    Hey Steve, after you guys mentioned the Screamin Eagle option on the ESP, I double checked mine and sure enough it's not checked. If I were to install a torque cam and SE tuner would the warranty implications be that the failure wouldn't be covered at all or just that the cost of the SE part (say it was a bad cam that then did other internal damage) wouldn't be covered?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад +5

      Good question. The cam would have a 1 year (parts only) warranty that wouldn’t cover other parts in the bike or labor. If you want to be covered you do have the option of cancelling your warranty (receive a prorated refund applied to your loan balance) then buy a new warranty with the SE coverage. If you’re still under your first two years of ownership the warranty is considered “extended eligibility” and is only slightly more expensive than if you bought it when the bike was brand new. If you’re outside your 2 year manufacturers warranty than it becomes an “anytime warranty” and costs more. If you do this make sure you purchase the coverage BEFORE you install the parts. Also make sure the parts are installed at a dealership who RECORDS THE PARTS ON YOUR SWR (sales warranty registration).

    Glad I don’t live in Cali but will say Matt and his dealership seem absolutely top notch! My 07 RKC I bought new when I came back from the sandbox (OIF). 100k+ later and not many HD parts in motor any longer but it still checks all the boxes without the dealer involvement. Dyno done, cams, new cases and DD7 etc etc but it’s all mine, no MoCo to be involved. Ride safe.

    Yeah I’ve done big radius exhausts on my Breakout previously. The bike looked amazing and sounded awesome! But the sound on the highway drove me crazy. These days I ride a RG and have Jekill & Hyde slip ons and silence the pipes on longer runs when my head starts buzzin. One of the advantages of J&H is that even though I’m upgrading to a 131 Stage 3, I’ll still be able to manage the sound even with better performance. Nice vlog guys 👍

    Felt Heat is another very important reason not listed in the video that would definitely have me lean towards full exhausts and I live in CA. I wear earplugs and I can definitely tone down the sound (smaller diameter pipes), etc. 100 degree + weather is tough to ride in period, but 100 degree + weather with your right leg cooking from the engine heat is the worst thing ever for me.

    As an experienced long time Rider(45 years)...My advice if you care about your warranty?....Just put a pair of the cheapest Slipons...Cobra 909's or Neighborhaters or simliar....For 2years and after....Put whatever you want( perferrably Aftermarket Full exhaust...Tune...and maybe a cam...)...And you will have no problems..👍😎

    Nice awesome job guys on letting us know the real legal way to put different stuff on your bike and still be with in the factory warranty!! You guys need to keep doing videos like this because it keeps us HD riders in check on what you can do to your bike..Like you guys said most dealerships will sell you stuff and you think that what some of the guys at the dealership tells you is believable untill your bike breaks down and you find out the hardway that it's not covered under your extended warranty that you have paid alot of $$$$ for to keep your HD bike on the road for many many years and miles...Wish there were more guys like you guys from your local dealerships that really really care about there customers and making them happy and want them to come back for services offered by the dealerships!!😊😁🤔😎💯👍🤝

    From articles I have read, my understanding is, you can install whatever part you want by whoever and not void your warranty. Only if that particular part is negatively associated with problems is when you are out of luck. Harley has been "corrected" by Federal law that you do not need to be bound by Harley parts under warranty.

      Exactly

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад +2

      This is true. (Magnuson-moss Act) However you increase your chances of warranty claims being denied when your engine is running outside of HDs specs that have been tested by them (aftermarket tuner). The likelihood of this being detected is higher through the assistance of digital technicians. In this video our goal was to explain the most common occurrences of “particular parts negatively associated with problems” as they relate to exhaust upgrades. Also, they best way to avoid particular parts being negatively associated with after market parts.

    I have an 18 Heritage 114 with slip-ons that I bought used from the dealer. It has the Screaming Eagle tuner on it and came with the full warrantee. I love the power with the low down torque. If I want something with high end power I will ride one of my other bikes built for that. I don't think I would like my Harley if it was built for max power because of how I ride and the stock power delivers a lot more smiles. If I ever buy a touring model I don't even know if I would add slip-ons. I feel like it would get old over a long ride.

