I do not care what people say, I disagree with this stuff- a woman has her entire adult life to have spray tans and wear false lashes, one of the most beautiful things about children is their natural - and it is important in todays society that young girls know that beauty isnt just the outside and life isnt about that- this is instilling the wrong idea. Just my opinion but this is the future generation and I know a lot of young girls who think if they dont look a certain way they are ugly.
+(My-Anne) I think a 5 year old can choose and enjoy being in pageants. Unfortunately most are forced and I think we can both agree that forcing a child to do a pageant is wrong.
The only issue I have with child beauty pageants is that the participants, who are usually female, are held to a standard of adult beauty. You have little girls marching out in bikinis and wearing more make-up than most adult fashion models, which I find a little disturbing. The pageants themselves are fine, but the adult standards the children are judged by rings of child sexualization to me, especially in glitz pageants. At least in natural pageants, the children look like children instead of the grown-up idealization of children.
why I am against pageants... 1. early upbringing in a attention dense setting brings the child to depend on attention for normal psych. 2. Waste of money, could be spent on college. 3. Why are the girls wearing pageant dresses if they are obviously not in a pageant. 4. You are teaching them that normal childhood curiosity and mistakes are not acceptable.(missing teeth, climbing trees, playing tag.) 5. The child is not fully aware to make these conscious decisions that will obviously have an effect on their future psych.
I got a spray tan of the exact same kind when I was 15 or 16 and it scared the hell out of me! The sound is horrible and you feel like you're being gassed (even though fake tan is mostly made of sugar) because you can't breathe properly. I can only imagine what it'd be like when you're that young.
I love how these little kids that have barely learn to use the bathroom alone are capable of "making decisions" like giving tyra a gift...let alone if they want to be in pageants
I entered my 1 yr old in the Hawaiian Tropic Pageant in 2005 in which she won a trophy for "Beautiful Hair" with a $10 outfit from Walmart. She still loves looking at that trophy! That's the only one we've ever done & we had a great experience! The rules specifically stated that make-up NOT be used on the children & that they wanted them looking like real kids. Toddlers & Tiaras is a totally different type of pageant & I sure would feel out of place esp since our tans are ones we were born with.
It's not a child's decision if the mother is subliminally teaching her daughter that beauty earns money and it should be valued higher than education, independence, etc. This is sickening. Babies wearing veneers and sexualized stripper-esque costumes. THIS IS WHY WE ARE BEHIND IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS NATIONALLY. We teach little girls not to learn and form their own interests but to look pretty to win prizes and be wanted by boys. Moms are taking their children's childhood away and trading it for an adult image to fulfill their sick desires. This needs to change.
The candy rose part was added to start talking about the teeth flippers in an organic way nobody can change my mind. And to make tyra look good by being all like "oh I like your natural teeth with your gaps!" No way I would bring my child to the tyra show to have her rip apart my parenting
The only thing I remember when I was a kid, was playing with my friends, watching cartoons, and drawing. I only wore make-up once in junior high. I didn't fully wear make-up until I started high school.
Dec 4, 2010 WAW California Starz Beauty Pageant is open to girls and boys, babies, Children, Pre-Teens, & Teens from all areas. WAW California Starz Beauty Pageant winners will receive Savings Bonds, Trophies, Sashes, Crowns, Cash and many surprise prizes!!!
I was in pageants since i was 4 months old until now. I CHOSE to do it. my mother never made me. I stuck to it till this day. I love it! Dont blame it on the parents. I turned out just fine!
I've said it on other videos and I'll say it again here. These girls are not only being taught that they need to be beautiful and that they need to win, but they are also being taught that their personality, intelligence, and talent is something they need to prove to please others. They will have a hard time being happy as adults without constant attention and positive reinforcement because they've spent their whole lives competing for judges who decide their worth as a person.
@TheDellanator what make up usually you wear when you go to school? included eyeliner & eye shadow? I'm curious, because most of schools in my country that I know don't even allow high school students to wear make-up, have second hole in one ear, included highlight/colouring hair.
I've done research on it. if you've ever watched the shows like "Toddlers and Tiaras", some little girl cries in some parts of the show almost every episode. I'm not speaking from experience (although when I was 4, I was in dance classes but I wanted to do that and most of the girls in my age group wore make up for a recital but I did not b/c mom knew I was too young. and no we did not wear skimpy outfits like the ones displayed on the girls in "Dance Moms" or "Toddlers and Tiaras")
What a great way to teach your daughters to be superficial at a YOUNG young age. There are other ways to be proud of your kids and to build their confidence. Not parading them around on a stage like a trophy.
