Some people have told me that I sound nervous in my videos. Although I take most criticism with a grain of salt, I wanted to try doing a video with a more calm demeanor, and that's what I did in this video. Do you think it turned out better? I'm not so sure. It seems like it takes the energy level down too much. Perhaps sounding nervous is perfectly fine because it makes everything I say more interesting.

While you did seem a bit more confident in this video, I can’t say I mind a nervous narrator either. I’d wager each video’s script is more important, and you always seem to have a good grasp on what you want to discuss and usually lead the viewer there in a clear, logical manner.

I have a lot to say about LRG, iam8bit, etc.--plenty that is positive and plenty that is negative--but my biggest irk surrounding the company is when you go to watch someone's gaming collection video and they just have oodles of LRG titles. Most will be unopened, unplayed, and countless times I've seen the collectors admit that they know NOTHING about the game, but that they simply bought it up because it was a "Limited Run Games" release.

This. Far too many people treat these limited releases as investments to park money into, and/or shelf candy. In some ways it's hard to blame them because it's not practical to actually play these games, since it can take up to a year sometimes to actually receive an order. Sometimes longer. By then they likely bought a (much cheaper) digital copy and moved onto other stuff by the time their order arrived.

My only issue with fake scarcity is collectors, and appraisers. The same thing happened with comic books before their bubble popped. I wish people bought them because they actually cared to enjoy the item, and not because they see it as an investment. I'll never understand the people who have rare games, and instead of dumping/sharing it with everyone, they decide to hoard it.

In that time, I forgot I had ordered anything from them and moved to a new house, and I got so many junk emails from them that I missed the email that said "we're about to ship it, make sure your address is accurate"
Then, I see the shipping email, and am basically told "as long as you have mail forwarding, you'll be good"

Also to touch on what you said about how they used to do it in limited quantities back then. They still do that for specific games randomly. Like when they have some stock left over from PAX or when senran kagura on the 3ds got a new run but only lasted minutes to get. It's a bit of an issue still but less frequent

There is a definite place in the niche collectors' market for companies like LRG, but my biggest gripe with them is how much they encourage scalping and prospecting. There may not be a way to eliminate it completely but there is absolutely a conflict of interest between LRG and ebay resellers, and tweaks should be made to the current model to take the steam out of the reseller/investor attraction to LRG releases.

  • @downs4784

I used to collect just about every release they did from Rainbow Moon on VITA until the first Switch game they did. (Definitely tried for all VITA released games) As the years past it honestly just got unsustainable. They were no longer the only gig in town. The games went from being about $25 to $35 each to close to $35 and more. The biggest problem is that there is just too many releases. 3-5 a month was hard enough, but now it’s like 7 games at a time not counting their competition or other games releasing that month. Once they stopped the VITA games I basically only buy about a game every 2-3 months from them. The main thing I like is that they now have collector editions of games that wouldn’t get one from their publisher like Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

In the beginning, I bought their Oddworld-games for Vita. After that, not so much anymore. However, when they announced they were doing physical releases of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, I did decide to grab those for Xbox and Switch. Now, the most recent game I bought from Limited Run Games is Grandia HD Collection for Xbox.
I do sometimes enjoy buying their releases. But only if it's a game I really want to own. Most of their stuff though, I don't care so much anymore.
A lot of it also gets retail releases in other territories later down the line. So the fear of missing it isn't so big anymore.

Here’s my tip for buying LRG games. Every year they have their annual Blowout Sale, where they sell off “excess copies” of many of the games they produced at their original prices. (Goes to show how artificial their scarcity is). This is actually how I got most of the LRG games I have. You avoid spending a fortune on the games on eBay, and since these games are already produced and sitting in their warehouse, they ship out in a matter of days instead months or years.

    Great subject matter.
I ordered from Pix'n'love two or three years ago (I forget when exactly) they are a French/euro version of limited run games.
I ordered the king of fighters 2002 unlimited match ps4 limited edition, it came in a neogeo style clam case and art book. Lovely set, cost me around £100 after post and tax (France to uk).
The problem was they were vague on its release window. The digital game arrived on psn a matter of hours after the pix'n'love physical game announcement, it said "summer" of that year...
I didn't get it til near Christmas. Instead of waiting 4-6 months it was 10 months.
Kinda bad how long it took to get shipped.
By the time it arrived, I almost forgot about it, and I didn't care all that much either. Took me a few weeks to really appreciate owning it after my mate popped over and had a gander at it.
Edit: I know pix'n'love isn't LRG, but the experience I had, and how they operate, was very similar.

I bought a few of their games during the first few years. Over time, I soured on them completely. I don't hate what they do as far as limited print runs of physical games... it's very likely the only way they can stay profitable, and the only way a lot of indie games would even get a physical release. The investors and scalpers do suck, but they find their way in wherever there's money to be made.
It's the ridiculous wait times and poor service that killed my interest. After year-plus waits, games arriving damaged, and slow response times to any issues made it untenable.
I opened all of mine to play. Yeah, they're small print runs, but it's not like vintage games where everyone threw away the packaging and we all opened our games. Even if they only printed 2000 copies of a game, guaranteed 1800 stay sealed, and they've absolutely flooded the marked with hundreds of releases. They won't carry the value of sealed cartridge and CD games of the '80s and '90s. They will be more expensive than standard releases, but nothing like the classics, much like vintage baseball cards and comics.
Also, there's often an Asian or PAL release of the same games, in english, available elsewhere on major releases.