    I was hoping you’d talk about the wide band sensors and whatnot can help with. I’m considering an S&S carb 2/1. I have a 2019 RG Spec. Currently running a stage 2 torque cam SE tuned at dealer and an open header with KhromeWerks muffs..insert installed to compensate for reverb/backpressure. I can’t stand the heat on stock header but I do understand the cat is further back in the S&S and has the larger 18 mm O2 sensors etc. I do believe we can still get stage 3 work at Cali dealers right?

    A Harley dealer told me that Road Glide Special and Street Glide Special or the 114cu engine already has a high flow air cleaner that can be swapped out for a screaming eagle air cleaner without the tune since the 114 already has a stage 1 tune. 26:40 Do you agree with that?

    At video. My question is about the twin cam. I have a Fatboy S that was stock. I put a pair of slip on on it. Do I need to tune it? Hey guys, I have a 2019 softail slim. I bought it used, so no concern for warranty, I live in Oregon, takes care of the California thing. Shortly after I got it, I wanted to make it a little louder, as people still have a hard time seeing me even though I wear a bright white full-face helmet and a bright orange vest when I ride. After doing a little research on RUclips I decided to go with Vance and Hines 2 into 2 big radius, Vance and Hines A02 air intake and a FP-4 tuner. My question is, how much, if any legal hassle could I be subjected to traveling in and through California? BTW You're the reason I choose the Softail Slim thanks I absolutely love the bike.

    I just bought a 23 FXLRS. I do not live in CA. From what I understand the catalyst is in the mufflers not the head pipe. If I add slip on's that do not have a catalyst am I voiding my warranty? For clarification I was looking at the S&S Grand National race mufflers. No cat's.
    It's also my understanding that if I want the motor to run properly as far as air/fuel ratio it's best to add a tuner or have it tuned. This must be done with the Screaming Eagle tuner if I want to retain my factory warranty.

    @mattlaidlaw Matt, interested in your take on an “after cat” modification. For instance I have a ‘23 CVO RG. I know of a company that offers a service to pull out the “restrictor” from the stock pipe. Would that affect warranty? Performance issues? My gut says this would be similar in both warranty and performance like swapping just slip on mufflers. What do you think? I would go this route mainly because I have the dark platinum paint and the smoked chrome and want to keep that look. The bike is a CA bike.

    All new tuners are EPA compliant and Harley now does not void your warranty. They no longer have the Fuel pack 3 tuner. They went to the fuel pack 4. Fuel pack Dyno Jet and the others are all equal under Harleys rule.

    Have things changed? In 2011 I bought a new Road King and did the stage one, no mention of a tuner however the shop did do some ECM tuning after they installed the mufflers and air cleaner. Do you have to buy the tuner now?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад +2

      Things have changed. Since the Milwaukee Eight engines came out there is a now a physical tuner that is used to tune the bike (shown in video). The tuner does not stay on the bike but does get “married” to the bike so it can only be used on that one vin. Before the M8 there was just a download a dealer did.

    Can you cover installing your own parts? Screamin Eagle parts come with instructions, if you install an SE cam yourself for example you’re still under warranty right?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад

      This is a good question. So you get a 1 year parts warranty when you buy parts. It covers the parts only.
      For a part, like a cam that can be covered under ESP - Screamin eagle coverage to be covered, it needs to be installed at a dealership. I think partly because they want to ensure it was done by someone who is a certified technician and secondly the work order needs to be recorded in the motorcycles warranty and registration form.

    if you live in OR and buy a bike in OR you can still do road trips down CA right? to be clear you can in fact register your OR bike in CA after some conditions are met? lets say id like to do some road trips up and down the west coast and might want to move back to CA or have that option

    • @MattLaidlaw

      Yea you can ride in CA with any bike that’s out of state. You just can’t register a motorcycle in CA that wasn’t shipped from the factory with the proper emissions equipment that makes it CA compliant. Until it has 7,500 miles on it. Then you can register it.

