It's relevant, because a key aspect of the platform is to make these commitments social, in order to convince more people to donate to effective charities. @ali don't hesitate and correct me if I'm wrong
So happy for you! As a muslim, I can confirm how satisfying it is to regularly give a percentage of your wealth to charity as zakat and sadqas. This is going to be great for you and the world
Thank you, Ali for your personal pledge over the last 5 years, and the new Company Pledge! We are so happy to have so many passionate and generous people in our global community!
This is the best video I've ever seen at the intersection of business and charity. Nonprofit marketing usually pulls on heartstrings, leaves people feeling guilty about not doing enough to support or so emotionally devastated they donate out of a beautiful heartfelt desire but without taking an ROI perspective of their donated moeney. The business world's convos center on ROIs, growth, scaling, etc. etc. etc. often metrics driven but out of touch with our values. I love how you look at giving from a head-and-heart perspective. And also, saying that aloud - that there is a resistance to giving, because we do love our lives and don't want to give that up and there's NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT - takes so much shame away from not giving "enough." I feel like people throw their hands up saying, "I can't save everyone," and that becomes an excuse for not helping ANYONE. And by normalizing the shame we feel, we can find sustainable ways to give, rather than avoiding it altogether. TL;DR - you're the coolest person I know (IRL or online) for talking about this and the first person who's motivated me to give without leaving me feeling ashamed of my 1st world country privileges.
As a philanthropy professional, I am so grateful that you are highlighting the importance of donating. Donations are down, at least in the US. We need all the help we can get. Thank you!

I have an annual 10% goal. I pay bills, then give money to people on Kiva micro-loans. When the loans get paid back, I can select someone new. Giving is my expression of gratitude for all the blessings I enjoy.
A super inspiring video! I love how you shared your personal reservations and thought process! It also took me some time to feel comfortable giving 10% - but now I have for a few years and it's only made my life better and more meaningful to do so!

I think more tree planting does a huge positive impact for the nature, ecosystems, the climate, the oxygen and CO2 ratio, for the soil, for habitats of many animals, cooling down the temperature, and make the land look more beautiful & lively..... there are tons of advantages of planting trees🌟
I love your perspective on the 10% pledge. It’s a great way to make a tangible impact without feeling overwhelmed or sacrificing your lifestyle. Thanks for sharing this!
In Lithuania, people are increasingly donating to charity. I think that’s what we’re here on this earth for. If health allows, you should try to study and work as much as possible to create good material well-being. After achieving material wealth, you can help others get back on their feet.
Good stuff, props to everyone who's already donating! For everyone already donating: Giving What We Can offer great resources and recommendations that might help you identify even more effective organizations than the one you're giving to right now! :)
So I have a detailed plan with blueprints, designs, ground rules, and organizational protocols, on establishing a hyper-efficient modular tent-city in Africa. I am currently working on developing this in Nigeria. Once built, it will lift around 6,000 people out of poverty. If such a project could potentially be on your list for charitable donations, then that would be fantastic! What's great about this is that it doesn't just help people, but it teaches them how to help themselves, so much so, that they will prosper and even help others locally around them. Then, we believe a ripple effect will ensue. Thank you kindly for your consideration Ali.
I like how you are explaining your thinking. By asking others to donate too, you might inspire others that may surpass what you give which is a huge win too.
Before starting to work full time I was determined to give a continuous percentage of my pay to charity. Finding what on-line sources described as their best choice of charities, ("Americares"), I eventually contributed for several years. And true to your statement, they once sent me a card stating "You are saving lives". I believe giving to charity also contributes to the givers well being and adds to the value of whatever work the giver manages to accomplish.
By doing this 10% pledge rather than 80 or 90% - if this video empowers alone 10 other people of the 40k+ viewers in this video - you will have effectively achieved the equivalent of paying your whole wage. It goes to show how change is far more effective done _small_ by the many rather the _lot_ of the few. "Many hands makes light work". (just realised this was said at the end of the video but still - amazing to think about)
I understand the concept of effective altruism. But over the time I just realized the most effective way to fight poverty and inequality is tô fight the system that enables and feeds on it.
I'd argue that through donating and improving people's health and education, you'd consequently be helping to promote the economic development of LICs which would drastically decrease levels of poverty.. while systemic change is definitely important, I think it's important not to undervalue the power of effective giving
Those of us born in the UK are so unbelievably fortunate. Giving some of our resources away is not only a moral imperative, it's also been shown to be one of the most effective ways of increasing your own happiness. Saving someone's life or buying a flashy new watch you don't need? No trainer.
I know a lot of people who donate to charity but won’t clear there own debt and sort out there financial situation. If you’re someone in debt please sort yourself out before you start donating 10% of your income. Just like how on a plane you need to sort yourself out first before you help others, same is true for money and donating money
Hm it depends! If you feel insecure, you should prioritize your own finances. But if you have debt that you're comfortably paying off, it's not wrong to donate some amount now instead of some larger amount later.
@Ludix147 No... If you have debt pay it off first LOL. How you feel about your debt has nothing to do with anything. Most charities spend most of their money on administrative cost to pay themselves anyways so you have to watch where you donate your money. You'd be amazed when you start researching some about charities that tons of people donate to...
@@blosky5665 You're 100% right that many charities don't do much good with our money or are inefficient. That's why Giving What We Can spends thousands of hours figuring out which charities are likely to be the best use of money. It's crazy how much effort they put in 😲

