    Re: Sponsorship
    I want to apologize to those who expressed concern with my partnership with Pique tea. I have to be honest, when I was approached to partner with them to discuss these two teas (matcha and turmeric), I had already tried these two, but was completely unfamiliar with the rest of their line or any other claims they make on their website. The information I did share wasn’t woo and is evidence based (re: antioxidant levels in matcha and turmeric). None of this makes a tea magic, and I would never pretend like it does, but there are well documented benefits to getting some of these unique polyphenols in the diet. I’m a dietitian, I’m allowed and I do often speak to these benefits. Also on a personal note, if I can get in more water and cut back on my coffee intake right now (which is not so good for my insomnia tbd), and do it quickly and conveniently - then I am all for it.
    But I chose to discuss these two particular teas in the partnership because I genuinely enjoy them. Having said that, I should have checked my blind spots and look into the verbiage used on the website to sell some of their other products that I don’t even know anything about. Obviously, you would not see me promote any detox tea or weight loss tea or anything else problematic like that. These two SKUs however are tasty to me and are nutrient-dense so it was a partnership that made sense to me.
    Yes, I do understand that this is a premium product since the ingredients are typically more expensive and the way its processed and packaged for convenience carries added price. I understand that is not accessible to everyone, and I should have honestly considered that. I regret that I didn’t.
    But at its core, there is nothing problematic, “detoxy”, or “magic” about these two products or the claims I made about them. They’re just two convenient and tasty teas with the bonus that they do have some health benefits.
    I hope you know that I continue to have a critical eye out for misinformation and that the specific products I do partner with and promote are ones I genuinely use and like.
    Also if drinking tea isn’t your jam, here are a few recipes I use turmeric and matcha in food:

      @@B_27 totally fair criticism , and something for me to 100% consider better for future. It was admittedly an oversight on my part as I was already using these products after having them sent to me she’s ago. I wasn’t even aware of the fasting claims on the website as I only looked at the information for these two teas I tried. But agree, that type of language IS problematic and definitely not something I would agree to say on behalf of a tea. I always considered the legitimacy of the specific statements I say about a product, plus whether or not it’s something I enjoy or would feed my family but this has been a good reminder to consider other angles when partnering with a brand as well! I’m still learning so thanks for your patience.

      I disagree to some extent. If you only talk about weight loss for health reasons but not weight gain for health reasons, you're fat phobic. There are tons of people who suffer from anorexia and bulimia who are dangerously skinny and they need to gain weight (just one example of people who need to gain weight for health reasons). Those patients are more at risk than obese patients. Those two eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all eating disorders, binging included. So if your only problem is people who "need" to lose weight, you're not pro-health. If you include dangerously skinny people in your conversation and how they need to gain weight, you can call yourself pro-health. I've never heard him talk about this side of the problem/conversation, so if you have links to videos where he talks about it, that would be great. But if he doesn't, he seems very much fat phobic.

      @@CreativeCookie94 I agree that he could be more inclusive in the way you suggest. However. Health is not just about being dead or alive. I am not saying this to minimize the struggles of those suffering from restrictive EDs. I am saying this because being significantly overweight effs up your body and therefore quality of life in a multitude of ways, starting with your bones and joints, but also diabetes type 2, and such. Considering how many more people are serverely overweight than severely underweight, I feel it is justified to generally pay more attention to weight LOSS for health. Acknowledging an overall trend doesn’t take away from the experiences and needs of those that this overall trend doesn’t apply to.

    • @CreativeCookie94
      @CreativeCookie94 3 года назад +39

      @@Iwasjustwondering89 I kind of agree but I think you need to do some research on those restrictive eating disorders if you believe they benefit your bones and joints or your body in general. If you don't eat or make yourself throw it all up, you don't get enough nutrients your body absolutely needs to be healthy and function properly. Also, not everyone who suffers from those EDs is severely underweight, that's a misconception. It's just easier to see when they're that skinny. There are people who seem to be at a healthy weight but in reality they're anorexic or bulimic. It takes a long time to "look" that way, you don't get there within weeks. On top of that not everyone who suffers from those EDs will end up looking like that even if they've been suffering from the mental illness (because that's really what it is) for years or even decades. We really need to stop judging people by the way they look. Eating habits and lifestyle are way more important to determine health. You can be overweight without eating everything you see. Happened to me. Didn't get even close to enough sleep for over a year, tried intermittent fasting which stressed my body even more and made me develop insulin resistance which made me gain weight even though I wasn't eating more than usual. My body just couldn't handle the carbs anymore and that made me gain weight. A lot of people have undiscovered health conditions that can affect their weight, or they have to take medication that makes them gain weight, genetics, too much stress, not enough sleep etc. Telling someone to simply lose weight, isn't the best thing if you haven't checked for those things. I'm not saying that's what Dr. Mike does! I don't know because I've never been his patient, I was talking in general now.

