- New details have emerged in the Biscayne Bay boat crash that claimed the life of a teenage girl. CBS News Miami's Peter D'Oench spoke with Florida Fish and Wildlife officials, who say they have identified the person who was operating the vessel.
You wouldn't know you hit someone in a boat that size
You are not allowed to say that. Everyone posting here is a marine expert...
@@rickss69 you don't need to be a marine expert to know that's true.
@@j.a.3138
I think that was his point.
Sorry, but towing a wakeboard in Biscayne Bay!? Every time I've been there, it's been much too busy for that.
Yup, that's Stoopid with two "OOs".... right up there with rollerblading on the Freeway.
The bottom line truth, a person's head in the water can be nearly impossible to see depending on conditions. Chances are this guy never had a clue that she was there.
he needed to go slow....he did not....if he slow down, victim could probably scoot out of danger.....
What's concerning is that it took this long for people to recognize this as the most likely scenario.
@@leelaural Nope. The ski boat is supposed to wave an orange flag.
@@leelaural You've never been water skiing I see. Bobbing up and down in the water with boat wakes all around, with your life vest on and a big wake board.....you're not "scooting" out of the way of anything.
@@leelaural You have no idea how fast he was going.
It's hard to see a head bobbin in the ocean and when you hit something that small in the water you might not even notice, this is a heartbreaking accident!!!
I tend to agree. Miami waters are packed with idiots driving high powered boats stupidly, but a head in the water is hard to see and at high speed the driver may not have noticed the impact. Poor kid.
Most of the reports have said that the girl was water skiing. Some have mentioned that she had just fallen and was in the water. That makes a difference. In the water she would be harder to see. However when I was learning to waterski I was taught that as soon as you fall you grab a ski and stick it up in the air so boaters can see you. It was the first safety lesson I learned. If she had been taught that, would she have lived? I am NOT excusing the old man - he should obviously been more alert but this could be a lesson for other water skiers. I am so sorry for her family and friends. 💙
She was on a wake board not skies .
He's 78 and I doubt can handle a boat that size. That's OK, the family will be owning it soon after a good attorney..
Yea I was taught the same thing, hold the skis up
@@MrPolymersSo you've already judged and convicted this man?
So you think swapping the life of a 15 year old girl for a boat is a good deal. Hey if you’ve got two maybe you can get a couple of camels for the other one.
It’s more than likely that the boat driver bears no responsibility but why jump to conclusions before the facts are established?
Growing up on the water and living here in Florida I’m very experienced and can tell you with a boat that size if he didn’t see her he would not have known he hit someone. With two people in the water maybe he was focused on the other and didn’t see her. With four engines no way he knew, with that being said the person towing tandem wake boards in a busy area like that is more at fault than anyone. You go to a quiet part on the water without boats nearby not the busy choppy part of the bay where boats are traveling at full speed. This is so sad all the way around for everyone but at the moment it would seem as the at fault party was towing two teens in very dangerous waters.
Keep in mind there were two kids in the water and not close to each other. he couldn’t see two girls in water they shouldn’t have even been in while moving at a legal high rate of speed.
yup--agree with you brian--i have thousands of hours both as boat operator and skier--as a boat operator do not put your skiers, wake boarder people at risk- i doubt they will have any charges on the old guy
I live in Florida. There is no amount of money in the world that would make me water ski or wake board in busy Biscayne Bay.
@@Plutogalaxy He likely did nothing wrong, and shouldn't be charged with anything. You have to be doing something you weren't supposed to be doing to be held responsible. Otherwise you're just wrongfully blaming an innocent person , which is more messed up than the crime itself in some cases.
@@Plutogalaxy Following that logic, that the tow boat operator didn't notice he was towing kids around a crowded bay with other boats cutting through isn't a get out of jail card.
A very, very sad story in both cases, however for the parents of a beautiful 15-year-old girl, it's really tragic.
Freak accident..too many kids 12!!!! On a towing boat...too much distraction
That's what I thought too.
Sad on both sides😢
How is it sad for him?
@@CarolRademacherhow is it not?
Yes, tragic for the 15 year old who was killed and for the elderly man who is most certainly horrified he caused her death.
@@CarolRademacher WEll he didn't do it on purpose....and your gonna place blame where were the parents?
The man probably didn't even know he hit her. People have got to be careful in the water.
No doubt the boat driver had no idea he ran over someone in the water... it's a big boat... she was out of site.. in the water waiting to be towed.. the ski boat spotter should have been more attentive.... tragic!!
I don't even think she was waiting for her tow, I think she had fallen off the line and was waiting for her friends to circle back. It's a very vulnerable time.
As soon as she says "78-year-old man" they show the picture of Peter D'Oench, i thought that was him.
The driver of the boat pulling the teenager is responsible too.
Yes
Why? Did they have tow flags up?
How’d you figure that? That’s like saying, if you’re driving a car, in your lane and I hit you, it’s your fault!
