Stephen King wrote in Rose Red: "Houses are alive. This is something we know. News from our nerve endings. If we're quiet, if we listen, we can hear houses breath. Sometimes, in the depth of the night, you can even hear them groan."
A buddy of mine had a big old brick house on his farm that was built in 1905. It was abandoned in the early 80s and was in rough shape like this one. His sisters family ended up completely fixing it up and are living in it today! Would be cool to see something like that happen to this old house.
Oh, how I love your videos! The lack of constant talking makes me almost feel like I'm there with you. I'm glad Garth was able to move and save the barn, and the house isn't yet beyond repair. The frame still looks pretty straight, square and sturdy. 15:40 how strange to see the well right in the house. He must have prospected for water first, and then built the house over the dig. Very resourceful! OOH! And another original octopus-style furnace. That's two in a row! They're almost always long gone. That makeshift shower in the basement was most likely for the workers to clean up before entering the main part of the house. We ladies don't like manure-laden footwear on our floors, you know! lol 21:00 all the phone numbers written on the wall sure bring back memories for me. It's what we did, back in the day. 21:25 Turning the buttons will do nothing. That's a push-button light switch. The button with the white dot is ON, and the black is OFF.
These homes are always much nicer than I imagine a remote prairie home being. The nice window trim w/sills and aprons, skirt boards up the sides of the stairs ....nice attention to details. Good video 👍
How sad. People have no respect. Glad he was able to save the barn! Hopefully he can restore the house. Another nice explore. Love watching your videos and the history you share.
I like how many of the rooms are painted in pale blues and yellows...picking up the colors of the surrounding landscape. It must have been a very pretty home.
Having the house moved and restored something I'd love to see! Not enough are saved, and it's sad to so so many monuments to past lives be erased from the landscape. Was cool to see the barn was saved.
Very well built, much lived in and much loved home. I would save it,too if I could. Nice, interesting story, thank you for a time well spent.😊Happy New Year 2025.
Another excellent video. It’s a pity the local government doesn’t heritage list these old farm houses and at least put a new roof on them to protect them. Thanks for another great video. From mark. Australia. 0:00
For some reason this one seemed friendly to me. In spite of deceased occupant and the strychnine. I think it's the back story of so many families raised there and having good memories.
What an amazing house! I love the colors and the view of the windmill outside was a poignant reminder…for me anyway…of what once was. What stories this house could tell with all the families that once called it home. Was that a dog that had died? I love the sounds as you walk thru and touch things and the crunchy sounds under your feet. I used to go exploring with my dad and it never occurred to me to even think about taking something from the places we went. This place was a gem! Thank you for “saving” it!
@ I’d never have guessed that was a coyote! Are they usually red like that by you? Down here (VT USA) we usually only see them on the grayish side. And you’re welcome for Watching! I find the sights and sounds of your videos really relaxing!

Loved this place if i could id buy it and restore it, so sad for the dog though probably fell through and couldnt get out, so it just lay there and starved very sad. The house has some stories to tell though, with all the life that has been through there, i sure hope someone can restore it to its former beauty and breathe life into it once more before its gone forever.
Great bones in this ol girl!! I hope he finds a way to restore her!! So glad he moved the barn!! Teenagers these days have absolutely no respect …. Thank you for the explore and the history…. I look forward to your videos.. stay safe out there!!
As soon as I saw the pantry and the cellar for the canning jars, I fell in love with the place. The sloped ceilings in the upper bedrooms, nanny's staircase. The natural lighting was incredible and the basement looks so dry. The house has great bones and the floor plan is very inviting. Definitely a renovation worthy of some elbow grease! This home is a beauty with a great vibe in it. You really have a gifted way of capturing the feeling of history 🇨🇦💌
She sure was a beauty in her day! Sad he couldn’t keep the house from being in such terrible shape! Awesome video as always! Thank you for sharing & Happy New Year! 👍👍❤️✊🤘🎆
@secondaryhighway . You must be a researcher. Thanks for the reply. We have a family geneologist who has done remarkable history research. This was a lovely house, built like a true Scotsman would; to last. Best to you and Happy New Year!
