  • Among the many states with eugenics legislation, Virginia is infamous for its legal campaign to forcibly sterilize Carrie Buck in 1927 and thereby entrench sterilization abuse as the law of the land.

    Good video.
I do belive in medical birth control.. for repeat child abusers, those who hurt/rape a women and those with severe mental distress
But not for rape victims or those who aren't good at math..
Id like to know more about the trial. It's suggested she was an average student but was abused by a foster family member. Was it because she was raped or was she truly unfit.

I am by no means an expert on this topic, so please do not take anything I am going to say too seriously. Carrie Buck was sexually abused by a relative of her foster parents, which resulted in her pregnancy. She was sent away to give birth to her baby because illegitimate children were very shameful during the time. They disguised the purpose for this sterilization by saying she was mentally disabled, which was not true. Around the 70s/80s, she was mentally evaluated again, and was confirmed to not be mentally ill. Carrie herself was an illegitimate child and lacked social graces. It seems this case was more about poverty, sexual morality, and social deviance. Rather than ending the line of those who were mentally deficient (which was NOT right either), the government wanted to stop the reproduction of those who were unsophisticated or deemed inferior (this is not a confirmed fact). These sterilizations laws did not only effect mentally ill people. In the 1930s, many states applied them to drug addiction, alcoholism, deafness, and blindness. I retrieved this information from a source that came out in the 80s. Look up "Carrie Buck's Daughter by Stephen Jay Gould." Once again, I am not a professional and have done minimal research- do not trust me too much. I am just a teenager doing research to write a screenplay for a short film based on this case. Feel free to correct me if I am spreading misinformation. If anyone has any additional information about this case, I would love to learn about it/incorporate it into my screenplay.

By the way, I wrote this response prior to watching the video, so that's why it may be repetitive.
