Very interesting opening question. Very situational. I just filmed a vlog on the topic of college and I received very mixed feedback from my viewers ( 70% female aged 18-24 ) I can relate to what you said Gary about the feeling of not wanting to let your parents down. I am a solid 100k in debt two years out of University and only after college figured out what I love, what I am good at, and what I am working daily on getting better at to forge into a career. This is some of your best content right here, loved hearing Casey's views, awesome dynamic ***** CaseyNeistat

Thanks for choosing my question for this episode, guys! I was raised as a "default: yes" type of person. Loving and open parents, best in the world. But now I have to consciounsly rearrange my focus. Keeping with my own goals and pursuits gets harder and harder with every passing year when I'm in the mode of constantly trying to help other people with their hustles.
You've given me a great answer, now some serious thinking will occur ;) Stay solid and have an awesome day!

Funny I knew who it was as soon as I saw the thumbnail. Casey does amazing work. Love the first question and the counter ( to go to not to go) I think every kid should spend 2 years traveling, starting a business and meeting as many people as possible ( without the parents around) before EVER stepping foot on a college campus.
You will get a great interpersonal experience and you will find out how hard or fun it it is to run a business. While having the safety net of youth and ignorance- no one has told you what you can't do yet! Great episode.

I've been following Casey since he had 200,000 followers... way before his daily vlogs, which coincidentally (or not), started one month after this very interview. It's crazy how much his channel has grown in only 4 years, which proves what Gary has been preaching for ever; that if you grind hard and put out there great content, it is inevitable that success will come.

Love it! I am becoming more and more of a yes person...why not? Take the chance. Do the thing. And at this point, I think my greatest fear is disappointing myself. I was so concerned with other people for so long and now I know what I'm capable of, but I'm still breaking old habits and boundaries, so I have to stay accountable.

  • @colmoreilly

Greatest fear is the fear of rejection. It's pervasive and the worry that I'll be rejected/ostracised/ridiculed for putting myself out there holds me back. And honestly it's something I struggle with daily.
Yes I need validation from those close to me and those I admire. But I'm working on putting myself out there and taking more and more risks each day.
    Thanks, as always!

QOTD P1: My greatest fear is failing because of fear. I'll be 30 this year and I panic almost everyday that I've wasted the past 12 years of my life talking about what I want to do, but never truly executing to my full potential. I have a great job, but I hate working for someone else. It's a life sucking experience to me. I have so many ideas for things I want to do, but I fear that I'll choose the wrong idea to focus on. I know it sounds pretty stupid, but that is something I deal with internally everyday. My fear is that in 60 years I'll look back and regret not taking more action. QOTD P2: I am a people pleaser, but when I was doing freelance music and video production for a few years full time I got pretty good at saying no. Lol. Great episode guys.

    • @anthonysurrette9428
      @anthonysurrette9428 10 лет назад +6

Part 1 - You never now until you try. 30 is very young. You can fail a few times and still be ok. Take one of the smaller ideas and begin to dive in. I really appreciate you sharing AdamIvy

    • @justinrodriguez9358
      @justinrodriguez9358 10 лет назад +4

As someone who just recently turned 30, let me say I share your fear! Everything is so competitive these days and it's even harder to support yourself. And making a living doing what you love can be even more difficult, which is why most people don't do that. But if you keep at it and work hard you'll know whether it's feasible to make a living at it or not. It may take some time (I started a fingerboard company 8 years ago and am finally now making as much money as I was when I taught high school full-time) but you can accelerate it by working even harder/smarter. That was always my mistake. I get distracted way too much so it takes a while for me to realize some of my visions.

Love this great collab!! I 100% agree with you on the fact that the majority of folks who go to collage just attend it because they think they have to - I observe this phenomenon every day.
#QOTD1: I absolutely fear the fear itself because I hate that feeling and I think that its not some big think that we fear most but the feeling of fear itself.
#QOTD2: most of the time I'm a yes-sayer because I really enjoy to encourage people (but not in a superficial way) and see them suceed but neither do I shy I way from sincerely criticizing someone if asked.

