I got my adult Abssynian free from the cat shelter. Nobody wanted her because of her big ears & strange look and she was mean after having to stay in a cage for months on end. It took 6 months to get her personality to show itself. Smartest cat I've ever had. Doesn't mind being by herself. Will sit next to you and doesn't want to be picked up. And really does like to be high up. Love her & wouldnt trade her for the world.

Omg unbelievable... Mine found me skinny and starving and I couldn’t find an owner and I found our years later someone on the street down threw him out! (They had moved by then).. I didn’t know he was a breed cat at first but I just cannot imagine who could throw out such a wonderful cat regardless.
Mine became a total lap and even just carry around like a baby or cuddle like a teddy bear kinda cat by now. I know it will sound ridiculous but he is my best friend.

Thanks Lisa your little guy is adorable and you are correct on all points our Abby Blue just turned 8 I never thought in a million years I'd like a cat over a dog but our son wants after we took him to the museum to see the king, tut exhibit if you notice the cats that are exhibit in the king tuck exhibit looks just like an abby. I think this breed originally is from Ethiopia nevertheless, I fell in love with my little guy and can't imagine life without him but I know all of us will have an end point. Again thanks for sharing your little he's certainly an Abby on all points. I adopted what I thought was a tabby. He chose me the minute we laid eyes on each other . He looked right past the friend I was with and began meowing directly at me insistently. I later began calling this kind of meow his “air raid siren.” He was 3 months old, and when I asked to hold him, I was told “a family adopted him and brought him back. They say he doesn’t like people.” I was like, “Well, he likes me.”
He was with me…and became my soul mate…for 16 years. I never even considered that he could be Abyssinian until years later. He looked like a tabby but stayed lean throughout his life. He ate CONSTANTLY, and I never denied him anything. He only liked male cats, but that could have been because when I brought him home, I had a female Siamese and she hated him. He became the alpha and she lived her life separate from me and him…even though living in the same house.
My Abyssinian baby talked all the time…very expressive, and I loved it. He was always such a good boy. My cat sitter once told me, “He KNOWS he’s a good boy.” He never once hissed at me no matter how angry he was. He also made it clear that he only wanted me.
If I said “Kiss,” he’d come from wherever he was to press his forehead against my lips. He saved my life once when I was in the bedroom on the computer. He kept running in and out, meowing loudly. I finally went out to see what was going on, and my kitchen was on fire. He was running in and out to alert me.I grabbed the extinguisher just in time to put out the flames. Truly the best baby boy ever.
He really was the very best. I miss him so much. Not a day goes by where I do not think of him. I have not gotten another as he is a tough act to follow.

@scotnichols385 We have had many kitties and doggies in our 52 years of marriage. When we lost our big girl Applehead Siamese after 18 years I cried more than I did when Mom died. Yes, our pets cross the Rainbow Bridge, and leave wonderful memories. And a huge vacuum.
Don't deny yourself the pleasure of another furry friend, or the pleasure of being a furry friend's human. There are kitties (and doggies) in shelters who need YOU as much as you need them. Don't worry, your first friend's memory won't fade. I like to think all of our companions now over the Rainbow Bridge are waiting for us with Mom.
It's the Holiday Season. Make a new friend. Or two.

Very beautiful. You will be so jealous when I tell you that my male Aby is sitting in my lap as I watched your video and am
typing this note. My female sits in my lap too. They are 9 and 10 now (also had the same father and they both fetch, just
like a dog) so perhaps Lucky will like lap better as he ages. Also had one 20yr ago that started sitting in my lap at 11yr old.
I'm in my 70's now and got my first Aby at 39. What a blessing. I've often thought of getting an older one from a rescue instead of a kitten when mine go to kitty heaven and I am old too. Thank you for sharing. Aby's have brought so much

Thank you for this terrific video. I had an Abyssinian a bunch of years ago he lived to be almost 19. He was the most hilarious cat I ever had and it's constantly entertaining us period and all of those things that were mentioned in the video like not being a lap cat, instead he would sit behind me and lick my hair. And also loving height he would sit on the top of an Open Door which was perhaps one inch wide and sit there and just look down on us. He did so many very bizarre and funny things. He was a little guy at 7lb and as the video stated he always kept in shape by racing around and having lots of energy. His name was Teddy and though he died many years ago I still miss him he was just a great cat

I've had 7 Abys and they've all been extremely affectionate, cuddly at bedtime and very playful even into late adulthood. They usually bond tightly with one family member. The only drawback I've found is that their lifespan is short compared to other cats I've had who lived into late teens and early 20s. Most of my Abys have died before age 10, which is a devastating loss. My current Aby is 13 and I cherish every day with her.

