    Narrow milkweed is the key!

Kevin, UCSD has an ecological park on the northside of campus that attract monarchs in the winter. Both sites seem to be dominated by eucalyptus, a non-native. What pattern would the monarchs have followed before inthe introduction of these Australian genetics? Were milkweed groves plentiful enough then to sustain these butterflies?

For food as the larvae, yes. At least more so. I know they used cypress and I'm not sure what others trees they would overwinter in.