Well said! The most important step is to start conscious giving at all. Then it's just a matter of your personal values, like how much more you care about your own community health than someone really far away.
Is definitely a concern! But interestingly If you look at many charities that are recommended by orgs like Life you can save, some are literally 10 people! Charity evaluators like GiveWell don't pay any attention to how big or flashy a charity is, and interestingly most of the most famous charities in the world don't get recommended by these orgs
It seems a bit weird to have such a narrow focus for the “most effective” charities. Of course we should give to responsible organizations, but if two charities are fiscally responsible, who are we to say that their mission is less good than another? Saving lives is certainly noble and I believe that all lives are valuable, but communities need help, the homeless need homes, people need water, kids need education, and the list goes on. Giving should be joyful and going to the causes you believe in, not wholly focused on just “maximizing” your gifts. You may also want to have relationships with the charities that you give to… and volunteer! It all matters.

In an ideal world, charities don't need to exist. And someone who gives to charity or does charity work is not guaranteed to be an infallibly good person.
What a sad state of the world that on a video about giving and talking about not differentiating between people in one country vs another, there are so many comments of religious nature indirectly boasting about their religion.

YESSSSSSSSS Thank you so much!
Love this, can’t wait to do this in my company as well ❤
Charity navigator can help see where your donation dollars go.
And GiveWell will tell you if your donation dollars actually accomplish something where they go
Thank you! This is my biggest issue, I don't want to donate to some CEOs multi-million dollar paycheck.
I would've cried on the child thing 😞❤
Welcome to what Jews and Christians call tithing. I’ve been doing it since I was a broke college student living off the GI Bill and college grants. It was hard at first, but now it’s a matter of course in my life. It’s life changing and a huge blessing. I hope everyone watching this takes it up!
Thanks alot
If you want to help even more people consider donating to a charity in a developinh country. It costs less there and will save multiple more lives
Very Nice. ALI
That's incredible!
In an ideal world, charities don't need to exist.
And someone who gives to charity or does charity work is not guaranteed to be an infallibly good person.
Nobody said that.

What a sad state of the world that on a video about giving and talking about not differentiating between people in one country vs another, there are so many comments of religious nature indirectly boasting about their religion.
My thoughts exactly!
Masha'Allah... May Allah always bless you with all the best... Ameen🤲🏻❤️
Inspired..❤
