    What about the maple that you did a trunk chop on?

    Great videos. I’m interested in getting one of your trees. Also I’m wanting to get a Chinese elm, I’ve seen some cheap ones on the internet and would like to get one or two and plant them in the ground to grow the trunks out to 2-3”. Do you have any experience with this or at least some advice on how to proceed. Most I find are from warmer climates than here in central Illinois. If I got one now would I be able to plant it in the spring or have to wait to get it use to my climate. Thanks Rod

      You can email me regarding a tree at bighearts@smalltreesfarm.com. I won't be digging any trees until spring though. Regarding the elm, I don't have much experience with them, but I think that they would not survive the winter in your climate. You would have to dig it each winter and keep it from freezing.

    Welcome back, I enjoyed the cool new intro. Good luck with the new job but ultimately when your tree sale takes off you may want to quit and Bonsai full time. Anyway, great video I love all the project trees. NJ Mike

      Thank you, much appreciated! That would be pretty awesome but we'll take it a day at a time for now. I'm glad you like all that I've got cooking!

    Everything looks great. Curious what zone you’re in. Thanks, and I look forward to buying some of those seedlings.

    Have you ever tryed Japanese black pines or other conifers in the ground?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 года назад +1

      I don't have any experience with conifers. I think that a lot of the techniques I use on trident maples would kill most pines.

      Probably yes but in Japan its common cultivate pines in the ground, check this cool japanese chanel: ruclips.net/channel/UCYQHnD7cuwC5RZ2PqiLpMuw

    Thanks for the update! I have a question about selling trees within the US. Do you know if you need and special permits to ship plants from state to state?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 года назад

      I think that there are a few states with restrictions, but you can ship to the majority of the contiguous US with no problems. I'd have to see if I can find a list of states that restrict shipping, but I've had no issues shipping in the past.

    I was wondering if you have any fungal issues with your maples, like anthracnose and if so how do you treat it. I only have one trident maple, (beside some small seedlings) and I am pretty sure it is anthracnose I am fighting. All last year it struggled with it and this year I made sure to spray it right before bud break and treated with systemic fungicide also. It flushed out good and was looking super healthy until a few days ago and I saw some of the new growth was turning black before the new leaves could get very big at all. Do you have any experience that could help me out? I know you are probably super busy this time of spring but any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

      I don't really have any fungal issues, but daconil would be my go to for anthracnose. Just make sure you have removed any infected leaves or dead branches. Is the soil kept too wet possibly? That could be a sign of root rot or another soil related issue as well, but it is more likely fungal as you said. Isolate the tree from others just in case, and make sure soil is good even if it is fungal. If the tree isn't super healthy it will be more susceptible to infection, and if roots aren't getting enough oxygen that could compromise the tree enough for a fungus to take root. Sorry for being long winded.

      @@smalltrees Thank you for the reply, it is in safe t sorb that tractor supply sells and perlite. I have since stopped using safe t sorb because it breaks down so quickly but it has only been in it one year,. But it does stay a little bit wetter than I would like, the top inch will dry out everyday but if you dig down some, it seems to stay to wet deeper down so you might be on to something. I did just spray with Daconil last night and cut everything off that looked infected. I had sprayed with daconil just before and after bud break and then switched to infuse, (which is a systemic), I should probably stuck with daconil. What would you do about the soil, chance repotting it while in leaf, using better soil or put it in the ground or just watch my watering a little closer until next spring. It is by no means being close to a bonsai, I'm still in growing the trunk phase. Thanks for your time.

    Hi! Where are you located? I was wondering if you sell any of your trees? Do you have a plant catalog or something where I can see your available materials. I'm interested in purchasing some pre bonsai
