Not filmed in sweden, although Ragnar was a swedish viking, and several places in the series such as Götaland and Uppsala are located in sweden
This show is about Ragnar Lodbroke and Rollo who were the first vikings going west and begun conquering places like Britain, Ireland and France. They begun with sacking Paris and then went on too settle in England. Soon Rollo got Normandy from the french king so the constant raiding along the river Seine would stop. Normandy means "Land of the Northmen", from Rollos family then came "the Normans", who invaded England and the english monarch is the direct descendant from Rollo.

Just finished watching this series, after the first episode I didn't expect it to be as good as it was, I got hooked & watched the whole series in 2 days. Anybody into medieval age films will love this!

Jarl Haralsson, the villain, is based on Sveyn king of Jutland, the real Ragnar's antagonistic brother. Sveyn is ancestor to Prince Charles of Britain. He was the son of Sigurd Snogoie, as was the younger Ragnar. The older Ragnar was their grandfather. Sveyn's son was Hardeknud, the father of Gorm the Old, the king who finally modernized the monarchy of Denmark in 899.

English is a mixture of Anglo-Saxon (who were Germanic) vikings and Normans (which were vikings who settled in France who eventually took over England) so essentially English what the vikings spoke

Ragnar Lodbrok is the son of a swedish king, who at the time also ruled Denmark. Norway at this time did not exist as a unified country.

Theres not as much blood, slowmotion and boobs, but i LOVED spartacus, one of my favorite series if not my favourite, and vikings is equally as good, ALL HAIL ragnar lothbrok! Defenitely worth the watch, Season one was great, and when you watch season 2, it seems like they got a bigger budget becuase it's fucking awesome. Go watch it !
I think it's better than Spartacus. It focuses more on character development rather than orgies, violence and tits. The fight scenes are also not done in a 300 type of way.

you are right that not every single Scandinavian was a viking. "Vikings" were the raiders and soldiers of Scandinavia. A lot of vikings traded with the foreigners that they conquered. But almost every man could fight. Men could challenge others to a fight to the death. Most people who would stay at home would make livings off of trade or farming. The northmen/norsemen (the people who lived in Scandinavia at the time) traded so much that an 1100 year old Buddha was found in Sweden.

I beg the differ. The vikings spoke Norwegian. Norwegian is still spoken in (you guessed it) Norway. Off course it was a bit different like all other languages were back then. But it's basically the same.
The reason why they're speaking English is because it's an international language, Norwegian is not.
NOTE: Not all Vikings spoke Norwegian, but all the languages are still spoken today.
For a fact, all monarchs in the whole of Europe have one common relative and that is Rollo, he is the godfather of the european monarchies.
