After trying out the Boss Katana - see video here - I also unboxed and tried the new Nextone Artist amplifier that Boss sent me!
The Boss Nextone Artist is the next level up from the Katana 100, but offers a very different thing. The Nextone claims to simulate the power amp stages of four valves that are signtaure to the sound of many classic guitar amplifiers. These are;
6V6 - Used in a Fender Princeton
6L6 - Use in a Fender
EL84 - Use in a Vox AC30
EL34 - Used in classic Marshall amps

Dude I remember you 6 years ago teaching me the a and e chord on my first act discovery guitar it’s cool running into your RUclips channel again.
Just tried this out today with a strat and I was blown away!!! Very powerful eq. And I was able to get very convincing and satisfying vintage Marshall tube tones and fender as well.... never liked the Katana’s when I try them out in person but the nextone just did it for me... my favorite on this was was to max out the gain and put it on .5 watt and work the master...
Your Nextone demo just sounds more natural/organic than the Katana. I bet if you cut back and forth between the 2 amps playing the same tunes, the Katana really would sound more like a beginner amp. Good beginner, but still not touching the more natural sounding Nextone. You can of course just keep going in this way for every few hundred pounds more crossing into real valves :-) But It’s all about finding the amp which inspires you most within your budget. For solid state price point, and sound quality it has to be one of the best packages to date, especially when we see you really digging it at house friendly volume. Very cool demos Andy. Concise yet decent level of real world detail. Rock on!
Yes! Great to have someone who gets that the Nextone thing is not meant to be modelling of specific amps and speakers but of the general pre and power amp circuits. So no, the EL84 setting doesn't sound exactly like an AC15 or AC30, it sounds like its own thing in that ballpark. And they got all four of the general circuit types right. Bang for buck the Nextone combos are stellar.
The Nextone likes having the master on full to drive the power amp hard. That’ll get the best power-tube-like compression and sag. As a result it’s important to pick the amp, Stage or Artist, that’s powered correctly for the situation, just like a tube amp. Too much power means you have to turn it down and the sound suffers like in this video which doesn’t sound as full as the amps do when pushed.

The 'trick' is to run the master as high as you can. I run on max and adjust the volume with the channel volume
It's like the Blues Cube, but with more options added. Sounds familiar and great.
I appreciate these vintage sounding guitar tones. I recently bought a BOSS NEXTONE artist so I don't need to haul around my heavy tube amp and 4×12 cab anymore. It's doing a great job and making loading and unloading a breeze. Tried Katana. Wasn't pleased. The NEXTONE allows a real guitar tone without all the complex options I personally don't care for. Just plug in, and choose from the clean or lead channel. This is how an amplifier should look sound and work.
All sounded a bit 'fizzy digital' to me, or is that just because I know it's solid state? I must admit at my age now I'm very attracted to an amp that weighs almost half of my Marshall TSL-601...
Awesome I agree 100% great amp you didn't tell about outputs to drive other cabs. This is were it stands out! I have two marshall cabs closed 4x12 and open 2x12

I like this quite a lot but for me the Katana is still more versatile, however like Andy says, it's all about getting a sound that you like

Good demo and as I suspected - A more serious but of kit. I am (in a minority it would seem!) Not impressed by the katana - I owned one(100w) and it is , well - ok. It's lightweight and can get loud but I was immensely put off by the fanboys hysteria. The kat just doesn't compare with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. This amp however looks much better and would be a serious consideration as my backup amp (still like the hot rod ). Thanks for the demo.

Before choosing between nextone/katana artist. One has to consider value for money gain.
For only half the price katana/std covers both amps (for me) and happily sits right in the middle.

I have a Katana and Nextone and think the Nextone sounds like a grownup amp in comparison. It's also good with different speakers just need to tweak the treble/presence a bit. Love my Nextone selling my Katana 50.

Rather than that pedal, I would get either a victory sherrif pedal, or a Victory Sherrif 22 head, which is now my main amp! 🎸

A bit out of tune. Good review. Makes me think of having an Artist next to my Blues Cube.
For AU $879.00 (RRP $1,099.00), I'd rather buy a Marshall DSL20H for $556 and a decent speaker box - FOR LESS. And that's exactly what I did! Great demo though! Seriously, this, presumably Chinese made amp, is way overpriced. The profit margin must be enormous! Boss needs to rethink its sales strategy.