I did go down that rabbit hole, and I'm now back again.
Blown away by Casey's story telling, soooo impressed.
I'm really diving deep into the Askgaryvee show with major catch up now complete. I don't understand why you don't have a hell of a lot more subscribers, but I'm sure you're show still has huge potential as far as that goes. It's around this episode with Casey that I feel you've hit your stride. Keep going chief.
QOTD Casey: It was a tie between fear of failure and what others thought of me....I've recently been lucky enough to shake that burden off and taking business head on. The snowball is starting to build.
QOTD Gary: Somewhere in the middle nowadays, I feel a change happening.
    Watch this space!
    Thanks for everything fellas!

This episode will definitely make the classic reel as it was unique and doubly informative. Thank you for sharing.
#QOTD-C: Greatest fear is finding myself stopping just short of making it.
#QOTD-G: As a parent, I have to be a YES person and a NO person. On the other hand, as a business person, I am more NO than YES. It took a while to get here but now that I can say NO more often than before and things are getting better.

Dave Guerra I like this answer it resonates a lot with my feelings on the matter. I am becoming much better at saying No to working with just anyone especially in Sales. Even if the "No" is part of "No"t Yet I am differing people or opportunities then focusing on the Best opportunity allowing me to go deep instead of spreading myself too wide.. I believe the payoff will be greater and longer lived with this approach.

Hii Gary, I'm 21 years old college student, Both you and casey my biggest inspiration.
My Greatest Fear :- Is to not fully live my life in the way that i wanted, I don't wanna die knowing that there's something i missing it, Basically i don't wanna grow old full with regrets, My biggest fear is that i'm wasting my life and my time here.
So naturally i'm more of a YES person in general, since i wanna try everything, experience everything.

This new format of bringing guests is very interesting. We get to know these people up and close while they get to taste Vaynernation a bit.
QOTD-G: I am a bit of YES person by default. I am learning to say NO to distractions and I am doing really well, I think.
QOTD-C: My biggest fear is burning out at a moment when I am most required not to. I am a hustler and want to hustle 365 days a year.

QOTD #1: My greatest fear is not being able to care for my family for some reason. For whatever reason, that's just totally unacceptable for me. I figure it's the main reason I'm here on this rock.
QTOD#2: Definitely a yes person... I've been working on it, because it sometimes gets in the way of other things (like making a living). But I also struggle with it, because I've always been an advocate of "pay it forward", and a lot of people have helped me over the years.

Such a great show! I wasn't familiar with Casey before but I'm excited to check out his stuff now for sure :)
I'm a no person probably more this past year than before. I just started being really honest with myself and while I still try to be tactful and nice, I have been working to do things based on my preferences instead of others' expectations. I don't think I have a greatest fear. Even if I'm afraid of something, it doesn't overwhelm me because I know whatever I face, God will help me through it :)

  • @DrewPaulBell

QOTD #1: My 2nd Rule of Life is, "doing something is always better than not doing something." My 3rd rule is, "now is always better than later." Of course you have to say "no," to somethings because you have to CHOOSE. But I think I've gotten a lot more opportunities to choose from the more I've said "yes."
QOTD #2: My biggest fear is that I would end up back to the town I grew up in, Warner Robins, GA. It was so boring that I've worked my ass off to make sure I never have to move back there. I'm in Atlanta for now, but I still have my eye on the prize: New York City.

I enjoyed this episode - great having Casey on "bring Casey back". Bionic ears sound good to me. It is difficult to say no to customers, i've tried doing this recently and it has worked well as my customers appreciate that i am keeping it real. Not been able to do a job straight away then I let them know "I'm gona be a while before doing it" and that is working for me, less pressure for me and a better job than rushing it.

If you watched #dailyvee 196, while he is with the Cowboys he tells them to not make the mistake of misunderstanding how young people communicate and rather leverage it. #QOTD YES person for sure. I'm really trying to tackle it everyday tho, but since I'm so young and the things I say Yes to so often requires very little effort compared to what it turns out to mean for the person I for example did a small favour for. I believe you have to find a very rough balance between the two if you're finding it hard to say no, or yes for that matter.

