- We did a trail test with the new Jeep Wrangler JL. We wanted to see how far we could crawl up the hill with the stock unit, compared to our Centerforce clutch and high-inertia flywheel.
You will be surprised by the results, watch to see what happens!
We used the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch Kit KDF157077 for this Jeep video.
Also available in Centerforce II Clutch Kit KCFT157077.
I have a 2018 JLU and he's 100% correct! I've stalled it a few times and what they've done to reduce the weight in the flywheel is what's doing it. It's too soft and hard to gauge the engagement is the clutch. Going to look into getting this. I want to go with larger tires and I'm just thinking I'm really gonna stall it then. Gotta get this clutch. You confirmed my theory.
Use OEM throw out bearing. I was warned. Didn't listen. Wish I had , because it raises hell after about 5k miles. Five thousand! Pretty disappointing for the money I paid.

I think this is my first upgrade. Then level kit and slightly larger tires. I really like my 18 JLU Sahara just not the stalling part lol. I've driven many manuals in my time and have never stalled em as much as I have this.
JL OEM clutch is disappointing to say the least. From day one, it felt flimsy...well, I was right. Needs replacing now. Trail abuse with RTT + camping gear = too much for the JL. Can't wait to do this. Trying to decide between Dual-friction or not. Street ability isn't my priority. Off-road performance & durability are my priorities.
Have you decided between the dual friction and center force 2?
@@jf4500 didn't get the dual friction. After a brief discussion with my mechanic, I figured it was best to get the "regular" clutch. Thing is, if I need to inch my way forward, the dual friction may be a little too abrupt to to this. IDK, that was the train of thought for my decision.
I love my JL but the clutch is so damn annoying and soft. It slips and luches in first and loves to stall in reverse. would something like this fix that?
The free replacement.... the recall..... well they installed it in mine. I love it. Much easier to feather it and it doesn't stall as easily.
2023 JLU and I did the recall, 4 wheeling it still sucks.
What gear ratio do you have in that JL? I have a stock 24 3.6 with 488 and 33" tires, and theres no way that I can release the clutch at idle where it wont stall, even on a slight down hill .

So I replaced my factory JK clutch at 114,000 miles with this centerforce setup and now at 132,000 miles, I am getting a lot of clutch slip in first gear. This is a complete unacceptable.
I just crossed the 100k in my JL. Doing research. What did you end up doing?

I just don't get why would different clutch have any effect on the power output of the engine ? Once the clutch is fully engaged whether stock or any other brand it shouldn't have any effect on the idling rpm and overall engine performance . Am I missing anything here?
Look up kinetic energy, more mass spinning makes it less susceptible to stalling and stopping. It’s like a wooden top spinning and another too heavy weight spinning, the metal one will spin stronger and has more kinetic energy.

its not the clutch its the flywheel its much heavier... more mass ....more weight...more energy
Our 2021 Sahara with an MT is great but the reverse gear is really hard to adjust too, even after putting 5k miles on it. We've both been driving manuals for a couple decades and I've never had a car that is hard to reverse in without stalling like this Jeep. It takes insanely high rpms to get the thing to reverse. Would an aftermarket clutch like the one in that video fix that issue?
I know exactly what you mean. I have to do the same in my 18 JLU. It's the reduced weight/inertia in the flywheel. A lot of your launch torque comes from the flywheel. They reduced the weight to allow the faster revs, but in doing so they killed the actual takeoff. Lol I just got mine and already looking at this upgrade. I want to go with slightly larger tires and I'm already stalling sometimes with the stock tires. I'm going to have this vehicle for many, many years so it's worth it to me.
Awesome video! What is the exact clutch combination or model number installed in this Jeep. I have a 2020 JL and would definitely like to upgrade.
My 2008 already has such a slow RPM drop between gears. I’d imagine a heavier flywheel would exacerbate this. I don’t think I would like it in that regard. Might skip the heavier flywheel and just go with the clutch itself.
Does anyone have any real world results on the effect towards gas mileage? I have a 2020 JT Rubicon. The stock clutch sucks, and the looming unsolved recall isnt helpful. I just wish it was over $2k (canadian).

I have a 2021 Jeep Gladiator and the clutch squeals on a cold start up. I start it let out on the clutch and it squeals for 15-45 seconds. My dealership says this is normal and I should just drive it and not worry about it. Any ideas what causes this? Would the centerforce clutch fix this issue. My gladiator has 1067 miles and has never been off road. I love my Gladiator but I’m seriously considering trading it in due to this issue and my dealership experience. Thanks for any guidance.
That sounds far from normal but it's hard to say exactly what would cause that without seeing it. As it's still under warranty perhaps the best thing to do is take it to a different dealership for diagnosis.
Is it true this Centerforce clutch is now recalled and there’s a stop sale on it? I see people having issues and large amounts of noise with this clutch now. They say March 2021 a new version is coming out??
I can't seem to find this product anywhere. Was this clutch package discontinued?
I think is was, I bought one but haven’t installed it yet so it’s brand new in the box. Now they’re saying March 2021 there’s going to be a revised version? I’m not happy about this but feel grateful I didn’t waste time and money installing it to just be pissed off after.

So…I don’t know much about physics but would it mean that more rotating mass from the bigger clutch increase the towing capacity of the manual transmission in the Gladiator?
It's the flywheel. Heavier flywheel means more inertia,. And the weights on the pressure plate help with holding power. You'll never need to replace the thing, really.

I have a 2004 Rubicon 5 speed. 1st gear in Low gear everything stock. I have been up hill over narly stuff at idle no problems. These newer jeeps must really suck or this video is B.S to sell the product.
JL Clutch is a lightweight to say the least. Check the recall
I think this was more of a demonstration to display the clutches holding power, obviously any old truck in low range can idle up that easy.
Well the jlu clutch is trash. I actually off-road my jeep and this clutch is a beast.

My 2018 manual JLU is the 5th stick shift I've owned, not including a motorcycle. Never had an issue with a clutch, ever, even on high mileage vehicles. Burned this one up in 2 weeks, had it replaced with the warranty, and I smell the new one burning already. Need to get the recall correction done, but I can't stand the stock clutch. The gearing isn't great either, there's almost no difference between 5th and 6th.
Jeep... the only vehicle you have to replace multiple parts fresh off the showroom floor. Steering components, bushings, ball joints, clutches, etc. It's all junk.
You're right, but any vehicle that offroads, races, works hard etc. and gets abused needs upgrades. Idc the make.
@@richardc.3513 Mine had 4000 miles, zero of which were off road, and I still had to replace all that stuff because of death wobble. I sent jeep the bill for the parts.
I think that can be said for any performance vehicle. Sports cars to Jeeps. GM put out a 10-bolt rear end from the factory that could be broken w/ a 6-speed and some sticky tires. Mustangs needed SFCs from the start. Upgrading a stock performance vehicle is what enthusiast do.
@@dansbird Yep, the rear end in my 2006 Mustang was junk. They never could get it aligned right so the gears would mesh. I finally got sick of listening to that humming and traded it off. And I can see upgrading a Jeep for more hardcore use, but I was still making payments on it, and wasn't about to do any serious offroading, and the front end components still failed. Replaced them all with Moog parts, and no problems after that. For the price they should come with better components.
Will this plate slow down the acceleration of my Jeep? I have an Edelbrock Supercharger and 5.13 gears. I like to take off fast from red lights sometimes and my clutch is starting to finally go out at 114,000 miles.
A little, because you're rotating more mass. Not sure how much you'll notice it.
