We all know they’ll blame the aftermarket part for any issue that comes up. Let’s agree on that right away.

This has been the norm across the entire automotive industry since the Magnuson moss warranty act. They have to prove the aftermarket part caused the failure. If they fail to prove that, and deny the claim, take them to court. Their warranty, as it reads now, is standard and follows the act.

The Magnuson Moss act is what got HD in trouble with their warranty policies. The Magnuson Moss act also says that if your warranty is denied because of an aftermarket part or third party service the warranty company, in this case Harley Davidson, has to prove it. So if you have an aftermarket tuner and your engine locks up they can't just say "the tuner ran lean overheated your engine and locked it up", HD has to prove that claim. A failed oil pump can also cause an engine to overheat and lock up and that has nothing to do with the tuner.

Big news and about time. My local custom shop is on it. Going stage 1, Bassani slip ons, breather and aftermarket tune for a year until my 24 road glide gets thru break in. But, to be fair to Harley, how do they know the defect was cause by their manufacturing or someone else.

Basically anything that violates the CA clean air dept or EPA restrictions they can void it.

Yup, it sucks but it is what it is.
Had a mechanic try to convince me that you can put a powervision tuner on and they can't void the warranty legally because of the FTC, I'm like dude Harley has to abide to EPA laws and there's no way Harley is going to cover anything other than a harley tuner.
      To much bullshit out there.

Any situation like this is gonna be a case by case deal, no two will be the same, Some dealers will do more for their customers, some don't. Also dealer input and dealer relations with factory rep has a large bearing on final outcome if it's a judgement call. This is across all brands of bikes. Some dealers will overlook something like a trailer hitch and some will use it to the fullest extent possible.

I'm glad to see Harley-Davidson cooperating with the FTC. I don't believe that this issue was as bad as the FTC was making out; frankly speaking, I can see the problem of using out of spec tuners (or bad tuners), or having someone other than HD doing "first service" at that 1000 mile maker. To honor the warranty, for instance, I can see HD wanting to make sure that the correct oil is used, and that the 200 pt inspection is complete on "first service". The other thing that causes problems is after market "stages" (pipes and air intake, etc) that can f up the tuning and operation of the power plant. Why should HD have to honor a warranty where the user fd up the power plant with after market pipes and stages?
At any rate, the reworded warranty will get the FTC off the back of HD, and will hopefully put this issue to bed.

So can we change out the head pipe now in addition to slip-on mufflers?

the part about giving you parts for free means that if they are offering say oil change for free and they supply the oil and filter at no cost but you instead take your bike to some shop and you use an aftermarket oil filter and whatever kind of oil that isn't Harley oil then since they was giving you that stuff for free but you used another brand then they can void the warranty

A lot of talk about this but I’m waiting to hear from actual riders that do their own stage 1 or put on a different header and so on and what is their experience at the dealership after that? Are dealers still denying warranty claims? What are they now allowing that was previously denied under warranty? With thousands of bikes under warranty and being modified in various ways, we should hear some hard facts on this soon.

Most Harley dealerships actually sell aftermarket parts, so none that I know of have ever voided a warranty simply due to the existence of the part. If the part is deemed to be the cause or a contributing factor to the problem, then they can still void the warranty. This is no other vehicle manufacturer in existence that doesn’t take the exact same position.

Even if you put the original parts back on, it wouldn’t matter. You can tell it’s been modified and returned to stock by hooking up to the ECM.

HD wouldn't hook it up to their system cause my V&H short shots would void the warranty on an electrical issue. Now I ride around after warranty over w an engine check light...

I’ll save you the breath. It’s hard enough to get HD to cover HD parts and accessories. Dealers are shit.
Now, you add aftermarket accessories? It’s their words against ours. This didn’t change anything in my honest opinion. I’ve had nothing but negative interactions with HD dealers

Quick question then. I have a lifetime battery warranty when i purchased my harley a few years back and never had to change the battery since it was my main commuter for literally everything. Recently though i bought a car and left the battery on a trickle charger during this past winter. I reinstalled the battery but got it wouldnt crank. Tried to pop the clutch on it and still nothing. I went down to my local autozone and picked up a new battery and installed it. Everythings running fine but my question is, if i had to replace this autozone battery (bc everyone and their mother told me autozone batteries suck) will my warranty for a new battery be void with harley's lifetime battery warranty?
TL:DR I fucked up and forgot i had a lifetime battery warranty with harley and bought a new battery from autozone. Is my lifetime warranty now void since its not a harley battery?

Don’t care about the warranty. If the damn thing breaks I’m replacing the junk with solid aftermarket parts anyway.
