So crazy to hear you say the rufibarba is one of the hardest! For me, it has been as easy as the burle marxii! It is such a subjective topic and each house and plant parent is different.
I keep mine in a plastic nursery pot in quite low light and it’s pushing several new leaves in waves, it has no brown tips but it’s definitely not because of humidity, I don’t use humidifiers and I don’t spray it with water. I just recently switched to giving it rain water, but before it seems to be ok with tap water, however I feel like it seems to respond to rain water in a positive way with more new leaves!
I’m a chronic under waterer, mostly through being a lazy gardener who works long hours and was always travelling so I keep all my prayer plants in just straight potting mix, sometimes I put a handful of coco chips in for aeration with the more forgiving ones. I also keep them in the plastic nursery pots and use the terracotta as cache pot instead. If I didn’t do these measures as well as keeping them in low to medium light, I’d have a lot of crispy bits instead of barely any. I agree with you, mine are in 50% humidity as I don’t have a humidifier and they’re fine as long as their moisture levels are kept on top of. The Warsewiczii was the one that gave me the biggest grief, it literally crisped up the minute I got it home. Half the plant was brown and crispy overnight…however I figured it was because I acquired it in the middle of winter, which I had to take public transport to get it home.
I have a few different varieties...my most difficult are the Medallion's. I have killed the ones I had. They were so pretty. With that said, I won't buy amymore. The others are surviving/thriving so I am satisfied with what I have. They're so lush and beautiful.
I agree with you on the Orbifolia, I also noticed I had a lot less crisping on the leaf edges when I started watering more often. I increased humidity too, but I really think it’s the more regular 💦 schedule. Same thing with my Alocasia Polly tbh
This was a very helpful video! I love your collection of prayer plants!
Thank you so much!
i find it hilarious i picked up a mislabeled calathea medallion as a fiddle leaf for my first ever impulsive plant from trader joes that turned out to be one the most. difficult type for most. they are so beautiful and I've repotted twice. every few weeks the foliage gets damaged or gives out.. insane brown tips and crispy edges...it shoots up new ones time to time but they are usually very light and limp., i overwatered once but now i think im under watering out of fear lol it feels like a 24/7 nanny gig and nothing ever seems good enough. im still determined to nail it and learn the ideal living conditions. we recent got mushrooms popped up so im hoping it'll help out. right now i have a new humidifier , i cut back the dying leaves and im tweaking the water as i go. i thought letting it dry out would be better but ill try to stay on top of it being moist.
Commenting as I watch, haha. I'm on my third triostar and it has 2 leaves. You really are a pro to be able to keep calathea in clay pots! There's no way my little green peeps would tolerate me if I put them in terracotta.
I agree, there is no way I could keep mine in terracotta. I keep mine in plastic pots and use a chunky soil mixture to prevent root rot.
Mine don’t have a choice lol 😆
@@RootingMindfully I have completely given up on the Medallion. I had one last year and it got spider mite and completely lost every leaf. I purchased a HUGE Dottie last spring. It started crisping. I put it outside. Didn’t do a lot. It now lives on my shower caddy . I’m just waiting for it to me it’s botanical maker in the sky. It will not be long🙏🏾
How timely!!! I just got my first prayer plant yesterday!!!! Let me watch!!!
Edit: Ok, I have the Calathea Maclennan... whew... but I plan to get another one and I think it's in the "intermediate" category. So let us "pray"... pun intended 😏... However, I don't have as many plants so I should be able to remember to give it the attention it needs...
Loved the video 🙏🏾
@Cherish God great! Its my absolute favorite of my small collection
Thanks for your information- I have a medallion plant. Now I know more about it - drying and light issues- it will be moved and set on rocks for humidity
Thanks for sharing❤️💚☘️🍀
The worst is the white fusion. It wants light but burns when it gets it. The white parts of the leaves just melt away. Even at over 60% humidity its leaves melt. I am now trying a cooler location with North light. We will see. Also, of course as the leaves melt it gets spider mites ta boot. ugh.
Loved this video. First one I've seen about prayer plants in such detail. I am subscribing.
Love prayer plants
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Your no1 most difficult has been my easiest calathea. Just put it in a larger plastic container. I only have to water mine once a week, if that. It's a calathea i can leave and forget about. Haven't had any crispiness. Solution to your problems seem to be in the type of pot you're using for thirsty plants. I know you said you prefer terracotta for peace of mind but you gotta adapt that mentality and think if a plant is constantly thirsty you're safe with a plastic pot.
Thank you for sharing your prayer plants they are amazing beautiful
I've DEFINITELY had the same experience with my rattlesnake calathea as far as the weird grow spurts, and I've actually had mine under a few different grow lights pretty much the whole year and a half I've had it🤷
I couldn't agree more with the rattlesnake calathea. It reeeaally takes its time!
Wow 21 of them. I have 1, the variegated maranta lacunosa. Good video.
I have 6 Calatheas an Rosiopictium, can’t spell is hardest one I have. Love the Rotundafolia, Orbifolia, Network, Rabbit tracks. Totally agree with you on these plants. 💚😀
My rattlesnake calathea won't grow at all!!! It keeps getting smaller and smaller, lol. I've had it two years and it's pretty small now. haha. I love it but do wish I could encourage it to grow. I just put a plant serum on it to see if that might help. I'll let you know if it sinks or sails! I think the serum will save it or finish it off.
Great Vid!
