  • Part 13 of the total beginners course to FreeCAD 0.20 covers pocket types and options in the part design workbench. We will demonstrate each one and combine it with the other options available. We will understand symmetric, tapper, reverse, to face, normal, reference edge etc. We will finish with a demonstration of how to create the necessary pocketing structure for a hidden locking mount.
    This course is aimed to teach the fundamentals of free CAD understanding the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.
    We aim to teach you freeCAD in a practical way.

    A year ago freecad was like a foreign language and nearly impossible. Its only because of this beginner series and your help I can start to make use of it and 3d print custom parts. Amazing resource thank you.

    Each time I watch a video I think "ahh ... THAT is the most useful thing I've learned about FreeCAD so far".... Nice work.

    Good practice on features and workflow. It does seem like in practice that slot needs to also be curved, else the screw head will grind against the outer wall of the pocket.
    I fixed this by editing the sketch of the second pocket: replace the straight slot lines with arcs, bring in external geometry of the first pocket edges, and make the arcs equal to those respectively. Now the second pocket and first pocket sweep the same path.

    Nice and clear as usual.
    I've replaced the long sides of the slot for an arc with the same radius of the underneath shape. It should improve the movement of the fixing pin inside the groove.

      I was thinking that would be a good feature to add. I was also thinking of how to complicate this (of course... complicating things seems to be my super-power) by angling the inside surface that would bind against the underside of the fixing pin's head (screw-head) to allow the turning action to not only capture the head, but wedge between the head and the mounting surface.

    All has been going well so far as I've worked my way through your tutorials, but alas the pocket of the screw slot fails for me on 0.20.2, both on FreeBSD and MacOS. Apparently the Wire is not closed. Unless I've missed something important, I'm guessing that this is a bug in this particular version. Without the linking arcs, the two circles pocket nicely, with linking arcs, or even straight lines, all I get is a blank screen.

      I had the same issue, initially (FreeCAD 0.20.1). I had the impression that one of the vertex on the sketch was a regular vertex instead of a construction geometry vertex. So, I used the construction geometry tool to convert the vertex from regular to construction geometry and was then able to perform the pocket operation successfully.

    Update! Got it to work. Seems The Sketch for the Pocket was not part of active body. Strange I tried dragging the Sketch 001 into the body before and it didn't work (a System Bug?). Even so still quite happy with FreeCAD & Tuts. Please keep up comments Folks especially on solutions to issues. They've helped Me out more than once!

    At about 11:00, I don't understand why moving the sketch for the pocket along the Z-axis appears to move it along the X-axis. I drew the sketch looking at the Left side of the middle bar, which means Z is up and X is toward/away from me as I sketched the circle...

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад +2

      This took me a bit of getting used to. So a sketch is 2D and the Z axis is normal to sketch so pointing away from the sketch if laid flat. When you attach a sketch or any geometry to a face the Z axis will run in a different direction depending on attachment. This is know as the local coordinate system. The attachment is x,y,z offsets in the objects local coordinate system. I am going to do a video about this as it's pretty confusing for new comers to CAD

    Was anyone else not able to change the position of the slot sketch? I still can't figure out why I can't.

  • @MartynDerg

    I'm using the ondsel ES fork of freecad, and I cannot change the offset of the pocket, and I cannot move the sketch placement, the properties are greyed out :(

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  3 месяца назад

      Change the attachment. Because the sketch is attached to a face the attachment is used over the placement. So this should appear first in the list. It's a common thing that catches people out.

    Hi All, Enjoying the Tutorials and feel I'm learning something that I can apply to my Aero Modelling Design, I'm using Ver 0.20 but when getting to pocketing the recess 24:34 I get the following error "Cannot use selected object. Selected object must belong to the active body" Then "Consider using a ShapeBinder or a BaseFeature to reference external geometry in a body". I've checked and have the toggled Body active (Bold in the Tree). Sketch selected Green and identical to MJ's. I remember the directions from previous Tut's but not sure how to resolve this error. Any assistance much appreciated. RW

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  11 месяцев назад

      Glad your making progress. Is the sketch you created inside the active body, you may of added it and it's outside in the treeview. If you collapse the body in the treeview you should not see the body beneath until you expand it. If its outside drag it into the body.

    Nice, very useful technique, but probably difficult to print (how do you remove the supports inside the cavities, unless you use disolvable material?)
    You may try w/o support, but the result probably gonna suck.

    • @warped_spacetime
      @warped_spacetime Год назад +4

      I think this can be printed without support by orienting it face down, with the slots in contact with the build plate. The "ceiling" of the slots will then be taken care of by bridging.

    Can anyone guess why I would not be able to attach the Sketch001 to a different Face of the Pad at 15:53? I have selected the sketch, selected "Support, Clear, but when I click on a Face or Edge nothing fills in the LINK window and the sketch does not move..