Amazing house. So many things that make me imagine what it might have been like to live there. The furnace and phone numbers on the wall. Happy new year from England
You've shown us every part of that house; even the closets. It didn't seem to be in that bad of condition. If I was 20 years younger, I'd like to try and refinish it. I think I even saw a cistern in the basement. Thanks for showing us this house.
Oh I was worried you were going to fall through the floor or into one of those holes in the house, be careful please. ❤ Love these old homesteads. Imagine looking out and seeing nothing else but land and crops, no other civilization. So serene. 😊
Dear The Secondary Highway, Besides me and all members think you deserved a lot more members then you have, i have a little disturbing thingy because i care about you. At the timebar around 10:12 you picked up a can wich contained or does contained Strychnine, keep in mind that you never wear gloves or anything else to protect yourselfs, Strychnine doesn't have a expire date and still is deadly, not only for rodents. Please wear protective items next time you visit those amazing properties in the future because your whole channel loves you about the content you made. You are one of the best on RUclips imo and looking forward for a next great footage, much respect and a happy newyear allready from Netherlands 🙂
Wow hi and thank you. You’re right. I started wearing gloves. You’ll see that in up coming videos. I have about 20 that I’ve shit without gloves. I’ll be sure to start. Thank you! 🙏
Oh to have lived in this house with the robins egg blue, yellow and pink colors contrasting the golden plains. If I had a gazillion dollars I'd restore it to it's original beauty and so many others you show us. Hearty people lived here. Alas, I was born too late. Thank you for sharing! Another thought. Where are the privys?
Merry Christmas and happy new year. I absolutely love your videos. The animal looked like a golden retriever, but hard to tell. It would be so sad if it was a dog to think he was left behind or lost. I absolutely love the set up of this house. I like the pantry leading down to the basement and windows to add light to the basement for canned goods and cold storage, it’s such a shame that they let this house go. I wish someone had kept it up love all your videos.
It looks like the the dog at 27:52 that's under the stairs, the coat looks long and shaggy, doesn't look like a coyote to me. So sad. This would of been a beautiful home in it's time, glad he moved the barn, they don't make them like that anymore, hopefully he can have the house restored as well.
What a beautiful, really well-built home. It's sad young people don't respect other people's property. "Spare the rod, spoil the child" needs to be followed again.
I thought so too at first glance, I thought it looked like a collie. Sad tho, whatever it was. Not sure, but it looked like it might have tried to claw & gnaw its way out ( to the left of animal)
Amazing this house look like original built first in middle then add 2 area in different times wow ……reminds me of my old house which I sold it built in 1913 they add build in back which add kitchen and bathroom there basement have well in there as well
Another great video. I have to say that I agree with the other posters - the animal under the stairs appears to be the dog in the barn moving video. Brown/red with mostly white legs and white tip/underside of the tail. I agree that critters will seek out a private spot to die, whether that be a coyote or a dog. Thanks for doing your excellent work and happy 2025!
The dog you saw under the stairs looks just like the dog in the clip you showed moving the barn. He probably never came home and owner has always wondered what happened to it.
Just found your channel, really interesting houses you have in Canada. I work in TV post production, one thing I'd say is to keep you text up for longer. Usually the rule is reading it 2.5 times, but to be able to read it twice is fine. 👍

@@secondaryhighway I would love to have a basement. I preserve (can) too. What I do have is a cool shed I bought from a neighbor who moved away. Up in the upper goat pasture, under a cedar tree; full of jars & bottles, for me to use for my fruits, dried foraged foods, liquors, spices & tinctures.
Why is there so much trash in there? How did it get there? It looks like this trash has been there a long time. Doesn't look like anyone tried to take care of it at all. So sad.
I do hope youre at least wearing a respirator as youre walking around, stirring up bat guano (rabies) and mouse poop (hanta virus) as you walk! You should probably be wearing gloves for everything you touch as well. And the thing by the phone that you well pulling and twisting was an electrical switch.....push the top one in, the bottom one pops out...completing the circuit. Oh, and that poor collie dog.....(looks more like a collie coloring than a coyote) and it appears like he chewed a hole in the wood before starvation took him. How was THAT allowed to happen?!? Ugh
