Harpo should have switched the cards less noticeably but Margaret plays it off and still delivers her line perfectly so that the joke lands. She was always the consummate foil to their absurdity.
The Marx Brothers were damn clever and ingenious for most people. There are no comedians alive today this sharp and creative. Even Laurel and Hardy, and Abbott and Costello had moments of genius. The Marx Brothers took time and patience to devise their material. Most of today's comedians resort to vulgar routines & shock value. This is why the Marx Brothers have lasted as few others have. I admire their work.
abbott and costello on the math question is unreal. has me laughing. I heard some people tried 13+8-21 a certain way and get away with it. you're right you won't see anything ever again because these comics are clever.

Yeah, that notion that she never understood any of their jokes just wasn't true. Groucho famously said that in an interview more than once but (surprise!) was only kidding. Margaret probably got all of their jokes, and should be remembered as one of the greatest straight men/women of all time.

I used to play pinochle back in the day. I believe that's what they were playing. You send bids across to your partner to see who want's the bid. He said ONE which means he has 100 points to send with aces. In a pinochle deck (48)you have 4 of every card from A's down to 9's but some folks play with out the 9's From A's to 10's. He could have anywhere from 4 up to 16 aces. 4 ace hearts, 4 ace spades and so on.

An interesting thing is Chico Marx was an excellent card player not just a superb pianist and comedian. He used to play bridge with the great bridge player/teacher Charles Goran.
@@amjoshuaf. One of the things I remember reading about Chico Marx is that he supposedly was brilliant at mathematics. Such a shame that he couldn't manage his finances, because Groucho and Harpo had to control Chico's spending so that he wouldn't go broke. Chico blew so much money on gambling that Groucho and Harpo had to put Chico on a strict allowance in his later years. Groucho once told a story about Chico stating that Chico owed a lot of money to a gangster from a gambling debt and that when Chico died he had an unsent check in his pocket that he was going to give or mail to the gangster, but Groucho said that Chico was extremely lucky that he never sent that check because it would have bounced!
@@michaelbarlow6610 I just read Groucho and Me a few days ago, and in it I think Groucho points out Chico’s mathematical abilities. If memory serves me.

Actually, Chico (who was a habitual, perhaps compulsive, gambler) was supposed to be a good card player, especially pinochle. His last TV appearance was in 1960, on the TV show 'Championship Bridge', although he and his partner lost. I wonder if that episode is around somewhere? It would make a great companion piece with this clip.

All in one take. That's why the mistakes (card falling off table) are so precious to see.
I love how when Margaret Dumont want to cut the cards , harpo put it back the way it was
Harpo always got the best lines.

Ah, Margaret Dumont, the Marx Brothers movies wouldn't have been the same without her.
For sure. She made all of those movies. A true class act.
Well, they would have had a lot more room on the stage!
They were together on stage before the movies. They had it down.
She always looked surprised by and delighted with all the nonsense and mayhem. A lovely lady.
Groucho said she was the perfect straight woman for them.she didn't get the jokes. And that's what they loved about her.
Always cracks me up when she cuts the card and Harpo returns them the same way.
harpo's face when he's cutting the cards kills me hahaha
Craziest game of bridge I ever saw hahaha love it
Imagine all of the hours they played cards backstage when they were in Vaudeville. Thousands of hours, no doubt.
The Marx brothers will always be my favourite comedy team...
In a sea of flotsam and such, what a lovely thing to behold. Thank you for posting this!

Margret Dumont: She 's trying so hard to keep a straight face!..LOL They just break her up everytime!
She had a lovely and warm smile though
