    The idea and approach is similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, and as an absolute fan of traditional baseball, I would unquestionably go to a Savannah Bananas game if it came to SLC.

      Aww the old addage that has been repeated about a billion times by simpletons. It isn't about not wanting people to have fun. It is about things like the honor and pride, and yes, tradition, within the game. Baseball is a beautiful sport not because of showboating and antics, but because it is pure. This is something that seems to be way over the heads of the feeble-minded. Baseball doesn't need to be full of arrogance and a "me" culture. We already have the NBA and NFL. We shouldn't have to "just get them out" in order for people to act like they have a slight bit of humility.

    Having been to a lot of Red Sox games I was really shocked and surprised when I went to a KBO game in Seoul Korea. It’s basically the same rules as MLB, but each team has their own band and cheerleaders.
    And when your team is at bat the band and cheerleaders are singing songs. And all the fans knew the songs. So everyone in the stands was cheering and singing. While the cheerleaders danced and sang on top of the dugout.
    And when the away team was at bat their band and cheerleaders would sing their songs. It was legit the best time I’ve had at a baseball game.
    Not to mention the food at these parks is outrageously good. Like legit food truck, or street stall food that’s delicious.
    The cherry on top. They sell beer in 40oz plastic containers (they give you cups to use) and the trick was to get 2, empty them and then bang them together while singing the songs.
    It was a blast.

      I’ve heard that Korean baseball games are a thrill, likewise I’ve heard the same about Japanese games as well.
      I haven’t been there, however I have had a great baseball experience in Latin America. The baseball games in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and even Mexico are something else. Which I believe the MLB should learn from or take notes from.
      The atmosphere there is amazing, they also have cheerleaders, they have live bands playing and like you mention, the food at Latin American baseball games are appetizing.
      I’m not saying that baseball needs to copy what foreign baseball leagues are doing, however they should definitely take note and make a plan to allow for a more immersive fan experience at a baseball game.

      You're absolutely right. I live in China and because of the time zones I can't watch all MLB games, so I watch KBO games instead and they're really fun to watch, not only the competition level is decent but the atmosphere is great and fun yo watch/hear. Some football teams in Korea struggle to draw spectators because the casual sport fans prefer going to a baseball game and enjoy the atmosphere even though in theory a football match would be shorter and more exciting to watch.

    I wouldn't say the future of baseball, but one rule definitely stands out as an amazing addition to the MLB if their brave enough to add it. And that rule is the ability to steal first. It's so simple yet puts pressure on the Pitcher and Catcher to keep it contained that I think would be huge. The last MLB game I watched I counted 12 pass balls that the catchers on both teams just didn't care enough to block cause there was no one on.

    It isn't really baseball, but it could be something fun for non-baseball fans/ young kids to enjoy. Real baseball is a boring sport but it doesn't need to be changed just to accommodate peoples' dwindling attention spans.

