I appreciate this video for its message of producing results that are good enough. As a beginner I'm confident I can do this and that makes me feel much better about where I am on the journey.
An excellent watch, as I'm putting together several SM Kill Teams. Great tips for keeping down the amount of painting work, compared to going all-out on a display piece. Thanks, Vince!
Great Video! Truly the best way I have seen to use contrast! But that is what I expect from the man who has over 1000 videos and truly helps us all to be more realistic in this obsessive hobby. Your the best! Thanks!!
that's funny since I decided to speed jump to my "Imperium" -every month a lot of Space Marine and stuff like that- collection started ! fun and priceless as usual, THX you roxx !

Love the Imperial Fist!! I like these different time frame videos. My personal sweet spot is somewhere between 2-4 hours. Would love to see more of your takes on doing a model in that time.

The latter are not necessarily viable for speedpainting though, admittedly. But then, I usually spend way too much time on my armies anyway.
“Going full Richard Grey on this one”, got me laughing. Really nice job in a short amount of time. I’d love to see a way to tackle 2-3 colour minis in a speedpaint, like e.g. sororitas. I guess it’s all in picking the right under shade (under highlight?) colour and then just colouring in.
Make up brushes FTW! Seriously, using Value Sketching to achieve under painted weathering with inks/contrast paints is an awesome way to get decent tabletop ready models onto the battlefield quickly! Always great content Vince.
Very very cool! I'd really love to see this same video basically, but WITH an airbrush instead. Love to see what the zenithal brings, and smooth panels more.

I really liked the White Scar marine. Personally, I don't get what people see in the banana marines, but to each his own. The rough stippling definitely provides a much different look than the standard, crisp, and very clean marines we see on the box art. Thanks for the video.
You opened up with most boring to least. I was like great ultramarine joke? Like the Chad you are you start with the all black and flavorless legions. Super agree!
Richard grey has been doing a bunch of recipes for imperial fist with the new contrast paints, its some fun ways of doing it there to, and this was great with them all. I could not do a model in 20min and be happy with it , but still fun to see
Oh, also, I would have love to have heard why you chose each undercolor, particularly how it would relate to the final color. I noticed you used brown, ivory, cold blue, etc. I guess you did to some degree, like the two blacks, making one cold and one warm, but I was fascinated in the final run about some of the choices (like brown.)
I'd love to see a vid where you speed paint more imperial fists in different ways and kind of compare them. So different base coats etc. I know if you use a pepto bismal pink as a base then white as your top down highlight you get this really nice orange. I've seen goobertown post about that originally but I was letting my 3 year old paint a few figs the other day and she did that on accident and it was just one of the nicest oranges I've seen and it made me really want to find more ways to apply that
First time I can say "I painted a miniature better than Vince did". Ok second time, first one was when you showed your painting history and your old minis :D.
I heard "the most boring loyalist space marine legion..." and my El Ranchero tortilla chip stuck unchewed out of my mouth as I frowned and knew my Raven Guard were coming first. LUL To be fair, I'm painting my as a successor SIMPLY because I want to put color on them.
Love seeing tips and tricks related to Contrast paints! Curious how you feel about the drybrushing you showcased here vs. airbrush zenithal highlighting? Is one "better" than the other when it comes to speed-painting? I tend to avoid drybrushing because it feels more monotonous to me for some reason, but I can't help but look at your results and be impressed with how "bright" things can look compared to a standard airbrush zenithal. Thanks again.
You could have used a pink under shade, then ivory highlight to give the Imperial Fist an orange shading after the yellow contrast was added. That usually comes out pretty well.
Question. This is how I paint a speed painted grim dark. But how can I go back and improve my army, a white and green 40k death guard? Also do people pay for that style in commissions? People at the FLGS like my paint job and I could use a little money.
If people are willing to pay, then you're good. Most of the time, it's just a matter of people wanting to get some paint on the models. :) - As to improvement, you certainly can, you can always go back and add more shading and highlighting.
I don't care what anyone else says, your list is pretty good. and the only good black armored space marine is deathwatch. fight me, heretics. definitely need to play more with mixing medium into speed paints, and man oh man are those yellows pretty. ^_^
always appreciate your videos. Can't say Ill be embracing these techniques though. The result isn't good enough IMO for tabletop. That Ultramarine and the Iron Hands were probably the exception. I'd say an hour per model is the minimum, probably 3 hours for me because I paint so slowly. One thing I should take away from this video is actually trying to paint fast. See what I can get done in an hour if I really push.
ik u just did a SM speed paint but could you do a guide for super trim heavy models? I play CSM and tsons and its a huge pain painting all that trim even for run of the mill front line troops. Im wondering if you know any tips or tricks that could help out with "speed"" painting them
Your top 3 is my top 3! Not so familiar with the lore, so basing that solely on the color scheme's. Have been enjoying painting space marines just to practice yellow red and white. Experimenting with different undershades and having a lot of fun.
Interesting stuff Vince. Rather than drybrush why don't you just do a rattle can zenithal (or airbrush). Would be a lot quick that the drybrush. Also for some legions, like Ultramarines. Macragge Blue rattle can does 80% of the work then it's just black, gold and silver with red lens and you're done!!
The point here was to keep it as base simple as possible and lower all barriers of entry. Assume they have a black rattle can and brush. The issue with something like a rattle can blue (and I’ve talked about single color priming before) is you don’t get the built in contrast you get with this method (or an airbrush or similar) :)
Great work as usual. As a future video idea, what about hobby cheating video about painting chrome figures?. Such as Marvel Silver Surfer or Hajime Sorayama's robot artwork. Personally I can not find much information about the topic than "use a chrome paint.".
Not related to this video, sorry, but would love to see a video in the future with a guide to basing like what you did for your Leagues if Votann Champion that just got featured on WarCom! Rusty scrap piles is exactly what I want to do for my next army (Genestealer Cults).