@monicannabella I like the way you put it. You are right. These girls are 5 years old. They are babies! They should not be worrying about all these stuff.
i used to be in beauty pageants when i was young in Armenia and i won Miss Armenia. and i started at about 4 years old. but i moved to America when i was 5 and i had to stop and I'm 12 now.
I think these beauty pageants are great. I was in pageants, and i want my kids in pageants. It makes little girls feel beautiful, you make friends, and unlike what most people think, they get downgraded for being too revealing, & they absolutely learn that there ARE other girls that will be better looking, and worse looking. & to realize, that other people see beauty in different girls. Cheesy or not, it's true. It's not as terrible as TV makes it look.
completely agree . it teaches kids vice instead of value and morals . being spoiled like that only has the outcome of being bratz and worse in the future .
I love Tyra's questions to the girls... the answer was so obvious. I doubt any child would come up with the idea of doing pageants if their parents had not tried to force that first.
As a child I did dance and ballet, so whenever we did performances we had the outfits and the makeup...and I liked it for a while. I was put into dancing at 2 and then stopped when I was 8....Simply because I grew bored with it and even though my mom threatened to force me, I clearly let her know--it'd be a waste of our time and her money if she did b/c I didn't want to do it.
I think it's sooo cute ! And i wish my mom would have put me in them when i was younger ! I understand how people could think it sends the wrong message but i like them. I think the child should only do it if they truely like it !
I think pagents are great. It helps with confidence and I love total glitz even though my sister loves natural. It helps with so much more than people know, you win and loose in it and its a great way to build confidence and if you think about it a lot of things kids are in are just like pagents. Like dance or cheerleading can get expensive and you have to wear certain costumes and makeup and theres a winner and looser. Not that big of a difference.
i usually don't like people like this tyra or whoever did the top model thing, cause when i listen to them talk about looking beautiful and stuff, they always talk about "well, it just looks better when...". they say they love natural beauty, yet they wear make-up everyday. so at first i was worried to watch this, but i'm happy to see that even she thinks this is too much and too young.:D that made me happy
I was in beauty pagents up to when I was 9 y/o and I hated it. I would offen travil all around Sweden (I live in Sweden) ,Europe and sometimes even N.America. I would be gone up 3 mouths and I never got to have any-friends. It was pain-ful having to get tans, wax ect. and I beged my mum get out of it and when I almost 10 y/o My mum got me out and I was soooo happie.
I remember doing these, winning the ultimate grand supreme was always my favorite thing to do. It was not easy because as myself starting at 2, I did cry and throw fits as well because all I wanted to do was go home and watch curious George, I stopped at the age of 11
@princesskemi16 They are NOT being forced to do this! Most parents of girls in pageants would be fine if their child stopped competing. It's no different than a child crying before soccer practice and the parent making the child go to soccer practice.
Because they're not the same thing. I grew up doing ballet shows and yes, we got our hair and makeup done for "The Nutcracker" but we saw it as transforming into a character, getting dance steps right, and contributing to a show, rather than focusing on looking beautiful.
@pinkbinks Yes, the parents do introduce their children to pageants. However, you will probably introduce your little girl to soccer, cheerleading, softball, dance, or a multitude of other activities. Does this make it wrong for your child to participate and have fun simply because YOU introduced them to it and it wasn't their decision initially? If the child can say she is having fun doing WHATEVER activity they are involved in whether it be soccer or pageants, why take that away from them?
I agree. The mom is trying to absolve her own self from any guilt by saying "It's her decision". Parents should make decisions for kids until they are mature enough to make their own decisions.
@mrv963 ok, I was obviously joking w/ the last part of that comment but I just wanted to say that our one & only experience was a FUN one & no make up or hairspray was ever used (only on myself). I do pagents, but I'm 14,I do my own makeup,I think pale is the new tan,and I do my own hair, and it's my choice. Some of the little girls are forced to do it.....it's quite sad.
@alyssacb27 what kind of "pretty dolls" have you grown up with? they look like a 18 year old in a tiny kids' body. plus, when i was a kid, i played softball. fun right? it was till mom got involved and wanted me to be the best. then i hated it, but i continued played for 6 more years "b/c i had fun" not "b/c i had to". when i look at these girls, it just reminds me of my kid years: you only agree so they don't get angry and start yelling and hitting you.
@redsqueamish In my case, my mom actually didn't introduce her to it. Bayleigh (my sister) found them herself. My mom was originally 100% against them, but then decided to try. She still doesn't like them, but has grown to tolerate them because of my sister. My sister had to beg for two years to get my mom to put her in one. So not in every case.