    • @ggi5658
      @ggi5658 2 года назад +11

      I agree with most of what you said. But baseball isn't boring for those of us who are true fans, understand the game well and have faithfully followed the sport at the highest level for many years, decades even.
      My take though... if you don't know the difference between a slider and a change up, between a screwball and a forkball, or distinguish a two-seam and a four-seam fastball... or don't know what ballparks in MLB are hitter-friendly or pitcher-friendly, or why sometimes a game turns out low-scoring and other times it's a marathon...; or If you don't know what's a pass ball or what's a wild pitch or what's catcher's interference..., or whether a batter is a power hitter or a slap-hitting speedster... or whether this or that pitcher is good against right-handed hitters or against southpaws... or hundreds, perhaps thousands, other little game-related things here and there -- let's not even get into baseball language and terminologies..., then you are not going to like baseball, and will probably find it too 'slow' or too 'boring'.
      Baseball is like any other sport. You have to get to know the players and what they can do in order to know what's going on. You must get to learn the venues, and follow the action from playball in the spring to the last day of the playoffs. And then stay informed on what happens during the dead season (free agent sigups and trades) and follow your favorite team, or the entire league if you are a diehard fan like me. That's how you GET INTO THE GAME of any given sport and how you you end up loving it. Otherwise, you'll feel lost and will probably want to leave the game, or switch the channel if you are watching it from home. Believe me... I feel the same way when I watch say soccer or hockey. I'm sure those are great sports too. But I just can't get into the game because I don't know the ins-and-outs of those sports and those leagues to really know what's going on in a fly. Like I mentioned, if you don't know what's going on when yoou go to a game or watch it on TV, you just won't be able to get into the game to want to continue watching after a few minutes. But I'm sure that if I became more familiarized w/ the players and the stats (baseball btw is all about the stats) and the venues, etc..., I would probably not find those otger sports slow and boring just as other people find baseball slow and boring.
      I do agree though that MLB does need to shrink the action time a bit (since it's a game without a clock) in order for those that find it too long or too slow, to have a reason to stay in the stadium; or to have the motivation to go to the stadium. Do I think professional baseball players need to totally make clowns of themselves to accomplish this? Not at all. Do I think they need to completely change the game to make it faster or "funner" ? Absolutely not! They can implement subtle changes that will not mess up or ridicule the game that true baseball fans love. They can implement slight changes to modernize, if you will, the favorite pastime that we've known for the past two centuries or so. But if they insist in changing the game radically..., to the point of making it more like a circus instead of a professional sport (just to please the few and to attempt to gain more following), then baseball as we know it might just come to an end in year 2042 like the folks at Star Trek depict in the beloved sci-fi show.
      I only know one thing, though... I would not pay to watch a bunch of guys dancing and clowning around for as fun it might be, coz I'm sure it is quite amusing. I want to see real MLB action with real professional players and real talent; not boy cheerleaders dancing and flipping around with their pants down.

      @GGI565, your explanation is spot on. I, myself, am an avid baseball traditionalist. High sock, stirrups, pitchers bat, all that jazz. To me, this isn't baseball, it's a circus, and while circuses can be fun and entertaining, they don't hide what they are behind a bat and ball. Playing against this team would be unbearable and I would never pay to see them play except to maybe take my niece and nephew once or twice. That all being said, they clearly aren't targeting the demographic that you and I are in and I think that's perfectly fine. It's unlikely these dudes will ever see the light of the Show so they're making the best of things and having fun and putting smiles on people's faces. I was originally pissed off by this video until I read your comment and I see it through a new perspective. Thanks!

      It's obvious that you guys are passionate about baseball. However, like it or not, leagues such as MLB, the NBA, NFL and the NHL exist because people are sitting in the seats or watching on a screen. There is trouble when World Series game between the Astros and Nationals got lower ratings than the NFL Chiefs vs Packers game on the same night in 2019. Football has been unafraid to make rule changes to keep the game interesting and has done so continually over the years. To be sure, I'm glad to see baseball making some changes, such as finally having the DH for both leagues, adding a "ghost runner" in extra innings, etc. (I know the purists hate that one). A step in the right direction. Radical changes, such as the Savannah Bananas are doing? Highly unlikely, but a couple of their ideas (no stepping out of the batter's box and no visits to the mound) would certainly speed up the game. Would I pay to see a Savannah Banana game? Yes. The notoriety may not last, but it sure as hell looks entertaining. That's what people pay to see.

    I'd really appreciate if the MLB added a ban or limit on stepping outta the batter's box for sure. I remember playing a game with friends where we had to get up and do jumping jacks every time someone was out of the box. Most exhausted I've ever been.

    This will never be the future of baseball. But, there is a place for this outside of the affiliated ball. It’s like the globetrotters, no one is going there to see high level basketball , but the entertainment is very high level, which would bring traffic to the sport maybe as a whole.

    As a baseball fan since 1955, I am more traditional. I don’t mind games that go more than 3 hours. To me it’s free baseball. It seems the only people complaining about long baseball games are the players and sports announcers and writers! They are not getting paid by the hour, so they don’t like it. I hate the hold up 4 fingers and walk a guy, put a guy on second to start extra innings and absolutely hate the DH, so disappointed when the National League adopted that crappy rule! Where Major League Baseball is going wrong is trying to bring in new fans by making it faster. All they are doing is chasing away the fans that have always loved the game!

  • @Invalidspin
    @Invalidspin 2 года назад +1

    I love how everyone is having fun, but this seems a little too goofy to be taken seriously. It's too bad MLB can't lighten up a little more. I like the idea of shortening games, but making a circus out of baseball is really no different than the Globetrotters. Cute concept, but...