I've got a weird little cat, and now I'm wondering if he isn't part Abyssinian. I've suspected he might have some sort of exotic cat heritage. He's so different from my other cats. Tiny little dude, eats like a horse but stays skinny, he yells a lot, too too too much energy. Needs a literal hour of play time every morning and afternoon or he throws a tantrum and/or bullies his sister. Constantly ambushes the other cats and humans. He has a wall that is apparently his nemesis, he will yell at this wall and attack it for a solid 20 minutes at a time. No idea why. Turns on the sink to drink but just leaves it going, and eventually puts all his toys in there. He's super smart, knows a bunch of words. Even seems to follow conversational cues. If I wasn't a cat person, it would be a little much. He does get a little cuddly once he wears himself out though.

I have two sisters from the same litter and they have completely different personalities. One loves visitors, the other does not, but both visit me several times a day to lie against me and cuddle. They choose their moments, so in that sense they are not lap cats, but they are both very affectionate with me and they also enjoy lying close to me, even though they also enjoy their solitary moments in high places. They run around like crazy as well, but they never hit any of the objects they come across. One of them does sometimes have moods in which she wants to see what happens when a full glass is turned over, but they are not destructive at all. I also play with them a bit every day, but it also helpen to have two because their favorite game is racing after each other. They are very active and curious, so if you want a cat that just lies in the window or on your lap than they are probably not for you.

I had a pair from the same litter too. I had the female my neighbor had the male, but they didn’t like to be separated. My female was an avid hunter and she’d like to kill anything that moved. She brings presents to the front door every day. At least five items a day. I was mortified when she would bring rabbits (small) and pigeons, because I thought those were much too large for her to kill, but she proved me wrong.

Lovely video. I have two aby crosses but they look just like full Abysinnians. They're rare in the UK. I found them to have lots more energy than my previous Russian Blue who was shy, loved to lounge and be carried around all the time. They are more dog like, love to play and interact with people and my dogs constantly. They're super naughty, clever and really fearless, both mine love water. Never a dull moment with Abys but they will come up for quiet cuddles too. I'd say they're not for first time cat owners unless you're home a lot and don't mind a few breakages.

We adopted our twinsies from a Siamese rescue.
Our boy is half- Bengal (mom’s a purebred, but father unknown-his litter bas the typical coat; distinctive rosettes & glitter like mom, with the exception of Raspy & 1 sister
He has the stereotype personality & likes to yell a lot.
We were told that my girl is an Oriental Shorthair mix.
Mom & all of Nurra’s litter mates are torbies or torties.
She is also vocal, especially with her brother.
When she was a baby, she had ridiculously huge ears & pointier face.
She didn’t fully mature until she turned 2.
She’s muscular, but very compact & looks smaller than her weight. She was very small for her age (just under 3 lbs when she was 4 months),
Long torso, long neck & very long tail.
Even though she’s a tortie, as grew, she developed spots, rings & mascara marking until she was around a 🦝
As she became a grown up, she looks more like Abyssinians, except a for her coat colour. Her fur does look darker at the tips, but isn’t the typical agouti shade-
Pretty much everyone thinks she must part Aby & don’t see the OSH, except for the colour.
I thought that she would be a Stage 5 clinger like my boy & my previous Ocicats. (She does like to follow, not a fan of being held.
She’s so silky, sweet, smart & athletic. Definitely more passive the half Bengal boy.
Like your guy, you have to go her to pet her.
She will roll on her back to get her tummy rubs, purr & make air biscuits
I just wish soy on my lap

I agree that Abys (and Somalis) are not so good at living with other cats
I have a 3-4 y.o. mix of Aby and Somali and a pire bread Somali and they hate each other. We have ended up fencing the entry of every room with baby gates to prevent fights.
So much effort was put into making them friendlier with only very minimal result. I am still hopeful and optimistic ( no choice😂), but looking back, I would either adopt a pair from the same litter or to have 1 cat.

I had two abys...now just one :(. They were from a cattery that showed cats. Did not breed them to sell. 8 and 13 pounds. I have friend who's had 8 of them over time and they have a lot of things in common but can be up to 15 or more lbs. They are LONG not heavy. Very athletic... one of mine is a snuggler lap cat the other liked to sit with/near me but not on my lap. They are 'the dogs of the cat world' as they do love people. So some of what you say is somewhat accurate, but certainly not for all Abyssinians. Per instructions I fed them wet food in the morning and left kibble for them to eat when they felt like it. Treats at 8pm...and they knew what time it was! So my retired show cats were 'rescued' from a crowded cattery and I'll never have any other kind. Will I pay 1500 for a kitten? not likely.

