"My birthday isn't until September 11th!" This quote from the Awesom-o episode perfectly illustrates his character. He never does anything to hurt anyone, but always end up with the short straw. So sad, and soo funny
What is so sad is that their is a lot of people who could relate to Butters, that seeing how his life goes, shows why it gets harder and harder to be nice as your life goes on... *sigh*
If you also notice in the later seasons, Butters is also showing a lot of signs that he is starting to grow up and becoming more wiser to the bullshit that surrounds him.
Butter's is easily one of the best characters on the show and am glad to a character study being done with a character on South Park. If another character was analyzed like this, I hope it would be Kenny, because there is a lot more to the character than just his deaths.
“Well yeah, and I'm sad, but at the same time I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like, it makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good, so I guess what I'm feelin' is like a, beautiful sadness. I guess that sounds stupid.” This is why, butters is one of the top 3 characters in South Park.

I've always had a theory about Butters: As the series went on, the boys became less naive and less innocent. They pretty much became adults in children's bodies. Some of South Park's best episodes revolved around the boys not understanding or misunderstanding a subject, and things going wrong. Episodes like: "Proper Condom Use", "Cartman Joins NAMBLA", "The Wacky Molestation Adventure", and "The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers". I feel like Butters is kind of a way to keep some of that innocence while the boys can stay more mature, so Matt and Trey can alternate back and forth. Also, pairing him with Cartman just works.

For Butters' appearance it's actually hinted a couple of times that he looks kind of feminine for a boy. The second time is during picture day and him getting grounded for taking a "bad picture". One of his parents specifically pointed out that his face looked girly when he took off the paper bag.
Thats because of the minimalistic art style of the show. The kids also don't have ears and noses from their show design, but they clearly have them even if they are not apparent visually.
Hetanekoloid15 that makes no sense because all their faces are the same if Stan put on a wig and wore a dress you would think he’s a girl if butters put on kyles hat and clothes you would think it’s Kyle there was even a joke in season 5 the episode “super best friends “ when the boys joined a cult and got their hair cut off they couldn’t even tell who’s who
According to the story I've heard, Butters was based on the guy who played both Squeak in Baseketball and Choda Boy in Orgazmo. The boys in South Park represent some basic American archetypes. Butters is your basic American Sincere Guy. If Butters is being oppressed and going along with it, it's because he is easily swayed by a cause, because he believes everyone else is being as honest as he is. If Butters stands up for himself, he usually doesn't do it out of unwarranted rage, or really anything unreasonable; he is again being sincere. Even his attempts at being deceitful or dual-minded are still more forthright and telling than when it comes from the other characters, or most people, even. Whatever Butters does, he cannot escape this basic sincerity at his core. Cartman- Basic American Blowhard. That's the easiest way to put it in a few words. Cartman is that guy that's always complaining about some political thing, but does nothing usually to further a cause himself, and wouldn't, unless there's clearly something in it for him, like the girlfriend he got for campaigning for Hillary. Cartman is the American consumer at his worst. Cartman is American ethocentricity, as well as egocentricity. He represents America's love affair with having an uninformed opinion, doing only what's required to get instant gratification, and with people-watching for the purpose of being amused at the foibles of others. Kyle- Kyle pretty much represents Left-Wing America, and because of Matt and Trey's middle-of-the-road political viewpoint, they use this to show both the decency and good of Left-Wing politics, right along with the misguided, ego-stroking, terrible ideas that also go along with Left-Wing politics. Sometimes, Kyle's job is to be the common-sense Leftist when Cartman uses a Left-Wing agenda for his own aggrandizement. Sometimes, Kyle is right, and he seems to sorta win that point in a way. Sometimes, he's really right, but he gets so caught up in getting credit for being right that it starts to overshadow what started out as a good cause. Sometimes, Kyle is just a big fat idiot that gets caught up in his ideals and the zeitgeist so much that he gets entirely lost, and pisses off all of his friends. Wow. That really sums up a lot, doesn't it? XD Stan- I think Stan is supposed to be, American-Middle-Of-The-Road-Guy. I think he is ultimately supposed to sorta be the voice of Matt and Trey. Stan is a guy that cares, but he doesn't really wanna be stuck in a position to see a lot of tough stuff that he has to understand and care about so much that it hurts. He would rather kinda not know about all the crazy stuff that happens around him. He sort of represents American bewilderment at politics and pop culture. He tries to figure things out, and he rarely concludes that anything is really simple, and he usually seems to find that most of the people involved were full of shit all along. Stan doesn't really want to take anything from anyone that isn't his. He just wants a regular American share of the apple pie, and he grows impatient with a world that won't just let him do that. A grade school girlfriend, some cookies and candy, video games, an occasional sane teacher, and Stan would be set. He never gets that, though, much like we feel as Americans most of the time. [Cue Song: America! America! This is you! lol]