    As a psychology student I also have to respectfully disagree with your comments about adherence. Saying that most diets fail because of low adherance is not the same as shaming people for not succeeding in changing their behavior, it is just rightfully acknowledging that behavioral changes are extremely hard. Generally people think that they are way more in control of their behavior than they actually are and that kind of thinking dismisses a whole slew of psychological mechanisms that control a large portion of our behavior. Habits, self-efficacy, values, locus of control, internal and external motivation are only a few examples of factors that govern a lot of our behavior which are very difficult to change.
    My main point is: Pointing to genetic factors as the sole reason that people are unable to lose weight is both an incomplete explanation and unnecessary, because people shouldn't blame themselves for not always being completely in control of the way they think and act in the first place.

    • @ga2781
      @ga2781 3 года назад +57

      Well said. There are many reasons why people struggle to lose weight. Yes biology (which includes genetics) plays a huge part. But so does the psychology component (which relates to behaviour change but also navigating dealing with negative emotions). I hate the oversimplified genetics explanation which offers a very fixed mindset approach to the argument, and IMO instead of empowering people just victimises them. Instead, by talking about the challenges both biology and psychology pose but also trying to give people the best tools to navigate them, we can create an environment where people can be both empowered to change but also self compassionate enough not to treat failure with blame.

      I wonder how it's relevant that you are a psychology student? Anyhow, as adherence is something you, as an individual, have. So saying that people fail because of lack of adherence is if anything blaming them. Also speaking of biology and behaviour there's no such thing as telling those things appart, but obviously eating is a basic need we have so eating fewer calories than you need to keep your current weight goes against that. I ended up with a DVT about seven years later at 250 pounds. Turns out, I have a genetic mutation that causes blood clots! Did my weight help the problem? No it didn’t, but it also wasn’t the cause of my issue. Going to the doctor is scary for bigger bodied people because, just like she says here, our concerns are often invalidated. Great video!

I get that obesity leads to increased risk factors on the pill, and that it is a risk factor for other illnesses too, but when the first reaction to my walking into a doctor's room was to weigh me, sometimes before I had even finished describing symptoms, that was really hard. I would go home in tears, and desperately tried to avoid doctors and nurses as much as possible, despite the fact that my health issues at the time had nothing to do with my weight.

    I don't think Dr. Mike is fatphobic at all. In our society it's proven we have extremely high rates of chronic diseases. A major contributing factor to the majority of chronic diseases includes obesity, and we are currently experiencing an obesity epidemic in the U.S. Just look at COVID-19...a huge risk factor for morbidity and mortality rates includes obesity. As a provider like Dr. Mike it's his responsibility to ensure he is delivering quality care to help his patients live a long and healthy life. If that means he has to recommend that his patients lose weight, this does not make him fatphobic. I am sure he looks at the whole picture when he makes this recommendation to his patients, and checks for other biomarkers before doing so. Lastly being a medical provider is very hard, and like he said changing behaviors is not easy to do. People need to stop looking at their providers like the enemy, they want to help you...that is the reason why they have dedicated their lives to that profession!!

    As a Certified Fat Person™️ (lol), sometimes hearing people talk about the detriments of being overweight can be frustrating because the information is pretty well known. There's likely very few fat people who haven't heard from everyone they interact with that "being fat is unhealthy, hard on the joints," etc. That might be presumptive of me to assume all fat people know that, but it's shoved down our throats every second of the day just by our existance. If you go into the comment section of a video by almost any fat individual, there's multiple comments talking about weight and health, even if the fat person is doing a fitness activity like dancing or yoga. I get that it's doctor Mike's job, but his tone kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I've been doing lots of research into the medicalization of fatness and fatphobia for my thesis project (which is on TikTok's diet content, totally inspired by you) and agree totally with everything you said. We are so culturally conditioned to associate "fatness" with unhealthiness that weight loss is always the main prescription for better health for anyone labelled overweight or obese (which are completely socially constructed categories). Not sure if you're familiar, but there's a concept called "healthism" which was coined by Robert Crawford in 1980 and taken up by a lot of scholars still that talks about the idea of increased individualization of health responsibilities and why that's harmful. Totally applies to the "obesity epidemic" and everything you talk about here. Love your videos Abbey, keep it up

    • @AlicedeTerre
      @AlicedeTerre 3 года назад

      Your thesis sounds incredibly interesting! I've had this idea as well, obviously not writing dissertations on it though. We are so often vilifying fatness because it's "unhealthy" yet people so often refuse to put it in a public health frame work and push solutions hinged on individual action.
      One question, I've noticed that fatphobia is common even in very progressive spaces where acknowledgement of systemic oppression is de facto. Where people readily discuss how patriarchal cultures causes gender based violence or racist policy causes poorer health outcomes in minority areas, it seems far less common to recognize how those same systems impact people's health and contribute to obesity. Is that aspect something you've considered in your thesis?

