That's a really good point; Nintendo, historically stubborn, kept riding with the NES for awhile (although "Super Mario Bros. 3" was quite the event & I think still a great game). It probably cost them some customers, but it made for a heck of a 1990's rivalry. I think, in the end, gamers were the winner in this situation due to the competition, which led to competitive prices & some great software for both companies.
In some ways, the Genesis was better than the SNES. Most SNES games ran at a lower resolution than most Genesis games, the Genesis could handle bigger sprites, the sound chip could produce more bassy sounds than the SNES could do. Which is quite good considering the SNES came out two years after the Genesis. The SNES beats it in a lot of other departments though, it could handle more colors, it had mode 7, but still.
I wish they could get away with saying it, but... I guess Sega needs those sweet Switch sales. Oh, and it's apparently illegal to directly attack competitors in advertising these days. Oh well.

Nintendo does accept fan game projects, they've only taken down and DMCA'd around 15-50, but the only reason those were taken down were because they either took away money from the company, interfered with what they were doing or because the were inappropriate, disturbing, sexual, (etc.)

I am 41 years old. I was cleaning out my very nasty and filthy garage this week. As I lifted up water-soaked carboard boxes, waved away mosquitos, and swept up the dust from the garage floor, I noticed a thick black suitcase. I was going to throw it out but there was something inside of it and so I opened it up to find me ORIGINAL Sega Genesis, with controllers, transformers, and control pads at the bottom of the case! Only 2 words came slowly out of my mouth as a smile spread across my face …."NO...WAY!" This song has been stuck in my head all this week after making that find.

I am mostly an SNES fan (although I do play a bit of Genesis as well), and I love this commercial. It is _undeniably_ catchy and memorable, no matter which console that you prefer.
What I love so much about Sega and Nintendo was their different approaches to what they were going to deliver back then. I consider Sega the kings of arcade style gaming to this day. Nintendo was more adept at adventure games and turn-based strategy. Sometimes RPG but their loss of Squaresoft is a sad story to me as is the current state of SE. Shit's change man.

No, I am fine with home consoles, I just hate how expensive they are with considerably less power from cheaper PC's and worse controls that PC generally (keyboard and mouse > controller in most situations). I also hate that online costs money for home consoles (although at least PS+ gives free games), they have minimal if any modding capabilities, and how closed game codes are. It's like paying more to be limited with the current models. Also, the current Gen 8 home console exclusives are a joke. The only one out now worth mentioning is Mario. None of the other exclusives that are out now look good at all.
What a great time to be a kid. I have such great memories from the exact time period when the Genesis came out. This commercial was so good. The NES seemed archaic compared to the Genesis. Also, Buster Douglas beating Tyson was such a big deal at my school (I know the game was lousy, but we all wanted to play it). I remember all of this like it was yesterday - but it’s 30+ years ago! Time flies.
Genesis Does: Works with their fans and doesn't get mad at people emulating their games unlike Nintendo who sues their fans who want to play their old games and blocks them behind a paywall.

sega: Makes games so bad that they have to hire fans to make a half decent one
I am mostly an SNES fan (although I do play a bit of Genesis as well), and I love this commercial.
It is _undeniably_ catchy and memorable, no matter which console that you prefer.

What I love so much about Sega and Nintendo was their different approaches to what they were going to deliver back then. I consider Sega the kings of arcade style gaming to this day. Nintendo was more adept at adventure games and turn-based strategy. Sometimes RPG but their loss of Squaresoft is a sad story to me as is the current state of SE. Shit's change man.
Genesis supports it's fans, what Nintendon't. :P

***** Again, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. I'm fully aware of the middle finger that Nintendo has been giving to their fans by shutting down fan projects like AM2R and Pokemon Uranium. They'll probably shut down Mother 4 as well despite the fact that Shigesato Itoi himself gave it his blessing...
However, you can't act like Sega has always respected their fans. Sure, they're putting the most effort into doing so now since Sonic Generations back in 2011 with Sonic Mania and Project 2017, but need I remind you that the only part of their fanbase that they have been putting *any* effort into pleasing these days is the *Sonic* fanbase.
All of their *other* classic IP's (Out Run, After Burner, NiGHTS, Daytona USA, Crazy Taxi, Ristar, Streets of Rage, Virtua Fighter, etc.), they are acting like they *don't even exist!* (The last time Sega gave them *any* sort of recognition in a game that wasn't an updated rerelease was back in *2012* with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed!)
Hell, they're so ignorant of their non-Sonic IP's these days that Yu Suzuki had to get help from Kickstarter and *Sony* of all companies to make Shenmue 3!
Like I'm goign to bother reading all of that on RUclips.

Now I know why SEGA now resonates with me so much. The music, presentation and visuals all share that same "rebellious" spirit seen in the 90s. I may not have played their games, but at least their music is a bop.

when the Mega drive was announced in japan, nintendo came in and overshadowed it by launching SMB3 a week prior. then when it was starting to gain traction in 1990, yamauchi told the press that the super famicom was only half a year away, killing most of the mega drive's momentum.
at least the PC engine/turbographics 16 has 3 years by then and had the install base...

All the consoles have the same games now though, and all of them are the same version, except some run smoother, faster, and look better on other systems (namely PC).
Johnknight1 Unfortunately console exclusives are still alive and well, so PC people and people who only buy one console neccesarily have to miss out on some games.
No, I am fine with home consoles, I just hate how expensive they are with considerably less power from cheaper PC's and worse controls that PC generally (keyboard and mouse > controller in most situations).
I also hate that online costs money for home consoles (although at least PS+ gives free games), they have minimal if any modding capabilities, and how closed game codes are.
It's like paying more to be limited with the current models.
Also, the current Gen 8 home console exclusives are a joke. The only one out now worth mentioning is Mario. None of the other exclusives that are out now look good at all.

What a great time to be a kid. I have such great memories from the exact time period when the Genesis came out. This commercial was so good. The NES seemed archaic compared to the Genesis. Also, Buster Douglas beating Tyson was such a big deal at my school (I know the game was lousy, but we all wanted to play it). I remember all of this like it was yesterday - but it’s 30+ years ago! Time flies.

Genesis Does: Works with their fans and doesn't get mad at people emulating their games unlike Nintendo who sues their fans who want to play their old games and blocks them behind a paywall.
If Sega still made consoles and made their equivalent to Smash, they would embrace the fact that fans would mod the game and add online multiplayer. But Nintendo on the other hand would shut down the servers and piss off their fans. And take them to court. Shameless
