 incredible drummers. I have concentrated on guitar and songwriting over the past 10 years but the passing of Neil and watching this video is drawing me back to my roots and has me wanting to reconnect with the drumming community. RIP Neil.
This is like watching Neil in a drummers candy shop. I love how he went right into “composer” mode lol Just exploring the next sound one after the other to make it a musical piece, not a “solo” piece. Very cinematic.
As a very poor bass player but a huge music fan, this is one of the best interviews I have ever seen, I found myself smiling through to the end. RIP Neil.
I've watched a few of these discussion type of videos between drummers, but I definitely need to go back and start watching all of them. Such a wealth of wisdom and musicality. Funny enough, Bozzio had more of influence on me when I was younger than Peart (I saw Bozzio do a clinic when I was about 13 and just couldn't pick my jaw up off of the floor...never had the honor of seeing Peart live, unfortunately), but the infinite amount of influence Peart had on, not only the drum community, but music in general, is undeniable. I paid a little bit of attention over the years, but wish I had paid a lot more of it while he was still around....
What a cool jam after a very enjoyable conversation..... A conversation on percussion after a verbal conversation. All 3 are great.... Neil and Terry are 2 of my favorite players..... what a treat seeing and hearing them communicate musically. Don Perry Terry Bozzio and the late great Neil Peart(RIP) Still in shock. Can't believe he's not on this planet anymore
Neil has to have one of the most pleasant speaking voices I have heard.
I say this all the time.
R.I.P Neil Peart.
”We shall never see his like again” -William Shakespeare
Who said drummers were dumb?
Losing neil peart feels like losing an old friend.
With all the years off listening to rush, and neil peart in interviews and video.
He will be missed indeed
Same here.
So true. I'm not even a drummer but I never stop learning, to this day, from Neil.
@peter g Yeah. I wonder how many other drummers had such an influence on non-drummers.
After seeing this it, it took a minute of watching this veddy good sit down.

Watching Neil Peart on a single bongo is priceless.
I learned today from all these guys.love ya Neil.
I am comforted by all of the recent uploads that keep Neil here with us. To hear him play, and to hear him speak, keeps him alive. Long live the professor!
Apart from being an incredible drumming talent, his eloquence, intelligence and voice made him a pleasure to listen to. R.I.P. Mr. Peart.
Just devastating that we’ll never hear Neil’s words of wisdom again. Greatest rock drummer ever! RIP Neil 🥁
Devastating indeed, but at the same time we have this and so much more from him to enjoy forever.
Having a hard time to realise that Neil is no longer here...….it hurts.
yes it does- still numb

This lyric was the first to come to mind when I heard of his death.
I remember reading the lyric sheet to Losing It when I was about 12. I remember asking my older sister, WTF does this mean? I had no frame of reference when I was that young. I understand it all to clear now.

Well expressed!
Could listen to Neil talk all day, so intelligent and thought provoking.
I tried to watch this. I can’t yet. Neil, I love you and miss you Sir.
I understand this. This has been a gut punch.
Slap ,slap.snap out of it .Celebrate his life.
This was amazing. Love these drummers. Terry Bozzio is a freaking genius. Doane Perry is awesome. Neil Peart will always be "The Professor". I miss Neil so much. So glad I saw this.
For those who wanted to know, this was recorded on June 18, 2009.
Thank you for the true date. I needed to have some chronological reference.
It pains me for the loss of Neil. I've been a drummer for now 40 years this year. Though my influences have been Ringo and Rick Allen, Neil remains the most challenging and in a lot of ways, inspiring. RIP Neil. His loss truly hurts deep.

One of the most amazing, talented, interesting, intelligent, sincere, diverse, humble person to grace our world. Rest In Peace Mr. Peart.
i love to see neil so enthusiastic, he shares his knowledge and stories super passionately, what a gem of a human he was.
These are intellectual individuals who are dedicated to their art. Love it 😍
Such a brilliant man, as well as kind-hearted and a monster drummer.
Terry Bozzio admitting to Neil Peart that his style of playing can be intrusive... How can you not love this stuff?

This is the way to interview Neil Peart, talk about drumming with drummers. A true legend. RIP.