      They might be right. I’m not entirely sure. Every pipe runs a little different. My guess is that it will run okay to good. But I would assume it won’t run 100% as good as it could without a tailored tune for that pipe.

    What are your thoughts on a Reinhardt slimline duals exhaust from headers back with 4.5” mufflers and a Harley screaming eagle pro street tuner… on my 2022 street glide st…I like the copper accents that compliment the scheme of my bike…it seems to be compliant with warranty…but what about back pressure issues that I have read many things about and not sure what to believe about hurting my engine…can you elaborate on this? Your input would be greatly appreciated…wanting to enhance looks, sound and performance…would this combo do all three? I would have my local dealer Mike’s Famous Harley Davidson do the work as they have been doing a great job on past bikes I have purchased with them and are a great asset….love all of your posts by the way 👍

      Typically, your bike must have at least 7500 miles if you’re bringing it in from out of state, unless it’s a 50 state bike. (CARB sticker on frame). There are a few other exceptions, like if you’re moving to California, or you’re in the military.

    I tried to stay with the SE BCI tuner. First time out trying to auto tune, it bricked my ECM and forced me to tow it to a dealer. They were able to recover my ECM. I immediately removed the crap SE tuner, and went full aftermarket. WOODS 22XE, 5.5 injectors, S&S intake, Trask AC, D&D billet cat exhaust. I’ve put 5,000 miles with zero issues. It’s only my experience but aftermarket parts far outperform Harley SE parts.
    And the warranty? Buy a factory manual, learn how to repair your own machine if you want to play. Pay to play….

      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад +1

      Any SE air cleaner will work. You’re mostly buying the style when choosing between the SE air cleaners. Some of the heavy breathers that are a “snorkel” style are a little better performance wise from our experience but it’s a nominal difference.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 месяцев назад +2

      Fueling and trask make good stuff but to say SE parts are junk is just bad Info. I never really understood this argument. You realize SE parts are designed by the same company that made the bikes right? So are the motorcycles junk too? If so why are you riding it? The SE products have more testing and R&D behind them than any aftermarket parts out there. The only argument that could be made is that SE can be less potent because they follow regulations that some of the other guys don’t feel the need to and operate under less strenuous parameters to ensure better longevity.

    • @michaelthompson7001

      You’d have to remove the power vision to install the SE tuner. Are you thinking about doing that to preserve your warranty? If so, just know that it’s possible your VIN is already flagged and installing a SE tuner won’t reserve the status. So you’d be wasting your money in that circumstance

    Then I think a law came out, forget what it’s called, but they have to be able to prove the failure was a result of the aftermarket mod to deny the claim. I can see some wanting to go ahead and take the chance saying as you can spend 3-5k in the aftermarket and get the same numbers as that new crate 135 which will probably be over 10k installed. As you say, the trade off there is warranty! I’m lucky to be in Iowa where we can do pretty much whatever we want to them.

    Watched a RUclips video from Mastertech Miller. He replaced a Screaming Eagle breather on a 2023 CVO Road Glide and picked up 10 Hp without tuner, without exhaust. So, I decided to replace the breather on my 2023 CVO Road Glide. When my dealer heard what I was planning, they told me not to bother unless I added a tuner and an exhaust and did a Stage 1 upgrade. So, I am adding an SE tuner and a Khromewerks exhaust. My goal is additional performance, not noise. Does this make sense?

      I’ll be honest, we have not done any air filter mods like this on the new 2023 CVOs with the VVT. This guy seems credible being from a dealer. I’m confused though. It sounds like he got 2 HP. Or did I hear him wrong? Personally I think if all your after is performance you won’t get very much bang for your buck with this upgrade. If you want to get rid of the big Intake for the better looking air cleaner and more sound with a different style pipe - than I think it’s money well spent.