Well, Kenny's story is sad. I feel almost like I'm hurting a real person by analyzing him, but here goes. Kenny, and his whole family represent American poverty. Remember how they used to kill him, each episode? Kenny, like all poor Americans, is expendable. No one really works to prevent his death, or even properly care for the body, or mourn him. He's always allowed to die in horrible ways, and Kyle or Stan usually is the lone voice of outrage over what happens to Kenny. It's usually Kyle, and Kyle represents the group of liberals that don't REALLY care about the person that just died as much as they care about shouting to the world that their politics are failing. Look, here's proof in the form of dead Kenny. The other kids that don't live in poverty, are more protected, and even though they are mere feet away from Kenny when he's killed, they almost always come through without a scratch. Kenny, like most of poor America, is going to the same schools as the other kids, watches the same stuff on tv, but his experiences are vastly different from theirs in the most important ways. Everyone knows about his misery, but those in authority merely pretend it's none of their business. Rather than help Kenny, Kyle uses his plights as fodder for his SJW pursuits, Stan doesn't really know what should be done for anyone in Kenny's situation, and Cartman uses Kenny's poverty as a way to tease and insult him, and to raise his own status by comparison. Cartman is closer to being in Kenny's situation than he realizes. The only thing Kenny can do in defense is never be seen crying over stuff, and learn to be salty enough to give people the same grief he's given. Poor kids have less of a Disney wonderland childhood experience, and are grittier, learn advanced curse words, and references to sex. That's also what the other boys like about Kenny: his ability to bring them adult references and humor, that the other three would have a harder time accessing on their own. Kenny represents how a poor family can live a few houses away from a middle class family, and through impoverished living their experience can be much less healthy and satisfying than that of their wealthier neighbors. Kenny's family exposes the isolation and absurdity of American poverty. In the thanksgiving episode with the canned foods in the tank it's obvious that what they're doing to Kenny is crazy, and exploitative, but the adults go on like they don't notice. The town, and its adults seldom mourn Kenny, because in all honesty, they half-expected the poor kid to die early, so they were callous against mourning him. Kenny's parents are messed up. Kenny's dad is definitely an alcoholic, and seems mildly abusive at times. Like many poor people here, the poverty is driven by addiction, and abuse issues. These are issues that could be addressed, but everyone decides that it's more polite to mind their own business. As a poor kid, Kenny has to be "dealt with" in schools, and other institutions. but if it weren't for that, he would be entirely invisible to most people. Kenny has little value in most people's eyes, except for the other South Park kids, who value him for being a segue between the worlds of kid humor/perspective, to the adult ones.
A+ character study, you managed to hit on all the right points regarding Butter's popularity I like him myself, although he isn't my favorite. He's definitely well loved, and as a result he's appeared more and more lately and I'm glad of that! More background characters coming into focus has only enhanced the show for me, personally.
Let's not forget butters is a good businessman, from his time as him as a Pimp, to time he was involved in the Washington red socks kickstarter venture, to running his own chaos fakenews factory.
There's also Kyle and his attitude/knowledge towards Judaism. In the first 2 seasons, Kyle knew next to nothing about Jewish beliefs, history, and traditions. He couldn't answer Stan's question when he asked why he's Jewish at Christmastime since Kyle himself didn't know why his family celebrates Chanukah or why they light candles on the menorah, he didn't know what a bris was and he didn't even have any knowledge about the Holocaust. By the last one, I'm referring to the episode "Chickenpox" he had to do an assignment for school on how he'd make America better and his own solution was putting poor people into camps after earlier on in the episode he wondered why Kenny's family is poor and his own family isn't. By season 3 and onwards he's more well-informed about his religion. In terms of Kyle's attitude, he was also more defensive and insecure about it (Although this was mostly shown in "Mr. Hanky The Christmas Poo") especially given that most of the other kids in South Park are Roman Catholic and now he's more confident about it, especially when Cartman would rip on him for being Jewish.