How could people this a thumbs down. Disgraceful. This is probably the best interview I’ve seen of NP as he seems the most relaxed and himself

*"Ladies and gentleman, the professor on the drum kit!"*
Peart AND Bozzio on one stage?!! From my two favorite bands: RUSH and Missing Persons!
Rush and Frank Zappa ;)
Funny to link those bands because they are so different and I feel the same way. U.S Drag by MP and any Rush song. Killer
my two favorite drummers along with Ringo
Terry's work with U.K. and Zappa is amazing. Doane with Jethro Tull and Of coarse Neil and Rush were the drummer's "must listen" back in the day. And it still is!
Neil was always so well spoken, his insight into so many subjects was incredible.

Look the mist is rising
And the sun is peaking through
See, the steps grow lighter
As I reach their final few
Hear, the dancing waters
I must be drawing near
Feel, my heart is pounding
With embattled hope and fear
Now, at last I fall before
The Fountain of Lamneth
I thought I would be singing
But I'm tired... out of breath
Many journeys end here
But, the secret's told the same
Life is just a candle
And a dream must give it flame
The key, the end, the answer
Stripped of their disguise
Still it's all confusion
And tears spring to my eyes
Though I've reached a signpost
It's really not the end
Like Old Sol behind the mountain
I'll be coming up again...
I'm in motion
I am still
I am crying
I am still
I'm together
I'm apart
I'm forever
At the start
Still... I am

I hope the Drum Channel never takes this down.
thank you for publishing this and the other round table featuring Neil
I could listen to Neil for hours.
When deciding what to practice I’ve found that playing what worries / scares me is a good way to go 💪🏻
Neil should have been an fm radio announcer. He had an amazing smooth calm voice.
RIP
Neil the Professor.
Incredible mind
Such discipline and kindness and respect , he was never a show off
He earned a spot in heaven for sure
He should be named a saint
A member of another prominent band described him as "intimidatingly intelligent."
My 2 favorite drummers
To see Neil on Terry s set awesome
RIP Neil
Wonderful interaction between everybody on here.
Great stuff!!
and yes, you can see it when Neil is talking about something he's excited about...
he'd simply light right up!
What a true gentleman...and what a lucky thing to have had him around for the while that we did!
I just rediscovered what a master drummer Neil was. My god...he was THAT good! And yes, I have been weeping on and off for a week now at our loss of Neil.
Soul on fire, mind on ice. Neil, “never listen to your brain!”.
Thank you DC for posting this for all of us to see. RIP Professor.
Thank you for posting this!! keep 'em coming We all need healing it's gunna take a while .....
This is fantastic. All three are drumming heroes of mine. RIP Mr. Peart.
That jam at the end was ridiculous. What a treat to hear such creativity from 3 brilliant minds.
Why am I just seeing this now? Such a great, informative conversation. All are so humble.
Thanks for putting this on here..Enjoyed them talking between themselves..Neil Playing Terry's Drums..Priceless..R.I.P. Neil..
Neil is so intelligent. A true scholar.
Great to see these guys have a good and fun discussion, and RIP Neil. Thanks for posting this video.
3 of my MANY drum heroes! God Bless you all! R.I.Percussion Professor!
Im so happy Neil did these..
Now, I keep asking myself when Im unsure of what to do next with... .... anything.. ... I ask myself, “What would Neil do?”
🖤🖤🖤
😥R.I.P. Neil, you will be dearly missed.
This is amazing ! RIP Neil !
Wow, what a great group of Drummers! Three of my favorite guys ever! All incredible people and great great drummers! Thank you for this.
Cool to see NP behind one of TB’s kits.
Whats the name of that song Nigel. in key of Dminor the saddest key of all?
Thank you so much for re-posting this video. Such a wealth of knowledge, experience and wisdom here from 3 incredible drummers. I have concentrated on guitar and songwriting over the past 10 years but the passing of Neil and watching this video is drawing me back to my roots and has me wanting to reconnect with the drumming community. RIP Neil.
I LOVE THESE GUYS....R.I.P. ....THE KING....NEIL PEART !!!!!
This is like watching Neil in a drummers candy shop. I love how he went right into “composer” mode lol Just exploring the next sound one after the other to make it a musical piece, not a “solo” piece. Very cinematic.
fantastic heritage and information. I enjoyed this immensely.
Incredible discussion. So inspirational. Massive thanks for posting this!
As a very poor bass player but a huge music fan, this is one of the best interviews I have ever seen, I found myself smiling through to the end. RIP Neil.
We miss you neil 💔 thank you folks for putting rythumatic poetry out here.....for that was neils heart....the lingo of drums........
Not a drummer, but loved hearing this, being a fan of both Peart and Bozzio. As a "civilian", I learned a lot. Thank you for posting.
This is inspiring! Thanks! & R.I.P. Neil Peart
