Test drove one on March 2 from Doncaster
Enjoyed it actually (didn’t think I would!)
My husband prefers it over my Model 3: but that’s due it looking like a ‘regular car’ and loved the maps display behind the steering wheel.
For the price I think Tesla is better value at this stage but the Polestar 2 is definitely worth considering.

I test drove the single motor FWD back in January. Unfortunately limited to the Eastern Suburbs and a predefined route. Things that stood out to me. It felt a bit cumbersome but would love to have taken it out on the highway as I think that’s where it would shine. The rear door entry wwas quite small and I tested that when someone who’d been over 6ft had been in the driver’s seat and it was really cramped. Loved the hatchback and the cabin. Regen was very strong (because it’s a FWD. I found FWD to be a weird choice for an EV but I guess it is built on the XC40 platform). I ended up going for the Model 3 RWD - by the time you option up the Polestar 2 to the same level it’s $9000 more expensive. But that was more when I test drove it as I noticed they’ve downgrade the $6K Pilot pack to a $3.5K pilot lite pack. I might have gone that way if I’d known. Model 3 due in May/June

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m hoping Polestar will allow me to test it on the highway sometime later this year. Like yourself if I were to order one I’d also want the Pilot and Plus packs 👍

@@LudicrousFeed Good luck with Polestar on the long term test. 20 mins is nowhere near long enough for a test drive (mine was more like 30 mins). I guess my only other minor disappointment was the exterior paint colours which I dubbed 50 shades of corporate boring. It looked great in black but having had a black car in Australia, I’d never have one again so I guess it would be the white. That’s another $1400, so we’re up to just over $76K. I notice they’re blaming the semi conductor shortage for the change to the pilot back - the pixel led headlights and foglights are gone (both corner with the vehicle). My opinion on the Model 3 RWD is it’s still the best value for money EV in Australia but the waiting list has blown out to 5-7months. Polestar is August so about the same. Atto 3 looks like it fills a nice niche until the new MGZS EV comes out.

    • @LudicrousFeed

It’s called ‘phantom drain’ and is a known phenomenon with EVs like Tesla that allow for many background processes like battery management, sentry mode etc
It is very weather dependent - at either extremes (especially cold) you can expect quite a drop as the battery tries to keep it at an ideal temp

I test drove a Model 3 RWD last year, ordered one in December, and then test-drove a Polestar 2 last month. The Polestar was smooth, but just wasn't fun; acceleration was noticeably less punchy. The interior felt like a regular car while the Tesla felt like a spaceship. Once you factor in the extra packs needed to get an Autopilot equivalent, I don't think the Polestar is nearly as good value. Pleased to see more EVs coming to market but I think Tesla still have the best options so far.

I rented a Model 3 and it's just so different. Polestar has Volvo qualities but is much sportier. Both are sporty but Tesla is more obviously sporty, more tech based, very efficient, has the Tesla supercharger network, has good things like sentry mode and dog mode. When you push the Polestar you find that it is sporty but it doesn't necessarily feel as obviously sporty right away. Cars are for different types of buyers.

Thanks for the review Tom...hopefully you'll get an opportunity for a longer, detailed review as you mentioned. One thing I noticed, in your rear seat review it seemed to have a "transmission" tunnel in the middle rather than the much better flat floor like my model 3. I'm not sure why any EV would choose to add the tunnel if it's not necessary.

Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) is a global mid-size unibody automobile platform, jointly developed by Volvo and Geely under their China Euro Vehicle Technology AB (CEVT) R&D banner. It has to support both ICE and EV designs - hence the transmission tunnel. I’m told batteries this space houses batteries in the Polestar 2. I test drove a P2LR + Pilot Pack in NZ about 6 weeks ago. I had a M3 on order since early Jan and wanted a comparison. The P2 drove well but felt heavier on the road than the M3. To get the safety and comfort features that come standard on the Tesla you have to add the Pilot and Plus Packs, an extra $NZ9500.
The P2’s layout is more ‘conventional’ which may appeal to some. I did like having a driver’s display in front of me, but Polestar didn’t make the most of the available display space with only limited configurability. It also lacked a HUD (as does the M3).
It is a repackaged ICE in my view. It still has a transmission tunnel and to open the frunk there is a manual “bonnet” lever down by the driver’s knee. No ability to open from outside the vehicle.
I could go on about what I found during the drive, but I was impressed enough the put a refundable deposit down to secure one in the first shipment. Subsequently after weighing up this vs the M3 on order I cancelled the P2 and got refunded. My Model 3 arrives next week.
By the way, the Polestar App is awful.

Adaptive CC is an extra $3.4k, and the pack with the Panoramic roof, heatpump, wireless charging, heated seats is $6,000. And there's more, I though if you purchase the 6k pack you got the things from 3k pack. Nope, if you want adaptive CC and heated seats and panoramic roof, that's $9.4k... Which makes it much more expensive than Tesla...
