For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist Bette Midler; backing vocalists Gail Kantor, Melissa Manchester, and Merle Miller; guitarist Dickie Frank; bassist Michael Federal; drummer Kevin Ellman; and pianist Barry Manilow.
Just wish there was a vid of this BRILLIANT performance! Just sent it to my niece who is literally just...'Going to the Chapel'...Hope it all goes well for her.Sadly I couldn't be there but it is a great song to listen to and imagine all of the lovely occasion.
I haven't played the album in how I don't know how long . When it got to chappel of love the album version isn't the same as the single . Which is generally the case . Great to hear the single version . Now I have to hear the Dixie cups ❤❤❤Sydney Australia 🦘🦘🦘 17/3/2024
This is weird considering years ago when I was in a connection with my twin he came to visit me in my home town and was staying at a air b n b near by. It looked like a chapel and he even sung the line to me going to the chapel and were going to get married. He smiled at me all I did was pull a face and felt awkward and gave a nervous laugh. Haven't heard that song since he sung that to me and even asked me what did I think of his surname if I liked it. I was confused by his question because he wasn't really clear about what he was asking just did I like his surname and what did I think of it.
I wouldn't give anybody flack for preferring this version over the original. The vocals and the musical arrangement are certainly more dynamic and polished. However, for me, that puts it at odds with the sentiments of the song which, as I interpret the lyrics, is about a naïve teenager dreaming about her wedding day. The plaintive simplicity of the original, sung by actual teenagers, makes more sense to me. But I still love me some Bette Midler, who was being as campy as all get-out with her interpretation.
Yes, she couldn't sing it any other way but CAMP, being BETTE. But the energy is more enthusiastic than the original version. She sounds excited to go to the Chapel they really didn't. The harmonies are killer and the bass is rockin'
Totally agree!!! The song was never meant for the Dixie Cups.... Spector co-wrote it with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Pretty sure he meant it for his Ronettes...but it ended up with The Dixie Cups. Spector was nuts... Originally? It was recorded by Darlene Love & The Blossoms in 1963
Let me tell you all about this song . Bette told me she did not like the way this turned out at all ...she wanted to do it better and the movie the rose . Bette spent most of her day with me at sunset sound studios in los Angeles California on august 5th 1980... .

I love Bette Midler. I went to a vintage place recently and got one of her CD’s for just a dollar! 💕
I'm getting married next month at a LITTLE chapel and have been looking for this version for awhile!!
Best wishes!! ❤️❤️

This cover has all the hope and joie de vivre that the original recording lacked. I love this.

I never knew she sang this song so wonderful 👌👍
LOVE this cover... Bette adds a jaunty flair to a rather ploddy, draggy song

Couldn't agree more, but this has a better beat to dance to.

Hopefully they play at my wedding
I'll probably get flack for saying this, but I actually prefer this version to the one by The Dixie Cups.
Michael Glickman yup
You won't get flack from me! The Divine Miss M's version is so superior, it doesn't even register on the superiority scale :)
