You sued your doctor for medical malpractice.
    You believe he was careless.
You believe his wrongdoing caused you harm and injury.
You also believe your injuries are permanent.
During the course of your lawsuit, you will have to answer questions by the attorney who represents the doctor whom you have sued. This is pretrial questioning. It's also called a deposition. Lawyers also call it an examination before trial.
In pre-Covid times, it would take place in your attorney's office, in his conference room. During Covid-times, it typically takes place virtually, by Zoom video call. There's no judge there and there's no jury there. Instead, it's just you, your lawyer, the opposing lawyer and a court stenographer. The answers you give carry the same exact weight as if you are testifying at trial.
The court stenographer records all the questions you're asked and all the answers you give.
Many injured patients and injured victims have great anxiety as their deposition approaches. They think the defense lawyer who will be questioning them is going to aggressively go after them as if he's cross-examining at trial. Others are worried that the opposing attorney will try to trick them into giving answers that are not favorable to their case.
Turns out, both of those fears are unfounded. That's not what happens.
