I live in Johannesburg and hold a B. Cur. 1982 from UPE (Nelson Mandela Bay University, South Africa). I’ve been a private nurse practitioner for 20 years, seeing my patients in their homes.
I went to the Royal Adelaide School of Nursing. Training was rigorous & on the job oriented. Then I went to Flinders University to get a Degree in Nursing. I felt that even though I trained as a student nurse I seemed to be advanced in procedures compared to college trained nurses. As a student I worked in Orthopaedic, Colorectal, General Medical, Oncology, Haematology, Plastics, Thoracic, Neurology, Renal, District Nursing, Paediatric ( Intensive care,Thoracic, Haematology,& Oncology), Theatre, Accident & Emergency, Recovery, Intensive Care, Burns Unit, Cardiac & General Surgical to name a few. Rather like an Intern Doctor. We also did shift work- including night duty( approx. 12 weeks) When I did my degree I worked in 2 areas- Cardiac & Colorectal! Those in college/university undergoing their degree for 3 years worked a fraction compared to what I did as a student. Working & studying was hard & our pay was poor- but I think it was a better way. Better pay of course is obvious.
I'm a Nigerian and I'm studying Nursing Science at Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria. I would love to further my career and have my masters in Psychiatric Nursing,Becoming a University Nurse Educator...Go for PHD and other certifications I hope I would be able to contribute to history of Nursing 😊😊❤

I had an important question in regards to Nursing. I have a deep respect for the career, and I am very curious. As someone who has spent a while in Nursing, someone who teaches it, would you say the job is rewarding? I dont mean monetarily, but emotionally. I want to be a nurse, but I have been put off by some of the nurses I have met. A lot of them seem overworked and jaded. They are sorta happy to be nurses, but also seem to be more indifferent to others. Maybe it's just the people I am talking to, but I am curious if you could tell me about the mental toll of Nursing. Things like does it change how you look at others? What kind of person would do best in Nursing? How does seeing different things and doing certain things in Nursing effect your overall outlook on life, people, etc.? How does nursing tend to shape your world view? Has it impacted your life more than some other jobs may (for better or worse)? Thank you, and thanks for the great videos.
Is nursing rewarding....YES! As far as the pay...its is good...But you cannot put a price on helping others, whether it is helping to save their life, giving their medications that they need, up to holding a dying patient's hand. It can be draining...emotionally, physically, and mentally. That's where the nurse has to also take care of themselves, not to work excessively for the money...and eat healthy, exercise, rest...take care of themselves. Just like any job, profession...people can burn out, get tired of it, etc., but one benefit is that you can always chose to work in a different area...sometimes it can be easier...sometimes not. It can change your world view...cause you can see people at their worst times (sick, angry, dying), but also at their best...seeing the human spirit to fight and get healthy...as well as new life being born. That's just my perspective anyways...hope it helps!!!
Thank you for considering me to be a mentor, I am flattered, but it may be more beneficial for you to find a mentor that is local/close to you. One that you can share ideas with, and possible observe you, and closely work with you. I can be a virtual mentor to you, but really recommend someone closer to you.

Hello, as someone who specializes in nursing education, can you tell me a little about what the standards are for nurses who are educated/licensed in one country, but move to another country? Thank you.
Hello there... when attempting to work in the United Stated, a licensed nurse from another country, must take the NCLEX exam (Nursing Exam) in the US for whichever state they are going to work in...each state has their own exam, possibly take and pass and English proficiency exam, and maybe "other" educational requirements may be necessary in order to take the NCLEX. Hope that helps.

Well keep on being a nurse, or becoming a nurse, the change begins with us, then as we care for patients, the patients, their families, who may be somebody influential to help see what nurses do, and then respect them. Sadly, it took a war to finally make people/governments to notice and see what Florence Nightengale (and nurses) were capable of doing.
Sorry I did not cite sources, but I read it in an excerpt from the author Charles Dickens, when I was researching the information. I could not locate the original book phrase, but he does mention the word "wayward" in David Copperfield,, "Let that pass. I have been a grumpy, frumpy, wayward sort of a woman, a good many years".

@@niffernurse... Yes we do use them to assess our patients. Dont you remember that we studied the breath sounds, the terms for that breath sounds?....etc
Actually it’s both… it’s a vocational in its skill set, but is also a profession… due to its skill set and certifications, degrees (associates, bachelors, masters, doctorate), and specialties… as well as recognition as a group with specialized knowledge.
@@NurseMasterCharlieRN The word profession stems from the word profess, to be an expert in your field, ie. Professor. Doctors, attorneys, Clergyman, professors, etc. are professions. They require several elements and most can work independently in their own consultancy / practice without needing employment or working under a doctor or attorney like a paralegal or nurse. Although nurses meet a small number of elements of a profession they are vocations until they can work independently, require masters and above for RN. You will never find any profession listed above with an associates degree. Another field that has a few elements of professional but is still a vocation is law enforcement. Some departments require more qualifications than RN such as a bachelors degree and zero criminal background.

Nursing is not a profession. It is a vocation by definition.