      @@AlicedeTerre Thank you! I'm really enjoying the research so far. The issue of the lack of acknowledgement of fatphobia in social justice spaces has definitely come up. The theory seems to be that because fatness and obesity are associated with choice, it is still "socially acceptable" to discriminate against or shame fat people. Fat studies is a growing field and lots of scholars are interested in fat discrimination, but there hasn't been a ton of crossover into actual policies which protect fat people. Of course socially fatness is becoming more accepted, but I'd say you're just as likely to some across something completely fatphobic as you are something that is fat accepting online. The stuff I'm looking at on TikTok isn't explicitly fatphobic, but it is part of the larger diet culture rhetoric which worships thinness. Which is funny because a lot of TikTok content, especially that young people are posting, is largely progressive in terms of advocating for gender and racial equality. But the same young people that want justice and equality also seem to desperately want to be thin... definitely shows how "fat" is still a widely unaccepted and feared identity. Sorry for the long response!!

    The problem with diets is that people go on them only looking to lose weight. They cut calories or cut out certain foods. They hate it and force it. And that's why diets fail. I feel like if people make small changes and don't view it as a diet, but a life style change it will work. I've never had an success in losing weight until I stopped focusing on weight loss. I don't know if that makes any scene at all. I just started focusing on eating better, and regular exercise for my health and not for weight loss. With that mind set I lost 30lbs. I feel as a society we're having more and more problems hearing the truth. Everything turns out to be offensive these days. Same with this concept of being fatfobic. It's only in recent years that I've actually heard it used. A doctor telling his patients that they need to loose weight is not offensive! It is the doctor's duty to look after the health of their patients. You might not feel great hearing that - it is however for your own good. Of course the way in which the message is delivered makes a difference so kindness and empthaty are very important when having these types of conversations. Not saying anything out of fear of hurting the other person's feelings though - I don't think that is very productive. Lastly, referring constantly to the minority in each group ends up diluting the message as others have said. The vast majority of people do not have the issues that are presented as being the norm: eating disorders, health problems after yo yo dieting etc. It's like me saying that because I had melanoma no one should recommend being in the sun early morning for 10-15 mins to get that vitD in. I know (as someone who is in the minority group) that I need to careful and things that apply to most people might not apply to me in this case. Adding more weight to these topics than they need to have in this material can discourage those who do want to try and loose weight to improve their health.

Would it not irresponsible for a doctor to not mention your weight if you are in fact over weight? So many illnesses and dieases can be avoided by losing weight. I'm maybe 15 pounds over weight and my doctor has mentioned it to me and how I need to be more active. I'm getting older and a lower weight coupled with a more active lifestyle could benefit me in a number of ways. At one point, I was 55lbs over weight and was pre-diabetic. Should my doctor not have mentioned that losing weight would prevent me from getting a life long disease? I took his advise and lost the weight. Just because you're feelings may be hurt because a doctor mentioned your weight, doesn't mean they are wrong.

His video on it clearly acknowledges that so many can't afford healthcare, but brushes it off as his hospital has a charity for those who risk bankruptcy. He just overall seemed very dismissive, and honestly from an outsiders perspective medicine seems far more in it for the money. In the UK it's more of a thankless vocation

    To argue with dr Mike's point about low adherence with the experences of the Biggest Loser contestants is kind of low. This show did not represent healthy weight loss, it was brutal and it was made to entertain those viewers who wanted to see fat people suffer. The mental and physical health of the contestants was not conaidered at all unlike what a doctor such as dr Mike works with a patient. No wonder the Biggest Loser contestants metabolic health was damaged, but how does that correlate actual medical help for obese patiens?