Agree that the RG and IH are boring. The only cool black marines have crosses on their shoulders! The coolest Chapter from the coolest Legion But as always, a great job. First thing i thought when I heard you say 20 min per marine was "airbrush". A great no airbrush tutorial, and they do look good, especially for the time involved.
Thank you for this! I have been trying to find a quicker method for black FOREVER....Would you recommend this method with an airbrush instead of dry brushing for the first layer (the drybrush after priming)?

Great video - for thinning the contrast with contrast medium, is the reason for that to make the contrast effect a bit more subtle, but still give good coverage? So you don't get as extreme areas of shade that may need to be brightened up as much? Edit: nvm, was explained later on, ty!

How would you rate the other yellows in the range? I picked up some Ironjawz and have been satisfied with it, but wonder how it compares to Imp Fist and Bad Moon.
Loved the video as ever, plenty of ideas to take away from this; but somehow the contrast colours didn't give the hue I wanted to see - is it just me or did the Blood Angel look too magenta and the Imperial Fist look too cold a yellow instead of a warmer more orangey yellow. Maybe undercoating in deep orange/brown mixture highlight to pale orange and then ivory might have warmed both up?
You mentioned that Imperial Fist would be one of the top 4-5 new paints from the contrast (+Shade?) range. So, what WOULD be your picks? (I just picked up an assortment, let's see how I did. Also, IF Yellow was the first one I picked.)
So my favorite new contrasts, imperial fist yellow, Baal Red, Magma orange, Leviathan Purple, striking scorpion green, Garaghaks sewer and ratling grime.
@@VinceVenturella I get a B+ in this game that doesnt mean anything. But I picked IF Yellow, Baal Red, Magma Orange, Garaghaks Sewer, Ratling grime, Doomfire Magenta and Karandras Green.
Really enjoyed this one, as I have almost a 2nd house worth of Salamanders still in grey. I was thinking of doing the 2nd army, or maybe some of the “older elements” like their tanks and leviathan dreads in old school Salamanders mottled yellow and black. Do you think the imperial fist method shown here and then free handing the black over top would work, or is there another idea that might work better?
Great job. Glad to see the salamanders made it to the cool tier of marines ^^ Quick question: do you think that this general approach (in particular drybrushing highlight then using contrast paint) can be a valuable basis for display models if applied more carefully, or is it really just a speed painting technique not worth using if we plan to spend several hours on a model ?
I’ve mentioned it a few other places, but new red, orange, all the yellows, striking scorpion green, the magenta and leviathan purple, garaghaks sewer and ratling grime
Hey Vince: I've been loving using Makeup brushes for dry brushing and stippling recently, but I've found that it's really really difficult to clean the brushes afterwards. They have SO MANY BRISTLES that color keeps staying deep in the brush long after I think it's clean. Do you have any advice?
Hi Vince,do you heard about the Pollonais painting studio " Den of Imagination",so what do you think about it and why not to do the same kind of company painting minis in the USA or maybe it still exist... Is it a good opportunaty for a pro painter like you to collaborate with such studios, please let me know, thanks, cheers from France!
I have come to realise I just don't like Contrast paints even for speed painting jobs. The tiding is an issue but even without that things feel...washed out. Base+Shade+Drybrush highlight, then details I think gives a much better overall result and takes only a tiny bit longer and...if you use a suitably coloured primer (thank you Montana Gold!) it might even be faster overall.
"AT AT AT AT AT" -The Martians from "Mars Attacks", but also me because Raven Guard are the best. Would you recommend the new contrast paints for creating chromatic blacks (HINT HINT for a reupload + apology /s)? Edit: Hashtag team white Aquila Partial credit for only doing one shoulder pad in company colors...but the wrong side
Teeerribly disappointed, that you didn't paint the most faithful, most interesting and most trustworthy of the Loyalist Marines, the very dependable Alpha Legion! 🙃
Raven Guard player here and I can confirm we have a very boring paint scheme. It is so boring that it burnt my desire to paint for a while. I just got back into it with my orks for 40k and Ironjawz for sigmar.
Hey Vince. Thanks for the video. I’m trying to do an imperial fist army but I’m having trouble sourcing transfers for them. GW sells them for Horus heresy but not for 40K. Is there a trick to this or has everyone just been free handing their chapter symbols?
This was pretty nice. i'm always looking for anything to speed up painting just to get it over with faster. I'm guessing this might not work super great if you are trying for a half and half scheme. my inner masochist has been coming up and bugging me to try that on my own space marines when they get updated. maybe if one half is a super boring color like black. While i can't argue on Raven guard having a boring scheme I will disagree on most boring lore.