I always thought of Butters as a genuinely nice and gentle person. He was timid as a result of wanting to be polite and not hurt anyone feelings (Do to his emotionally abusive parents, he never learned when to say no, that's enough). Even his Professor Chaos persona underlies this, an ultimate result of having enough of being bullied and mistreated, Butters decides to act out, however he is such a good hearted person at his core that, even whene actively trying to be malicious he has trouble actually conceiving of truly bad things to do to people (A big contrast to Cartman who can be malicious even when trying to be nice). However, this "Evil" persona did do it's job of teaching him how to be assertive, as you pointed out in your video.
Butters, to me, represents the innocence in all of us, and what a child truly is supposed to be at their core. He's aloof, genuine in his emotions, and caring for others around him, often times more than himself. He is constantly challenged and beaten down by the sadness of the world, which in many ways is an inescapable part of growing up. That is what South Park, for all of its shenanigans, is about- learning to come to terms with the irony and horror of the world while also still having a sense of humor about it and not letting it fundamentally change you or diminish your spirit.
Everyone knows this by now, but the characterization/mannerisms/voice of Butters came from Trey and Matt mimicking their producer (or art director, I don't remember exactly). Apparently, this dude actually talked a little like this. Imagine if you're just minding your own business, trying to make a cartoon, hanging out with friends...when all of a sudden you're the butt end of all of your boss's jokes on the show through this kid? It must have been wild.
I am loving these types of videos, dude! In my opinion, you should do the South Park characters from least-developed to most-developed. For example, you should do Stan next because while he did get a lot of development throughout the show, he isn't as developed as other characters like Kyle or Kenny and you should do Cartman last because he's the most complex character on the show. Also, maybe you can make these videos longer.
Please make more about each of the characters this was great and the stock footage in the background had me laughing at the memories (especially the episode where butters becomes a pimp- that’s possibly one of my favourites focused on him)
I love butters. Fav moments might be him telling everyone off from the bathroom, or summoning the notorious BIG so he will not miss his party..and of course? Him talking to his grandmother lol.
Kenny is also seen without his Parker in the episode, the Jeffersons, filling in for Blanket and the episode, the losing edge, when they play baseball.
This is so well-done! I appreciate Butters a lot more now haha :) if you ever did more South Park character studies in the future, I’d LOVE to see one on Stan!
Butters is the only completely innocent and wholesome character in South Park, which is why the funniest episodes are when he gets paired up with Cartman, who is the exact opposite.
I always had a theory that Butters real dad is Mr. Slave. If you think about it both share the same mannerisms and quirks in some way, they both shared their first appearance in the same episode, and have a strikingly similar positive outlook on life. Would also explain why his parents, mostly his dad, mistreat him on a constant basis.
Butters is my favorite character. He’s the definition of naive. He’s like Zoidberg. Everyone always picks on him and you feel bad for him, yet he has that innocence to him.
While the quality of South Park has never flagged, sadly it's power as a part of the national conversation was, while more relevant, never as big as the Simpsons at its height. In recent years, it's become like the grand old statesman comedian - the veteran who is still packing houses all over the world, but you don't really hear about through the main channels. And sadly, no being in the limelight has diminished the impact of South Park over the years much more than its fans (myself included) would care to admit. Perhaps part of this is due to the fact that it hasn't kept up with the times. South Park is not a program built for the age of the Internet and RUclips. Family Guy, completely by accident, is simply because, like a great clip show (Key & Peele, who did it on purpose) you can get more with less. You can watch K&P or Family Guy in snippets without context and enjoy them for hours. South Park is like prose short stories in the age of comic strips, or rather, the age of Instagram comics.