Had my ruddy since she was 8 weeks. Close to 3 years old now. Spoil her rotten then suddenly for no reason she turned wild and tries to attack my face and hands. Hard to stop the bleeding. I'm worried about having my eyes cut open. Something snapped and it's like she doesn't recognize me anymore. Scary as hell and her screaming is deafening. She's terrified of me now and I can't walk into a room without the threat of being torn up. I always treated her like gold, ALWAYS! She just turned from a sweetheart to a monster just 5 days ago.

i adopted a "weird" looking house cat from a shelter that took in street cats a couple of months ago, when he finally arrived and i could see him in person i was SO confused, he looked so weird, i knew he wasnt a house cat or at least not fully, he is black and i thought that he was a siam mix for a while but then i found this breed and he matches everything to a T minus the fact that he is black, so, since i already have him im trying to learn as much as i can about the breed

This breed is very wild and also energetic. There might be a problem when an Abyssinian cat is introduced to a different breed; it might irritate other cats. So vets must be careful when an Abyssinian cat comes to their hospitals where a lot of cats are already staying.

But the wife found a breeder nearby who had a blue damaged at birth, three legs, back left gone, priced right. Blue Moon is the most joyous cat we've had. Watching him walk is kinda sad but he runs like lightning and he loves to run. :-)

i uploaded a picture to instagram and on one of these days before the picture was loaded google ai or whatever it is writing a description of the picture, told me that those are "abyssinian cats" yet mine are black but they got the high pitched voices a specific short hair, more muscular, more attached and bolder.. other treats are a broader face and almost hypnotical gestures if they are scared or look out, they are twins and if you make an unexpected noise they look at you and the way their hair falls when they are alert is special, really two super noble elegant alien beasts. The pelt of those feels almost "hard" like well maintained shorter dog hair, slightly more tender. Thanks to that the conturs of their physique is much more visible. And as i said, the voices do not "meow" its more like speaking and shirping, more articulate, almost like veggies but even higher in pitch and more variety, at least to my veggie, to express that they do not or want something.

Hi there, I'm from Ottawa, Canada and have a female absynnian cat. I was looking for a cat that needed re-homing and found her on Kijiji. As luck would have it, it was my daughter's care provider when she was young around 4-5. Once I realized it was her, I reached out. There were too many people in their home from screaming toddlers to grandparents. She needed a quieter home. I took her and she is so lovely. She's 4 yo, weighs only 5.5 lbs and yes, she has an appetite but is still skinny. I give her wet food at 7am, dry food at 9 that lasts all day and wet food at 6:30 pm. Problem is I got her in Jan of this year 2022. She has her shots but needs to be spayed. The city here says it takes 10 weeks to respond to requests, then surgery appt is 5-6 months away. Quite frustrating when she goes in heat. Have to keep bedroom and bathroom door closed from her spray. She never does it on the couch where I chill but seriously, still waiting for the clinic.

I always wonder what do pets think when people start talking like this. Out of a sudden the owner starts making noise. To animals it must be as irritating and unclear as a dog barking for hours in a row to us. Like "shut up already! You're not doing anything! You're just being noisy!" The cat is sleeping or relaxing and the owner grabs some black box and starts her "alyogolyolywaaaaaleeegolywollymollybillywillytillyRAAAAAbilimili..." Then touches you (cat) saying "gobywaBAAA?!" What? What do you want? Have you gone mad? "GobywaBAAA! Paasoufee! Shaaa!" What?! What do you want, woman?! Should I get up? Should I give you a mouse? What?!! "GobywaOOJtafee" and leaves. Ok, so she didn't want anything. I guess... I hope... I swear, I'm gonna bite her next time she does that. Can't I have a sleep? Oh no, she's coming back... With 3 spoons and a blue rope. "Lachapee poof!" OMG now she wants me to lick one spoon and keep balancing the other one on my head. What's the rope for? I wanna leave. Hey, open the door. Oh! Oh, here we go, the rope was for my tail to not leave. Now she's hitting the spoons one against another making even more noise. Why can't humans be nice? Sigh... She's so stupid, when is she gonna get bored?

You find a lot of Abyssinians for adoption - more so than of other cats (at least in my country). This tells me that they are not for everyone. I am thinking about getting 2 Russian Blues - they are very hard to find for adoption even thought we have many breeders here, so people are generally getting along with them. They are more on the calm spectrum - something that agrees with my life style.
Though I love Abys and their behavior - they are simply not for me (small apartment, no garden).

I'm a dog person so not used to having a cat that enjoys being alone. He does have a cat tree in almost every room in the house so we prefers to sit in those and look out the window but still be able to keep tabs on where I am. A second cat sounds like a great idea. Lucky is so evil and mean to other animals - I've tried introducing him to puppies, cats, kittens - he just hates them all. He prefers being an only child kitty so you might want to do a test run with other cats to see how your abby reacts. XO Lisa

She would grind her chin against mine so hard that she eventually got a callus. She was a beauty. She loved visitors and would make sure she was in the middle of everything
She would get in my bed at night for about 30 minutes and then take off to make her rounds. Sadly, I lost her just a couple of months before her 14th birthday
My aby that I have now is in my lap most of the time, super protective and territorial, incredibly intelligent, and stays off the counters, shelves, tables, etc. She's never broken anything! She doesn't like other animals, though. She wallows all over my sweaty t-shirts, trying to get my scent on her or visa versa.