First, as you know, Gary, I'm loving the show and learning so much from you simply by listening and putting to practice, so thanks. I really loved Cadey's answer to Joe's college question. Two quick stories:
When I first got to NJCU back in '96, I majored in art -- for the first semester. I was pretty decent at drawing and painting all through high school, but once I started taking four-hour long courses in art theory, shading, and all that, and I was getting Cs, I said this isn't for me. I then figured I'd do something related to writing, since that was also what I was good at, and I took journalism course, and while the act of writing was enjoyable, I didn't care for the content I was writing. It wasn't creative enough. Then, by the close of my sophomore year, the English Department announced a creative writing degree, and after my first course, I knew this was what I was meant to do. I'd never have figured that out if it wasn't for college.
Flash forward to circa 2010. I was teaching a course at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and I noticed this one student kept coming in late to class everyday, and sometimes wouldn't show up. Finally, I asked him in front of the class, "why do you keep coming to my class late?" and he answered "I'm so sorry, Professor Trigonis, but my band had a show last night, and I didn't get home until really late." I was intrigued. "Does your band play every night at a venue?" I asked. "Pretty much," was his reply. "How many folks come out to see you guys play?" I continued, and he said that he can get anywhere between fifty and a hundred people each show to see his band perform.
I finally said to him, "Do you love playing? Is this what you really want to do?" and without skipping a beat, he said yes. "Then why are you in school? You should be focusing on what you love to do and are obviously good at."
I never saw him in my class for the rest of the semester.
The education system is definitely ... something ... (I'm being nice here -- I spent over ten years teaching, and the only thing that got me through was knowing that I had my students' best interests in mind, and the loan industry is definitely a "racket") but depending on the person, it can be the thing that sets you on the right path when you don't know what that path is just yet.

I’m a default “no” type of person, life wasn’t great but my single-parent late mother managed to raised me and 3 of my sisters. We had everything that we need but i think life kind of moulded us into default “no”, to protect ourselves in a way.
Casey’s question: my biggest fear is to lose another family member or a loved one because I lost the person dearest to me last April, my mum. Apart from barely getting by and all, I still value relationships more than anything.

Lurker coming out. I listened to episodes 1-69 via Podcast on my last couple road trips so thanks Gary for the Podcast shoutouts. I read JJJRH, etc. :)
QOTD: I was born as a yes person, and I have a very hard time saying no. To new opportities, YES.. but we are very much in the YES stage with our blog at the moment.
Biggest fear would have to be becoming too grown up, too fast. I'm a young guy and I would like to learn how to mature and learn but never lose the youthful mind.

  • @victoriaj4272

QOTD, Casey-- My greatest fear is not being loved and in turn it prevents me from allowing myself to be vulnerable sometimes. Why, because I experienced not being loved growing up.
I set an intention everyday to love and be loving. I don't want anyone to experience what it feels like to be ignored, invisible, invalidated, neglected or like they don't matter. I don't expect it back from the people I give to. I believe in a universal reciprocity. I believe I will get it back even if it's not from the person I give it to because that's just how the energy of love works. It can't be contained to just a select few. Sidenote: My son has been my biggest mentor. Wanna know how to love? Model children.
QOTD, Gary-- By default I'm a yes person. I am still going through the learning curve that Casey mentioned.
This episode by far is my favorite for the following reasons:
    1) Bringing on a guest shifted the energy of the show. It added more flavor which in turn added more depth. Choosing Casey was a huge win because he brought a fresh, well thought out perspective to the questions. I deem this episode the ZEN episode. The answers had an eastern philosophy feel to them. There is no right or wrong way, only the middle way.
    2) "Fun fact" I am heavily into personality types and I am convinced that Gary V is an ENFJ or a ENSJ (Myers Briggs). I'm INFJ so everything that was discussed resonated.
    3) I think often when speaking on business development and success, personal development is not factored into the discussion. I think a strong sense of self and how to leverage those aspects of self are vital and critical to being successful AND loving what you do.
    4) I like where the episode was filmed. It's the third personality in the episode. lol

QOTD: My biggest fear is matching the speed of owning my business/keep pace with the frequency of excecuting to grow it and not spending enough with my family. I am a mom of 3. I believe it is so important as a mom to spend as much time as I can with my children especially since they are girls. So i fear that moment that I wasn't "THERE" and even more so if I do not realize it until it is too late. It's a constant battle I face on a daily.