Butters is a 2.0 of pip, pip was one of my favorite characters, was the og punching bag of the show and it's sad how he was replaced by butters, I hated butters for that but his character was beautiful so I forgave him for that
When I was little my cousins used to call me Butters because I was perpetually grounded...and always for the lamest, most minute reasons too! Like, not brushing my teeth long enough or taking too long to answer the house phone😂
Poor old Grandma. You know, I-I've been gettin' lots of advice how to deal with you. Stand up to you, tell on you... But I kind of realize there's just people like you out there. All over the place. When you're a kid, things seem like they're gonna last forever. But they're not. Life changes. Why you won't always be around. Someday you're gonna die. Someday pretty soon. And when you're layin' in that hospital bed, with tubes up your nose, and that little pan under your butt to pee in, well I'll come visit ya. I'll come just to show you that, that I'm still alive and I'm still happy. And you'll die. Bein' nothin' but you. 'Night Grandma. -Butters Stoch Season 16 Episode 5 (ButterBalls)

Renet Rowe that makes a lot of sense actually, Kenny's story is so sad
Butters is just the "arent you tired of being nice, dont you just want to go apeshit?" meme humanized into a 4th grade boy with weird hair
Butters is EASILY the best character in South Park.
LAdwv7495
Chef: Hold my Spatula
i think randy is best with butters second :p
Alex Ad
I think
Chef is the best character
Mr Garrison is the 2nd best
And Cartman is the 3rd
İ agree 😊😊
Randy Marsh says “Hello”
I love butters and yes, I am also ready to see more of Character Study :)
Wow, this was a fantastic video.
Innocent naive Butters is my favorite. Butters Creamy Goo is fucking hilarious because he has no idea what's going on.
"Everyone knows it's Butters... 'That's me!'"
A+ character study, you managed to hit on all the right points regarding Butter's popularity
I like him myself, although he isn't my favorite.
Whaat? Stan progressed from vomitting on Wendy when spoken to, to actual relationship issues. Dont tell that is not a developement process :)
ZeruskoO I
There's also Kyle and his attitude/knowledge towards Judaism.
My very first full episode of South Park was Butters getting the throwing star in the eye,he's been my favourite ever since!
must
protecc
*_butters_*
South Park: "How much do you want to torture Butters"
Trey and Matt: *Yes*
Thank you for making this video. I love Butters, and you did a very good job of his character study
cartman has a pretty deep character imo could you do one of him next
cartman has the deepest and maybe the most complex personality of the show
exactly
ya i'd say cartman and kenny
hugonubario mostly because hes a dick-
Actually..... Yes, i mean he REALLY changed a Lot during The show and those changes actually make Sense when you think about it
Butters looks like a tomato
Vivi Daily
can't unsee
Jesus Christ he does.
+S a v a h a n n a
*B u t t e r s l o o k s l i k e a t o m a t o*
S a v a h a n n a a tomato that can do something The Simpson’s did first
S a v a h a n n a OH MY GOD-
I always thought of Butters as a genuinely nice and gentle person.
My favorite episode was Going Native because it has the show’s two favorite punching bags
hahahahaha **cries**
There is one other kid with butters hair. Ike
Ken Goethals and Ike is a baby. Therefore I think they are indicating that butters is somewhat 'babyfaced'
Ken Goethals but he has a can for a head
He's by far my favourite character, but I'll always love em all
Leopold "Butters" Stotch is amazing.
Here's some suggestions;
Trevor ( GTA 5)
Lucas Baker ( Resident Evil 7 )
Cartman ( South Park)
Yes
Lucas Baker needs more love. Ridiculously well written character.
Please make more about each of the characters this was great and the stock footage in the background had me laughing at the memories (especially the episode where butters becomes a pimp- that’s possibly one of my favourites focused on him)
love the direction the channel is going!!
I love butters.
Fav moments might be him telling everyone off from the bathroom, or summoning the notorious BIG so he will not miss his party..and of course? Him talking to his grandmother lol.
7:05 pause for kenny's face
Greenwolf 46 I did and never seen Kenny anywhere
Daniel Malone He's the one sitting next to Clyde and Timmy
You mean between
Everyone in the Comments He is in between Clyde and Timmy. Kenny is finally unhooded
Kenny is also seen without his Parker in the episode, the Jeffersons, filling in for Blanket and the episode, the losing edge, when they play baseball.
the good thing about south park is they they don't have to do too much work with animation. it let's them focus way more on the story and comedy
i must smile when i see butters. seriously, l love him
I love this
Butters has been my favorite for about 8 years now! It’s no contest He always had the best lines!