The driver of the ski boat said, they were racing back to the girl, waving and blowing the boat horn. What more do you expect them to do?
as a ski boat owner i protect the skier, wake boarder,etc--will make a drastic 180 if they go down and go right at a on coming boat to protect the skier--and telling the person to raise their ski or board works--does not appear the old guy ever saw her at all---on the phone??
@@paulne1514they also said that the towboat was a large boat with limited maneuverability not typically used for wakeboarding/waterskiing. Wakeboarding boats stop and turn on a dime. Also on the water, you can't hear people yelling or honking which is why the people on the towboat hold up a flag signifying a swimmer is in the water.
If she did not immediately grab her ski and put it in the air, she would be near impossible to see. Her boat driver should turn immediately after the skier falls to retrieve. There are many individuals that have responsibility for safety when involved in water skiing. If the water is choppy a hit in the water will likely not be heard. There are many variables involved here.
Towing evidence and didn't secure bag it first. Not very impressive! Boating safety needs to be mandatory!
Boating safety for the operator of the ski boat would have preventing this.
How would there be evidence of drunkenness the day or two after boat flies from scene.
Evidence is just that-evidence. It isn't proof. You never know, though. The authorities must have gone through the yacht to see if there were any beer cans, wine bottles, etc.
He may not have known it even happened. She fell suddenly in choppy waters. Whoever put her out was more guilty, but it was a tragic accident.
that is why he ran. He will use his age as an excuse. He should be in jail. The family should sue for his assets!!

@@Dan-xx5jqAnother expert! Man this comment section is full of them. Please leave us your number in case we need a good defense attorney. I mean your analysis is compelling
It's sad on both sides but it seems like such a reckless move to tow anyone behind a boat in that area.
Bingo. I hate that this young girl with a bright future is just gone but the tow boat operator's actions need to be looked at too. No matter how quickly you notice your skier fall, it takes a little time to circle back around pick them up. You might be 50 yards or more away from your skier while they bob helplessly. We used to hold up the ski if we thought another boat might not be seeing us.
Check waves at the time. no one should ski at that time. very dangerous waters. no one can see swimmers.
I hear a manufacturing defect in boats then by this account and no boats should be on the water if they can't see clearly into the water.
Totally agree! I grew up in this area and my parents would never had let me swim OR ski around boats. Even small boats... In my opinion the driver is not responsible, at all.
That’s the problem…with the waves you can’t see everything around you. They should have a separate area for boating.
You ever taken an IQ test?
They do, it’s called the sea!
Shouldn't there be designated areas for wake boarding?
I don't think so, but personal responsibility should be enforced. Why anyone would want to wakeboard or waterski in the rough open ocean with heavy motor boat traffic is beyond me? The best place is a calm flat lake or river.
Did the boat with the skiers have any type of safety flag letting people know there might be a skier in the water?
The point here is how long does it take a 42' boat to turn around and pick up a skier, assuming someone was watching the skier and knew she fell.
@@swerne01 That is not the point here.. SMART boat operators use a ski flag that is red or orange and on a large pole to warn other boaters there are people in the water around the area. If that boat with the flag is not hauling az, SMART boaters know there is a skier down in the water in the area and to proceed with caution. Without that, no one will EVER no you had a skier to begin with. There are reason these safety items exist today. This is not the first time this has happened and sadly it will not be the last.
@@whoogoesthere I understand ski flags are legally required in Florida so that if the boat that towed this unfortunate young woman was not flying one he was in violation of the law.
@@swerne01 The other boat operator might have seen that flag and slowed way down. We will never know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It would be nice to have more information such as the time of day the accident happened, was the girl wearing a bright red life vest and was the tow boat flying a water skier/wake boarder flag and using a safety spotter where both operators fallowing prescribed rules governing boat travel and passing procedures ??
It sounds like the man didn’t know he even hit the girl. Ohh. What a horrible situation. Prayers for the family and friends of the girl.
As a former FWC officer in WI, thank you for the investigation.
That was quick. Sorry forbtbe heartache that young lady's family is experiencing. 💔
A teen driver would be possibly the worse driver over the 78 yo man
With so many videos and video sites that constantly make videos of the stupidity in boats it's amazing this doesn't happen more often.
So very sad for the loss of the young lady. I feel so sorry for him too. My cousin was involved in a boating accident many years ago. He never got over it.
Why has there been no information released about the boat operator that was towing the two wakeboarders? Did they have a spotter? Why didn't they stop when the first wakeboarder fell? Were they commercially licensed, was it a rental, or was it just friends on a personally owned boat? The operator of the towing vessel is as much if not more culpable than the guy who hit her.
Excellent points, and I'm just now hearing there was a second rider. That really changes everything.
Wrong! If they were towing two skiers behind it takes time to get turned around as the boat itself is a distraction If another boat didn't know they were skiers there in the first place. If nobody was paying attention then they wouldn't have saw the boat hit the girl. The girl was not thrown into an object as an object hit the girl.