Great reality check about college on this episode. College definitely can be a great place to get to know yourself, meet great people and figure out a general direction for where you want to go. But that piece of paper doesn't guarantee you one ounce of success, that's for sure.
#QOTD, Gary- I'm definitely a yes person, although my yes can be a little slow.
#QOTD, Casey- This was a harder question to answer. My biggest source of anxiety is not fulfilling my potential. It has held me back from starting things that I should've began.
    Enjoyed the show!

One point on the first question. I am a ex pro hockey player 10 years and a disabled adult since 2012 have pins in leg back and neck. I went back to school in 2012 got marketing degree. Own 3 companies and major business is social media marketing. A huge point that wad not covered is my first year of school was taught accounting. Finance. Human resource. Computer applications. Graphic design. These are all basics that you would need to run a business. If anything you should go to school to learn that. Yes its not the dream job but a must for making money if you are a small business owner. Last time I check money is needed to live.

#QOTD, GARY --> I default to Yes, but have learned how to say No much more over the past 7 years. The army taught me a lot about saying no (ironically). If you say yes to everything there then you get trampled. I recently had to say no to someone I've said yes to my entire life. That was very difficult. I'm still working to rectify the relationship. My answer is still no, but at least we have a phone call scheduled to hash out the hard feelings.

I try to say yes to myself. I am at a Moment in my life in which I am learning to say yes to my world and no to the Rest of the world. And Even when I want to enjoy Time with Family, Friends or new people whatever I do, I want it to be something that teaches me: because is the way I invest my time, and at the Same Time Challenges me because is what helps me to grow and be my better Version.
I have fun when listening other People experiences and try to learn from them as well, in those cases I love to see People trust me.

Greatest irrational fear: Falling up marble stairs and knocking out my front teeth. Must have seen it happen to someone as a child. I am a YES person. The interaction between GV and CN was interesting, a different vibe. Not my favorite episode because the audience felt "left out" of the jokes. We needed questions that were directed to a visual story teller like Casey, India. Oh, LOVE the revelation about your bionic hearing, GV. You keep answering...I'll keep providing feedback. Although if it's scathing, I'll keep sending it via email. You've been FANTASTIC about replying and showing gratitude.

#QOTD: Needles, man. Fucking needles. No idea why; I've been terrified of them my whole life. When I was ~4yrs old, it would take 5 adults to get a needle in me - 1 adult holding down each limb, and a 5th to do the stickin'. Now I don't need to be restrained, I just pretty much avoid doctor's offices. When I get a shot, I pass out about 75% of the time, and when they draw my blood, I pass out 100% of the time. I can pass out just from thinking about needles (google "vasovagal nervous response" if you're curious), or from talking about them like I am n-

Great questions Casey. I really don't want to answer them, which mean I have to :)
Biggest fear: That I will seek pity for myself over inspiring others
Why: When I was 17 I was life flighted to the hospital because of internal bleeding. My parents were crying and everyone was worried about me, I enjoyed that attention too much. I have worked to this point to get the opposite and inspire but I still fight the wolf regularly.

Thank you Gary for talking about Yes person vs No person! Omg I've been struggling with this issue. By nature I am a default YES person, and have been taken by so many leeches who give nothing in return. Not even a thank you. I just love helping people. And, you are so right that it's a steep learning curve. I'm in the early stages of my company startup, and it's not like I am cash rich. So the time of my team is very valuable. Maybe you can address the topic of default YES as an early stage entrepreneur vs. someone like you making the big bucks. Obviously I think that it would be easier to handle the leeches who give nothing back when you're making bank. Such a fascinating topic.

I default to "yes" but I do hate when I continually give to a person and they only have a single gear: take...not having expectation on the flip end takes practice and patience....#QOTD: Greatest fear is getting old and looking back in regret for not relentlessly pursuing my dreams.
