- democracynow.org - As President Obama nominates centrist Judge Merrick Garland to replace late Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court, we take a look at what’s been described as one of the worst Supreme Court rulings in history. In the 1927 case Buck v. Bell, the court upheld a statute that enabled the state of Virginia to sterilize so-called mental defectives or imbeciles. The person in question was Carrie Buck, a poor, young woman then confined in the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and the Feebleminded, though she was neither epileptic nor mentally disabled. In the landmark decision, eight judges ruled that the state of Virginia had the right to sterilize her. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote the majority opinion concluding, "Three generations of imbeciles are enough." The decision resulted in 60,000 to 70,000 sterilizations of Americans considered "unfit" to reproduce. At the Nuremberg trials, lawyers for Nazi scientists cited the opinion in defense of their actions. We speak to Adam Cohen, author of "Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and the Sterilization of Carrie Buck."

To all Disabled people who have been forcibly sterilized...
I LOVE YOU.
You did not deserve that.
I want you to get justice.
I want your voices to be heard.
*Thank You!*
Forced sterilization did not stop when they said it did and it went on for a lot longer then they said it stopped . It did not stop . As for Justice I quit believing in that a long time ago .
This is where the Nazis got it from?
What the hell... that is insane. America's history is pretty disgusting.
+Dustin Bruce - you got that right.
America's History is horrific to say the least,America is going to burn soon
+The Reel Dill You guys are total morons. Eugenics measures are all over the place. Lets get practical. We would be so much better off if people with IQ's under 90 were sterilized.
Why are white people worse? Genocide has been perpetrated on every continent by every ethnicity.
*****
Not sure where you picked up that idea, but that's not a progressive idea at all.... now or ever.
Sanger wrote, “In animal industry, the poor stock is not allowed to breed. In gardens, the weeds are kept down.” America, Sanger concluded, must learn from the Nazis and carry out nature’s own mandate of getting rid of “human weeds.”6
Hitler never quotes Margaret Sanger, but he was inspired by the writings of two of her associates, Leon Whitney of the American Eugenics Society and Madison Grant of the New York Zoological Society. During the 1930s, Whitney on one occasion visited Grant to proudly show him a letter he had just received from Hitler requesting a copy of Whitney’s book The Case for Sterilization.
Sanger wanted to make it look like the sterilizations were voluntary. In a 1932 article, Sanger called for women to be segregated from the larger community onto “farms and homesteads” where they would be “taught to work under competent instructors” and prevented from reproducing “for the period of their entire lives.” If the women didn’t want to live this way, they could get out of it by consenting to be sterilized.

God Bless SCOTUS Pierce Butler. Sole dissenter. Butler is still villified to this day.
It's kind of amazing that the judgments of these flawed people are held sacrosanct.
this is insane!!!!!!!!!!! this is America???
BLINE ONE Yep and it happened sadly
Indeed. In fact, the USA was the founder of the eugenics movement and the world leader in forced sterilizations.
John W Pretty messed up ya.
Americans are the original Nazis
IT STILL HAPPENS!
If you understand the process of Natural Selection, then you understand the goals of Artificial Selection.
You can be intelligent but stupid. Because stupid is as stupid does. It's about behavior(character).
Nothing's sacred.
i remember in the mid to late 70s seeing an afterschool special about a young woman with downs' syndrome who was forcibly sterilized, so this was happening till recently
its still happening in california jails and somewhere else in Va or NC, i cant remember
Jacc Trippa That’s sad and horrible
Still happening
It happened all the way up until 1988 and I believe even longer as there were cases like Jacc Tripps mentioned . It never stopped and is still legal today .
I'm only here because my professor wanted to give us homework -_-
Prevention of Sexual Assault, Mandatory Classes, for boys 6th thru 12th, grade!!!!!
Black robed Baal Priests decide whatever they please; there's no rule of law at all. It's legal gobbledygook.
Where's Juan? The feeble-minded deserve some representation here . . .
this was educational... :(
how many boys were sent to a spay and nuetering clinic?
I doubt not very many that is for sure !
Nothing wrong happened, move along
So all people with a disabilities are better of dead?!?!
No one else, especially the government should be allowed to determine whether someone is better off dead or not born based on something they can't control and doesn't affect anyone else!
What about special education placements?
*Special Ed was originally designed as the school to prison pipeline and as a way to segregate black students into separate classrooms once schools became integrated*
*Further psychiatry developed in the mid 1800s had a label to diagnosis slaves who sought freedom and to run away, labeling them as crazy*
@@jshir17 Aren't all public schools now school-to-prison pipelines? Particularly in low-income areas?
Bulging Battery 🔋 *Yes but particularly Special Education programs as they were designed specifically for that purpose whereas general public schooling was not*
Its needed again
Bullshit... Margaret Sanger was not a eugenicist and was not part of the eugenics movement and the alleged "bad things" she said was in a private personal letter that she wrote to a friend, not a formal statement on any social issues. I read all her books by the time I was 12. I know she wasn't a eugenicist. Her main focus was better contraceptive health and sex education and women's medical issues including mental and economic health. One of the most innaccuratley reported things in modern history is this .
They need to bring this back and apply it to democrats.
Jews jewwws JEWWWWWS!!!!
German jews

Well,if only it were 1927,the trump problem would be solved.
