  • Titan is Saturn's largest natural satellite and the second largest in the entire Solar System, behind only Jupiter's Ganymede. It is the only satellite that has a dense atmosphere and the only stellar object other than Earth where concrete evidence of the existence of stable liquid bodies on the surface has been found. It was discovered in 1655 by astronomer Christiaan Huygens, the first natural satellite of Saturn discovered and the sixth in the Solar System.
Titan is the sixth ellipsoidal satellite from Saturn, orbiting its planet at a distance of 1.2 million kilometers. It is mainly made up of ice and rocky materials. Its dense and opaque atmosphere prevented greater understanding of its surface until the arrival of the Cassini-Huygens probe in 2004. Since then, several data have been discovered, including the existence of liquid hydrocarbon lakes at the poles. . The satellite has a geologically young surface with few impact craters, but several mountains and possibly cryovolcanoes have been found.
Titan's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen, with smaller components having led to the creation of clouds of methane and ethane, as well as nitrogen-rich organic mists. The climate includes winds and rain, creating a surface similar to Earth with the presence of dunes, rivers, lakes, oceans (probably liquid methane and ethane) and deltas, dominated by seasonal weather patterns. The liquids on its surface together with the enormous abundance of nitrogen in the atmosphere create a methane cycle analogous to the Earth's hydrological cycle.