I think I would have liked to do this as a kid. I was always performing, loved it when I got attention from everyone and loved dressing up. Though, is this a Southern thing?
@SuperAsiannation i agree its going to make the girls skin look older at earlier age, but i think asian womens skin stays beautiful for a different reason than that they only start using make up after 20. asian women just naturally have good skin that doesn't get wrinkles even at 30 years old
that was hilarious when they pulled out the flippers i love the show, but the parents are crazy. all of them say it teaches them self confidence and they love pagents. Story looks pretty with no makeup and light makeup, but looks SCARY with full makeup. I know all that was random, but yea!
i do pageants, and i admit some mothers are crazy. the motheres who start their kids out at 1 or two are usually insane. when i started out my mother almost didn't let me, she hates them. she still hates pageants to this day, but i like them and i go with my aunt and we both compete. i made alot of friends and ive been to lots of different places around the usa. I do natural to medium glitz pageants. i did a high glitz pageant once and it was tto much make-up. I like to be me, not a barbie.
A child that young doesn't know what she wants. She is simply agreeing with what her mother says. It promotes low self esteem - it's such an aesthetically focused environment, you kind of get the impression all they're going to be instilled with in life is that being beautiful, hair, make up, shoes and dresses is the only thing that makes a person - when its not.

Just my opinion but this is the future generation and I know a lot of young girls who think if they dont look a certain way they are ugly.
The problem is… here aren’t as many opportunities for adult women to compete in pageants, at least not at an entry level.
five year olds can't make descions like this. They are mentally uncabable. I can't be the only one to know this
She would say yes it a big game of dress up to her probably
+(My-Anne) I think a 5 year old can choose and enjoy being in pageants. Unfortunately most are forced and I think we can both agree that forcing a child to do a pageant is wrong.

6. Creepy pedophiles.
I was a little pageant and I def see it
😂 but my mom wasn’t that crazy crazy

i like how tyra handled this... she probably had a very strong opinion but she was very very subtle showing it
so cute.

tyra needs to bring that little girl from toddlers & tiaras who is obsessed with beyonce on her show

@TheDharmawheel tanning doesnt have harsh chemicals, it has anti aging ingrediants, and basically is just sugar and water
aww the little girl cried in the tanning thing :(
im going to do my first pageant in december and wanted to know if once you make the flipper do they last longer than one pageant~!!!!!
So true. These are children and should be allowed to be just that. That time doesn't last long.
completely agree .
it teaches kids vice instead of value and morals .
being spoiled like that only has the outcome of being bratz and worse in the future .
These girls wear more makeup and accessories than I ever have and I am 22 years old.
This was today's ep? Dang you upload fast.
the moms are probably like OMG THROW THAT CHOCOLATE UP RIGHT NOW! right when they got of the show
@VanessaDipasquale im from london & im running in a beauty pageant and im up for public voting and i wanted to no if you have any tips/advice
I love Tyra's questions to the girls... the answer was so obvious. I doubt any child would come up with the idea of doing pageants if their parents had not tried to force that first.

