Really pleased to see you're publishing vids again! Looks like youve had a great years growth. The nebari on that trident is epic. Look forward to seeing the fusion you've got on your spiral.
Thank you! I never really stopped, I was just busy with work and didn't have a lot to show while the trees were growing. I'll try to think of things to make videos on in future summers. The spiral tree looks good but will have to have some trees replaced in the spring.
I wasted 15 years of growing by not understanding how important the soil mix is to tree and root development. Great video because it shows clearly the advantage. Cheers, Xav
You're absolutely right. My secondary beds that I made this spring grew like crap compared to my other beds because i didn't use the same soil and the watering situation wasn't as good. It is probably the single most important factor that you can control for the health and vigor of your trees.
That would be the dream! Thank you! I'm always on the lookout for new things to try. They're a little like getting a present. You have to wait until you wan work the tree, and then you get a (good or ad) surprise.
This is one of my favorites channels. I have done your methods for 2 years in amates, ulmus, liquidambar and they grows like crazy. Greetings from México!
That makes me really happy! I'm really glad that you've had good success! I've wanted to work with liquidambar but the only one that I have is a volunteer tree that I let grow when it showed up. It's about 6 feet tall now, maybe I should try to work on it!
Amazing video! I just got my first trident maple this week, I mostly grow olive trees but I'm really hyped about trying something new. I also want to build a grow bed this spring and plant some maple seedlings in there. I wanted to ask how deep are your grow beds?
Looks great. I’m going to plant a bed in the spring. Quick question what part of the county do you live in, climate contributes to growth. I’d like to know the difference between you and me, I live in central Illinois. Thanks for the video’s they help to see what can be done.
I wish you good luck! I've found that trees from different zones sometimes need a year or two to acclimate to their new climate, but not really so with seedlings.
It's always such a pleasure to watch your videos mate. I'm going to try and ground grow some tridents best year by following your methods and advice. What sort of position are they in? Do they get full sun all day? I only get morning sun until about 1pm in the summer days. Could that be enough?
What zone are you in? My trees get morning sun until early to mid afternoon, when a large tree behind them gives some shade. I am really glad you like what I'm doing. If you try some of these methods and have a good year of growth, you'll be amazed at the progress.
I’ve commented on your videos, some not too kindly on…trident maple are a great special tree to learn from…make a vide of how to bud pinch as soon as the buds open, how to branch prune for ramification, take the tree through a whole season…..doesn’t have to be the same tree..it’s all in the detail..
I can do that. I don't have any trees that are in the ramification stage because I usually sell them as stock, but I can show those techniques on branches of trees that are still in the ground. Or I might buy a trident that is already potted to use as an example. Either way, I can show those techniques.
Hi trees Your tip tp use an old CD disk to flatten out the roots is genius !!!1 Just a quick ? on another subject My beautiful root over rock bonsai was ruined / eaten at the exposed roots , by a critter during the summer. I will now have to re-plant roots and start all over . Any suggestions to keep varmints away from my trees exposed roots ? thanks in advance
Thank you! Do you have any idea what ate at the roots? You probably wrapped the roots under the ground with raffia. Could you wrap the ones above the soil as well? It wouldn't really stop a mouse or rabbit but it would be easier to tell if something had messed with it. You could also take a plastic pot, cut a hole in the middle and cut a line from there to the top lip of the pot, flip it over, out the trunk of the tree through the hole, and then secure the bottom of the pot however you're able to.
@@smalltrees Thanks i don't know what ate it but probably not a rabbit as i have all my trees elevated on cinder blocks or logs . i love the inverted pot idea. i do have another root over rock that i dearly want to protect now and i am going to do this for the winter season Again thanks for your help and congrats on your YT milestone you deserve it No spiders : (
I buy it from my local baseball team. Are you located in the US? It is pretty expensive, but I played for the team when I was in school and know everyone pretty well so I get it a little cheaper. Other alternatives that are cheaper and more accessible are chicken grit that you can get from some supply stores, or the oil spill cleanup material called Napa floor dry #8822. If you look for that, make sure it has Diatomaceous Earth listed as the ingredient. Otherwise you can look online at places like home depot under the soil amendment category and may be able to find stuff that is very similar to turface, just under a new name.
@@smalltrees Gotcha, thanks a bunch! Another question, how do you repel deer/rabbits? I have some tridents growing but they're always getting eaten and I don't know how to stop it except getting fencing maybe.
I don't really. Early spring is when they are vulnerable to rabbits and all. I have an abundance of both, but I haven't taken many measures against them. Fencing with small holes will work, but it's too much work for me when I'm constantly changing the size of my beds. You could try some mothballs maybe. I think I'm just lucky, I have rabbits and deer in my yard a lot but not much trouble with my trees.
@@smalltrees I see, it's frustrating because it really ends up stunting the tree's growth. Thanks for the advice though, and keep up with the good work!
I've had pretty good success. My failures have been due to not cutting deep or wide enough initially. As long as there is plenty of growth, they usually turn out okay.

That should be good then. A little more sun wouldn't hurt, but that should be enough for goof results.

When do you plant in your beds? I got some cheap planting beds this summer and I'm going to move my trident seedlings into them.
I usually plant in the spring as buds are swelling.
Where can you find turface? Is it expensive to purchase?