I own ctenanthe burle marxii, calathea orbifolia, calathea zebrina, calathea Rattlesnake, calathea rufibarba, maranta leuconeura kerchoveana, and all have been easy for me. For humidity I keep them in groups, for water I use moisture meter and water when at 3 or 4, and only with bottled water, for pest prevention and light absorption I clean the leaves every 2 weeks. The only calathea that gave me grief was one called calathea picturata, and it got spider mites and I eventually chucked it away.
My first prayer plant was the beautiful Calathea White Star. She grew so well and full…until she didn’t. She invited spider mites and shows the damage from the mites and treatment. I haven’t given up on her though. Orbifolia I am about to put outside. She is not growing and looks a bit sad. I don’t have time for another prima Donna. I will stick with the maranta. My red and lemon lime are so much happier. Your collection is so beautiful.
Thank you.
I have the orbafolia and I use filtered water on mine. I wick watered mine until it got to big. I love wick watering plants!
I have 13 prayer plants. I have all but the Calathea lancifolia in self watering. It does grow in waves. Right now I have 4 leaves unfurling. I received it as a Christmas gift 3 years ago when I started at a new school. It is now huge. I have Stromanthe triostar, Ctnenanthe burle marxi, Ctnenanthe lubbersiana, Calathea rufibabra, Calathea gay feather, Calathea Warscewiczii , Maranta red, rabbits track and the variegated rabbits track which incidentally is my only parent plant to get pests so far. I found mealy bugs on her last week, Maranta silver band. My hardest prayer plant is the Calathea Louisae. It is a crisp city. It came in the mail that way and it has stayed that way. surprisingly, it has flowers now. I use filtered water from my Brita. With the filtered water and the self watering pots, crisping and brown tips are mimimal except for the one problem child. You have a nice collection. These are my favorite plant family
I have had the Calathea Makoyana for about 4 months and the past month or so the leaves have pulled themselves down and in as far as they can go. I did have it under grow lights and took the grow light away so it definitely isn’t getting too much light now. It is in a southern window about 4 feet away from the window. I have a diffuser right by it that I put on when the humidity gets below 60%. I live in Florida and my indoor humidity runs between 60 to 75% even with a/c on. Can’t figure this plant out.
Hey, I just checked it under a bright light and saw webs so yay, I figured out what might be the problem. Spider mites. Checked all my other plants and thankfully only one other has them. My Calathea Vitata. Treated them both.
Maranta's start off easy......:) They will die on you in a minute! I'm trying another one right now it has been a little over two weeks and it is looking good. Absolutely do NOT overwater.........:) Excellent video.... Yes I use mostly clay pots now........:)
Yes they like moisture but I would definitely agree with it overwatering. Thank you 😊 a lot of people don’t want to use clay pots but I can say that they definitely work.
Very informative....thank you!
Thank you 😊
How are they doing now? I love prayer plants they are my fav but I just can’t seem to get it together. I saw this video and think my lighting is the issue but worry about how much humidity I need to. Going to get me a sol tech light
Thanks for the video. I have the rattlesnake calathea and orbifolia. No pests so far, and not too much crispiness. I don’t think they care about the water, because I am lazy and just give them tap water. Not sure how our water is in SF, but doesn’t seem to bother them too much.
Happy Thanksgiving! 😀
Thank you :) Same to you :)
I love my rattlesnake plant the best of all and they are very easy to care for. Mine has doubled in size since I got it and one day I want it to be huge where I will need to make it a floor plant.
Good video
That rattle snake grows in waves...usually around fall...around the time you Prayer plants in big box stores.
That is very interesting 😊
Can you bless a sister with some cutting when they are bigger. I have only seen one of them in my country.
My Medalion has an attitude.
Hardest for me is the white fusion, the easiest is the musaica. I tried the white fusion, pinstripe, and zebrina twice and both times they eventually died a slow painful death, my medallion died too. Stromanthe and maranta are easy for me, and the makoyanna and rattlesnake. Spider mites are a big problem for some of them, especially the zebrina. My dottie and rufibarba are looking really bad. Calathea are so beautiful but I'm not buying anymore, they're too annoying sometimes lol
Yes that zebrina is something else. A true spidermite magnet smh lol I don’t know if I would ever try the white fusion again lol
Do the beginner prayer plants require humidity..... because I provide food, clothing and shelter, I don't provide humidity 🤣🤣🤣.... then again am in Florida so sunshine and humidity is unlimited.... I really like the prayer plants even though I don't own one
If you live in Florida, you shouldn’t have a humidity problem with the easy plants that were mentioned. You should try them!
I would try the maranta. They are much more easy going and your humidity level should be fine
That’s also hilarious lol
@@RootingMindfully thanks 😊
@@MaryDavisBrown Thanks Mary
The calathea ornata (pinstipe) is the easiest. I have four, they all grow like weed. The ruffibarba I already divided.
I wanted to try that one. You are the first person to say it is easy. Others say it is one of the hardest ones.
🌻
I'm finding both stromanthes and ctenanthes to be easier than marantas. I'm still learning prayer plants.
Really? That is interesting
I have trouble with yellow fushion
My rattlesnake started growing with more water
where's the ornata ?
No problems with Zebrina, but Warsewiczii...impossible...killed two already and watching my third one slowly dying now.... 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Maybe try potting the rufibarba into a bigger pot? Mine is completely non-problematic, standing in a pretty shaded spot and i water it every 10 days or so! And it's growing like crazy!
Alot of your crisping is probably due to clay pots