Why destroy a child’s childhood with fake tanning , makeup and a fake Barbie doll smile
I think it's sooo cute ! And i wish my mom would have put me in them when i was younger ! I understand how people could think it sends the wrong message but i like them. I think the child should only do it if they truely like it !

I LOVE beauty pageants :)
I've been in 15 and lost 2.
Putting a 5 year old in a tanning booth!!!!! REPUGNANT!
Its spray tan. I mean I wouldn't do it to my kids but you're making it sound like they were in a tanning bed with UV Ray's
when tyra asked the audience "you guys wana see the girls?", I wonder what would happen, if they all went.. "nooooo" :P
Can the kids just don pageant without makeup and and tanning?
OMG LEXIE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!
Because they're not the same thing. I grew up doing ballet shows and yes, we got our hair and makeup done for "The Nutcracker" but we saw it as transforming into a character, getting dance steps right, and contributing to a show, rather than focusing on looking beautiful.

@toffee4 how did she develop self esteem issues from the pageants? did she lose?
Severe culture shock for me *almost* everytime i watch stuff from the states lol
at 4:30 when tyra when "lal lal lal" referring to the gaps she had in her teeth, she reminded me of the annoying orange
Just a general question, are Beauty Pageants more of a southern thing?
I agree with you!
I do pagents, but I'm 14,I do my own makeup,I think pale is the new tan,and I do my own hair, and it's my choice. Some of the little girls are forced to do it.....it's quite sad.
omfg , this is sick
@alyssacb27 what kind of "pretty dolls" have you grown up with? they look like a 18 year old in a tiny kids' body. plus, when i was a kid, i played softball. fun right? it was till mom got involved and wanted me to be the best. then i hated it, but i continued played for 6 more years "b/c i had fun" not "b/c i had to". when i look at these girls, it just reminds me of my kid years: you only agree so they don't get angry and start yelling and hitting you.

Who were on wife swap? Are the episodes here in youtube? Can somebody please tell me?
look people, everyone has there own oppinion stop trying to change theirs if u have nothing good to say dont say it at all u have no right to judge!
this is sick
@Iriseandsing yes because they are insecure and they want to feel better through the kids
@Viper194 You are lucky to have a mum like that. She's 100% right!
I used to be a pageant girl when I was two and i quit at around four years old. I turned out fine, not spoiled or bitchy. The only thing it changed in me is my confidence which has been brought up higher thanks to pageants. They also bring up opportunities like modeling and acting agencies and jobs so i dont see why they are so evil in the eyes of people.
that is just crazy
@Denali567 i was like that when i started, but my mom was ok with them. im a natural(no flippers, tanning,or hair peices) i love pageants!
That is exactly what I was thinking:)
beauty pageants are all right as long as the kid likes to do them
I think I would have liked to do this as a kid. I was always performing, loved it when I got attention from everyone and loved dressing up.
Though, is this a Southern thing?
@SuperAsiannation i agree its going to make the girls skin look older at earlier age, but i think asian womens skin stays beautiful for a different reason than that they only start using make up after 20. asian women just naturally have good skin that doesn't get wrinkles even at 30 years old
@BaileyyGonzales thank you!!! the truth!
that was hilarious when they pulled out the flippers
i love the show, but the parents are crazy. all of them say it teaches them self confidence and they love pagents. Story looks pretty with no makeup and light makeup, but looks SCARY with full makeup. I know all that was random, but yea!