    I'm obese and working on my health. This video was good until you said people can't control their weight. Like... What? With proper exercise and diet you absolutely can. Please you have a lot of influence and Need to be more careful with saying something like that. Maybe my interpretation was wrong but that's how it sounded. And frankly if you are healthy in every other area, your diet is mostly comprised of healthy foods (as opposed to heavily processed foods), and you eat to satisfaction... Most obese people would probably lose some weight by doing those things. Most overweight and obese people are NOT doing everything you just said. Is this not evident in your line of work and the patients you see?
    I agree weight is not the #1 indicator of health but metabolic health doesn't have anything to do with the other CLEAR evidence of all the risks obesity has to health issues. Mike is right to acknowledge this, and I feel like the bulk of his channel is already dedicated to talking about improving health based on things other than weight.

    We should aim for fat loss for overall health benefits. I don't understand why everybody are saying constantly 'weigh loss'. You can be 140 lbs and 30% body fat which will be similar to be overweight when comes to health problems. Lower body fat and keep your muscles. Less muscles, slower your metabolism= less calorie your body burn.
    Btw, cherry picking studies is not the way to guide people. Non of the official meta-analysis doesn't show obese people are healthy - it's fact.
    Also, people should know how to count calories and practice for some time, so they can stop blame everything but themselves. From what I can see, we always look for excuses.
    Eating a tube of B&J's and saying "it's genetics" or "hormones" is totally wrong.

    While obese people may be metabolically healthy, I think it should be acknowledged that larger sizes can and sometimes do pose a barrier to more active lifestyles, which is one of the mainstays of a healthy lifestyle. Also, I think sometimes it helps to be more specific when talking about fatness, whether you’re addressing overweight or obese people, because I have observed that type of goalpost shifting by people who see fat-phobia everywhere-using statistics on people who are simply overweight to justify obesity.

      I'm not medically trained, just a fat person. But at 30 years old, 290ish pounds, 5'10", I'm more active than I ever was at 210lbs and I feel better, too. My blood work looks great, my iron levels are finally normal and my blood pressure isn't always low anymore. All because I stopped waging war with my body and decided to feed it properly, regardless of it's size.
      So what is this moving goal post? How is a bigger body automatically unhealthy? And why are you worried about anyone's health besides your own?

    I definitely think i can see both sides. I come from a background of binge eating, emotional eating, and the like. I NEED structure, I have tried intuitive eating and it left me feeling unhappy with myself, feeling unwell, and groggy. I can totally see how people with restrictive eating disorders would thrive off intuitive eating but I think we need to be a bit more flexible and realize there is no RIGHT way to live your life when it comes to food. I firmly believe the root of your wellness should come from love for yourself. I don't personally have the intuitive STOP reflex, I will literally eat until I feel sick. Structure for some can be a good thing for some but a bad thing for others, just like some people need structure to learn and others enjoy and benefit from being more intuitive and flexible.

      here's my two cents on alcohol: it's horrible and we should avoid it. Most people drink because of social pressure or to look cool in front of their friends (I have seen this in all age groups that are legally allowed to drink). I haven't had alcohol in over 9 years and when I decided to stop drinking I immediately felt so much better. I took that pressure off of myself, I stopped poisoning my body, I felt physically and mentally better and to be perfectly honest, I saved money and lost some weight (which wasn't intentional but I also wasn't mad about it :D). The argument that a glass of wine a day is good for your heart is total bs to me. There are other ways to take care of your heart that don't include alcohol. I'm not saying that everyone should stop drinking alcohol completely, it's just what works best for me. If you want a drink here and there, totally fine. But in my opinion having a beer (or several) every day or even drinking every weekend is too much. There's a reason it's called alcohol poisoning; it's poison so why would you want to drink it on a regular basis?

    I'm genuinely curious here and I really would appreciate it if you could look into this for me.
    You said that "one third of people who are considered obese are in fact metabolically healthy." Honestly do you think this could be because of how we categorize obesity?
    I have struggled with this for years I have been considered "obese" for the majority of my life. As someone who is 5' 9" and wears a size 6-8 I feel this isn't correct. As someone who is quite literally big boned (think broad shoulders and big hips) I am wondering if how we categorize obesity is half our problem. Height and weight don't seem to be sufficient indicators to draw that conclusion.
    I would be very grateful if you would somehow address this topic!

      An interesting fact to consider: recent research has shown that those who are in the overweight BMI range are generally 'healthier' than those who are in the underweight BMI range (health being defined as: likelihood of osteoporosis, estimated lifespan, and mental health). Your weight is not a complete reflection of your health - there are so many other factors such as heart rate, blood sugar, muscle, cardiac output etc. (I can go on).

      Look up "metabolically healthy obesity." It's a temporary state between becoming obese and your body finally not being able to cope. Most people will eventually experience obesity-related diseases (including metabolic) even if they start out as a "healthy" obese person.