Yes, those exact tones can be pretty easily varied to taste by shifting the undershade.
Is the Vallejo Steel color you use an airbrush color? It looks really good so i was trying to find it and all i can see is the airbrush paint.
Yes, it says airbrush but it works for either. I have several videos of it in action on the channel including a review of all steel paints.
Cool video although was the 20 mins including drying time or if not how did you speed it up? I find it can take a while
Hair dryer to speed it up. :)
3:1 contrast:what for contrast thinning?
Contrast medium.
Thanks Vince! Does the two coat thinned down contrast paint work on vehicles to a spur the patchiness?
It can make it better, but it will still be patchy, on those large flat spaces, there won’t be too much to completely remove it.
@@VinceVenturella Just thinking about painting a whole army with this method. Thanks!
I think that would work fine, not sure there would be a quicker way for a scheme like that
Great job. Glad to see the salamanders made it to the cool tier of marines ^^
Quick question: do you think that this general approach (in particular drybrushing highlight then using contrast paint) can be a valuable basis for display models if applied more carefully, or is it really just a speed painting technique not worth using if we plan to spend several hours on a model ?
It could be a base to get things toned, but you’d need a fair amount of work on top of it.
31:00 can you name the rest of your favorites of the new contrast colors?
I’ve mentioned it a few other places, but new red, orange, all the yellows, striking scorpion green, the magenta and leviathan purple, garaghaks sewer and ratling grime
Hey Vince: I've been loving using Makeup brushes for dry brushing and stippling recently, but I've found that it's really really difficult to clean the brushes afterwards. They have SO MANY BRISTLES that color keeps staying deep in the brush long after I think it's clean. Do you have any advice?
Winsor and Newton brush restorer will get the gunk out. Then just clean it with soap.
@@VinceVenturella perfect, thank you!
I’m familiar, they do some cool stuff
I have come to realise I just don't like Contrast paints even for speed painting jobs. The tiding is an issue but even without that things feel...washed out. Base+Shade+Drybrush highlight, then details I think gives a much better overall result and takes only a tiny bit longer and...if you use a suitably coloured primer (thank you Montana Gold!) it might even be faster overall.
No issue, no workflow is for everyone. :)
"AT AT AT AT AT" -The Martians from "Mars Attacks", but also me because Raven Guard are the best. Would you recommend the new contrast paints for creating chromatic blacks (HINT HINT for a reupload + apology /s)?
Edit:
Hashtag team white Aquila
Partial credit for only doing one shoulder pad in company colors...but the wrong side
Something like the imperial fist yellow and leviathan purple plus maybe a touch of the Ork flesh could produce a nice color.
21:46 *...than a light color next to a light color
Do you use some kind of dampening pad before you put paint on drybrush?
Nope, just a paper towel.
Teeerribly disappointed, that you didn't paint the most faithful, most interesting and most trustworthy of the Loyalist Marines, the very dependable Alpha Legion! 🙃
I did a whole video dedicated to them. They, as the most loyal, deserved their own stuff. ;)
I am mostly free handing them or borrowing 30k, not that different
This was pretty nice. i'm always looking for anything to speed up painting just to get it over with faster. I'm guessing this might not work super great if you are trying for a half and half scheme. my inner masochist has been coming up and bugging me to try that on my own space marines when they get updated. maybe if one half is a super boring color like black. While i can't argue on Raven guard having a boring scheme I will disagree on most boring lore.
"everything about them is not interesting" LMAO
Vince does the slap chop method correctly?
He been doing videos about transparent paint/ink over a value sketch loooooooooong before someone called it slap chop. :)
@@brkfstfd was a joke!
@@StackingLimit Oh I totally figured, it just amuses me that sketch style stuff is now widely known as slap chop because of 1 video.
