- Today, I'm diving into a real discussion on Demodex mites and how they cause redness and irritation to your eyelashes. Yes, you heard that right! These microscopic critters love to make themselves at home in your eyelids and lashes, and you probably never even knew it. Let's talk about the Demodex mite who too small to see with the naked eye.
Meet Demodex: Your Uninvited Eyelash Guest 🦠
The demodex mite lives on the lash follicles of your eyes. Everyone has a few of these tiny party crashers living on our lids and lashes. It's perfectly normal! Learn more about this condition, Demodex blepharitis, here.
But here's the kicker: sometimes, these uninvited guests become over populated on your eyelashes, and that can lead to symptoms like irritation, redness, watering, lash thickening, and itching at the base of the lashes.
Until recently, we didn't have much in our arsenal to adequately treat the Demodex overgrowth. This summer, there was FDA approval for a brand-new superhero prescription medication, and it goes by the name "Xdemvy."
Xdemvy: The Demodex Terminator 💥
Xdemvy is a prescription eyedrop, designed to be the ultimate Demodex destroyer. You use the drop twice a day for six weeks. After just two life cycles of the mite, and the irritation, itching, and redness is gone.
Now, before you grab your coat and head to the pharmacy, there's a tiny catch. Xdemvy is prescription-only, so you'll need to visit your eye doctor to get your hands on it. Once the bottle of medication reaches you, it's all about using the medication as directed, twice a day, for six weeks. It's like a mini-mite eviction notice, and those critters won't stand a chance.
A Little Sting, A Lot of Relief 🌟
There are a few side effects of Xdemvy that I want to make you aware of. Approximately 10% of the participants in the FDA trial experienced some stinging and burning when they applied the medication. But when you're dealing with red, irritated eyes and persistent itching at the lash base, a little sting may be a small price to pay for Demodex-free relief.
So, if you suspect that your eyelashes might be housing more uninvited guests than you'd like, don't worry. Reach out to your eye care provider, and let them know what's been bugging you. They can help determine if Xdemvy is the right Demodex-busting treatment for you.
CONCLUSION
Demodex mites might be small, but their presence can be felt in a big way. Thanks to Xdemvy, you can now send them packing and enjoy clear, comfortable, and Demodex-free eyes. It's time to say goodbye to those microscopic gatecrashers and hello to lash perfection! Schedule an appointment with your eye care provider to find out more.
My insurance wouldn’t pay for it but Xdemvy applied a manufacturer’s coupon to it and I paid $30.00 for it today.
Any advice regarding pillowcase management while on the drug?
no mention that this drug costs $1700 for a bottle the size of a thumb huh. That's disgusting.
This is a newly approved drug. It does take several months for insurance plans to add it to their formularies. You can work with your eye care provider to find out the best way for you to get the medication. Tarsus Pharmaceuticals does have a Patient Assistance Program to help cover the cost of the drug.
I paid over TWO THOUSAND $$ for one bottle - such a rip off. BIG PHARMA GREED!!!! helped for the first two weeks and now i'm dealing with swollen shut eyes. the brochure said they have tested it on rats....not humans. BIG PHARMA IS NOT OUR FRIEND!
I dont understand how one drop will get into my lash line. Feels dry there
Was wondering the same thing and hve to start eye drops next week
Hello! Do you know if I can buy this in Europe ?
Would it be advisable to use an antibiotic in conjunction with the XDEMVY?
I don’t use an antibiotic with Xdemvy. Getting rid of the mites can remove most of the staph bacteria. It would be on a case by case basis. But, you could always add an antibiotic if there is enough staph to treat.
Is this coming to Europe also? Desperately need it
Sorry, I don’t know when it will be available in Europe.