It’s cool that a lot of these games are getting a physical release, but limited run is definitely not the best company to do these releases. I think the straw that broke the camel’s back to me is that their PC games are not even physical (no disc, just a Steam key). They advocate for physical games, yet they don’t care about PC Gamers and just ship a Steam key inside the box.
    Hypocrisy.

I don't believe that LRG have much in the way of actual value on the second hand market. People post listings on eBay with crazy prices, which gives the flase impression of scarcity and inherent value. Whenever you see an LRG listing for a crazy price on eBay and it shows as being "sold", that does not mean that any actual trade took place. In fact, there was a very credible theory that LRG employees themselves were making said eBay listings in order to inflate the perceived value of their own brand.
In terms of actual worth; I think you could typically expect to pay either the same amount that the original game was sold for on LRG's site, or slightly more. They're really not worth that much.

Idk if someone else has posted it but for the LRG cards they have the 3 different cards for releases (which they have stopped doing now). They have the original print plate which is only ever 1 of and they only were randomly given with a collectors edition purchase, the gold stamp (rare one I think only 100 or so of them were made) and the common silver stamp. I actually have a few gold stamp switch ones and actually have the print plant from The Duck Game. I'm a collector as well and switch is going to last a long while it seems. So far I have every single switch game they have released on their website. I also don't intend on ever getting rid of my collection and just have to find time to chew through my backlog of 2000+ games. Love your videos even if I am a watcher and non-commenter.

I waited just slightly over two years for my LRG order to arrive. Yes it was a special edition but still unreasonable.
Other companies are guilty of it too.

A few retro re-releases and a few Switch games, and I bought nearly every Vita release, only missed a few. And not a moment too soon because Limited Run started becoming a worse company not long after that which I can no longer morally support. Blind boxes come with an actual random game that they had extra or got shipped back to them. It usually also has the cards in there with it. Each game typically comes with 2 cards. There are silver stamped (common), gold-stamped (rare), and the printing plates are extremely rare.

I like LRG, but they really ought to be made to order or something. Some of their older releases would be nice to be able to still order. They want to keep physical alive, yet are like a weird problem with physical releases at the same time. I've gotten a few releases, and yeah I've waited over a year for one or two, but they still came through. Even with a replacement for TMNT Radical Edition that somehow never arrived according to the shipping. So they've got extras somehow, but probably not many. But yeah, investors need to stop looking at games like a commodity and stop scalping and stop sealing games in acrylic. It really defeats the purpose for people like me who just wanna play the damn discs and carts lol.

The value is in the cart/disc! It's on your screen! Recognize the true worth of box art and plastic wrap in comparison. Should boxed games cost more? sure. but not THAT MUCH! Maybe the game has 50 backrounds. How long would it take for you to draw 50 backrounds that actually look good? Do you know machine code? People had to learn an exclusive computer language to make all this happen, and other people are ruining their finances over box art and plastic. just my opinion.

The numbers don't add up for these listings because if you just add what a game cost plus shipping its way off from the asking price what these individuals are asking for? Point is do your research before buying video games because scalpers and especially people dealing with Wata will scam you every time!

i have this many limited print games:
    126 switch
    72 ps4
    8 ps5
    7 vita
213 total. I try to buy every “good” limited print game - generally something i deem is at least an 8/10 or higher - and also none of them are ports of old games like jak & daxter and far cry or whatever
im definitely a gamer before a collector though. I probably would never have discovered some of my favorite games of all time like outer wilds or disco elysium if i didnt have physical copies waiting for me on my shelf

So I'm a "re-seller", well I have a small business that only operates online so no overhead renting a space but I do have a shed in which I fix old game systems, refurbish systems and games etc. basically keeping retro systems alive. I also, just like any other business, buy games for the lowest price I can get them; and sell them for market value or as close as possible. So my questions is: why tell people not to buy from "re-seller's"? that's like saying don't buy from a business because they do the same as me but at a larger scale. If a business is asking for too much money for an item, then don't buy and watch the price come down. It's simple supply and demand. Don't buy from scalpers, buy from small businesses. But generalizing all of us small business owners and telling your fans not to buy from us is not a thought out plan.

I don't understand the criticism of them. If I like a game, or they have a game that looks like it would be good, I buy it. That's it. These things have like a 2 month pre-order window. They haven't done those releases that "sell out in seconds" in years. Everything is an open pre-order. They make however many people order. Waiting forever for the games to arrive should be expected at this point, that's just how long it takes with all these companies. I don't understand what the issue is unless you're some insane person that has to have a "complete LRG collection". That whole thing with them firing someone for following Republicans on Twitter was completely stupid and they SHOULD be criticized for that, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the actual games they sell.

They rereleased Shantae on 3DS recently (this year iirc), and it was a limited amount of preorders that sold out in the same day. I saw it in the first hour of the email, then checked later after work and it was already gone. Not everything is limited like that, but it still happens.

    • @zachary_attackery
      @zachary_attackery 4 месяца назад

@@nharde466 Yeah but that was already released on regular consoles (PS4 and Switch) with a normal release that everyone could get. The 3DS release was like a "special" thing. If you wanted a physical, portable version you could have bought the Switch one