*Butters should get his own spin-off series.*
This is so well-done! I appreciate Butters a lot more now haha :) if you ever did more South Park character studies in the future, I’d LOVE to see one on Stan!
DO ONE OF THESE ABOUT TWEEK
Awww he’s such a cutie
Can you do camp camp please
No Camp Camp sucks
Bryan Arcanjo
;')
Tweek Tweek YESEESS
Ohno
Bryan Arcanjo you try make something better
Butters is the only completely innocent and wholesome character in South Park, which is why the funniest episodes are when he gets paired up with Cartman, who is the exact opposite.
"In some episodes, his assertiveness turns into aggression."
*hisses at parents*
Hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
I always had a theory that Butters real dad is Mr. Slave. If you think about it both share the same mannerisms and quirks in some way, they both shared their first appearance in the same episode, and have a strikingly similar positive outlook on life. Would also explain why his parents, mostly his dad, mistreat him on a constant basis.
7:24 Butters Bottom Bitch. Excellent episode... Do you know what I am saying?
"Ungroundable" is such a beautiful word...
One of my favorite t-shirts is Butters on the Lunar surface. "Oh hamburgers..."
Butters is my favorite character. He’s the definition of naive. He’s like Zoidberg. Everyone always picks on him and you feel bad for him, yet he has that innocence to him.
Butters IS MY favorite character. I even made a shrine for him
Shane you made a good character and story analyse, with really profesional style.
Do Kyle Brofloski
My favorite butters moment had to be the one where he fakes his death
Butters is a 2.0 of pip, pip was one of my favorite characters, was the og punching bag of the show and it's sad how he was replaced by butters, I hated butters for that but his character was beautiful so I forgave him for that
Butters is secretly the 5th child of the show
Not all kids have the exact same face and body, Cartman's vary due to his obesity, his face and body are like doubled.
He's my favorite character.
MonkeyBoy
Chef is mine
I love the way u worded that.. causes her to lose her grip on reality.... u nailed it bro
That’s me.
OH GOD OH GOD WRONG PERSON SHIT
On the bright side, at least Butters isn't the same kind of brutal punching bag like poor Meg Griffin from Family Guy.
*MY BABY BOY*
When I was little my cousins used to call me Butters because I was perpetually grounded...and always for the lamest, most minute reasons too! Like, not brushing my teeth long enough or taking too long to answer the house phone😂
Cartman also has Butters' colors in his hat
Butters shirt and Cartmans hat are not the same color.
Butters is a great character and deserves more airtime than he has had of late.
Haha, Butter's is my favourite character 🔥
Make more south park character studies!! (Pleeassee do kenny;-;)
i wish Butters and Pip had more episodes together, they where both the most abused and i liked they're interactiond in "two guys in a hot tub"
honestly they where a good duo
This narrator sounds like Scott Malkinson lol
Butters is my favorite character ever
Thumbs up if you saw Kenny without his hood
Tracey Cox Everyone did -_-
This NEEDS to be updated. Soooo good! But I'd love to hear your take on Vic Chaos
good evening
mr. choo choo yes, hello my friend, how are you this fine dusk
Butters is well meaning chaos.
Fun Fact: "Mantequilla" is literally "Butter" in spanish
Butters as a pimp was my favorite Butters episode. It was brilliant!
*lululu i got sum Apples*
One of my favourite character..
Wendy and pip
I was in 9th grade when the 1st episode fully revolving around Butters and his family aired and I'll never forget the next day at school like everybody was talking about how crazy it was and how much they loved it
Wow. This is weird...
You're an a**hole to your son.
Ground this dad! (Click click)
You're an awful dad.
Your a crappy dad
Stephen Stotch stop grounding butters for no reason
A thoughtful analysis. Please continue.
is butters last name stoch
I want a friend like butters
I feel like Kenny isn’t a main character anymore cuz I think butters is replacing him
Hdbdbfhf Ndjfhdbfhf ikr it’s so sad. I love Kenny. Why can’t they just have 5 main characters
Nah, Butters isn't replacing him. Kenny is still one of the main four.
@@sandwichgod692 Kenny is include in the opening but Butters is involved in the plots and he even has episodes dedicated to him. the main four is not even a thing anymore.