The man who owns the home where investigators found a boat that they suspect struck and killed a 15-year-old Ransom Everglades student was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, according to a report released Wednesday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, owns the Coral Gables home where the boat was docked behind when FWC agents seized the boat Tuesday afternoon. He was the only occupant in the boat at the time of the hit-and-run crash, the report said. (Miami Herald) The report, released Wednesday, identified the operator as Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables. The report states that Adler had been wakeboarding with someone else who was further away and both “fell off at different times/locations and both were in the water simultaneously.” Officials said they continue to investigate and have not announced whether Alonso will be charged; it’s not clear whether authorities have determined if he was even aware of the fatal crash.(Channel 10 News)
After looking at more facts coming out, can say there were definitely more factors involved and not simple. Why wakeboarding in a potentially high traffic area? Was was the craft a multi-engine craft that’s harder to slow and turn to immediately pickup dropped boarders and why with these hazards not considered in having multiple boarder, creating a higher risk as boarder if dropped would take longer to circle back and pickup?
I grew up in a cold state that only got good skiing /boarding in July/August and always with a single engine craft that immediately slowed and turned around within seconds so we minimized time down/risk…
high traffic area?...then the boats slow down to 5 mph....then they can see things...
It's not against the law to ski in a high traffic area unless it's otherwise posted. That area is notorious for skiers because it is allowed.
I sure hope he was sober and this was an honest accident. I’d hate to hear this was easily avoided
It was a horrible accident, no law with her name or other restrictions on the rest of us are needed. we all accept risks doing these things.
After he leaves the scene the term accident is no longer relevant.

And, even if he has lost some of his wits and shouldn’t be driving that boat anymore, he definitely knew a couple hours later when the news was everywhere. Even running offshore, I think you’d notice, right? You would at the very least think you hit a small log or something. Accidents happen so easily on the water. So, if he hadn’t run and not contacted authorities, I would have nothing but sympathy for him. Sad the girl lost her life but it’s not as if the boat driver intentionally and maliciously planned for this to happen and he shouldn’t be sued either!
It's too much for the average person to grasp. They just buy into whatever spin the news uses to present the info. When they made it sound like someone "fled the scene" people think, "Omg catch the killer", like idiots.
When I was 16 or so, I was 35 feet offshore a public beach when a boat pulling a skier ran through the middle of our group. He saw the girl in the water at the last minute and tried to swerve to avoid hitting her, but that just ran the propeller up her body from the waist through her shoulder. The driver had been looking back at his skier who was trying to warn him about the swimmers. The girl lived after we pulled her out and rushed her to the hospital. There, she got to know my sister who was in there with a broken back---from a motor boat accident.
Don't tow people in high traffic areas. The old man probably didn't think anyone was stupid enough to be doing it there. But
Best and most intelligent comment on this thread.
My heart goes out to the family of this innocent beautiful soul. Its very sad. Pulling a "wakeboarder" inside one of the busiest navigational channels in Miami, especially on a Holiday weekend, is like allowing a child to ride their bike across I-95 at night!!! It was completely irresponsible and negligent of the captain driving the boat pulling the skier! The waves and chop in that channel are very high due to the heavy traffic of large speeding boats! The boater that hit the poor girl more than likely could not have even seen her nor known he hit a person. Its insane and not expected for anyone to be in the water in that specific area. A boater would not be looking for a coconut sized head of a person in the middle of a choppy channel where there are dozens of speeding boats.
Lots of non boaters in here commenting on a subject they have no idea what they are talking about. Most have never been on a boat in the Ocean have no idea what they are talking about. It’s not like driving a car but it’s nice to see all the experts coming here to think they know. It’s a tragedy no doubt nobody wants to hear a young person or any person lost their life

I've heard that she was water skiing and fell. That begs the question, was the towing boat flying the correct flag for towing with a spotter ready to wave the man down flag and how long was the tow rope. This report said that she was being towed on a wake board. It's impossible to have productive dialogue without the actual facts!
Skiers typically tow at 50 to 75ft. Advanced skiers might be on a line as short as 35ft but they're doing that on a small lake behind a tournament boat, not the flippin ocean. The "facts" have been all over the place, but the "news" people seem to be settling on that she had fallen off and was floating in the water waiting for pickup.

Doesn't sound like a hit and run at the moment. Sounds like the driver of the other boat didn't even know it.
It’s her own fault . If u don’t know how to water ski , don’t go water skiing . They should charge her parents
The family should sue for all his assets!!!
If no crime was committed it's an insurance issue.
The investigation will determine a number of things. Was he really on the boat alone? Where was he coming from? If he had been somewhere and say was drinking it will all come out.
If not it just may have been a 78 year old guy driving a very powerful boat and it was a terrible accident.
My major question is when he knew from the media, friends, family, or even a neighbor what happened and what type of boat they were looking for was his first call to a lawyer or law enforcement?
I just heard that LEO and Florida Fish and Wildlife found him it wasn’t him contacting them.
It’s always those who know nothing about there boat and the dangers that come with it, that have the biggest and nicest toys, and use those toys as if everyone living in there world. 🤦♂️
There is absolutely no excuse for any boater to be cruising that closely to another boater ... especially in a location that is many multiple square miles in area! I'm 65 and have been boating my entire life and there is no reason to come that close. Boats towing kids can be seen for miles away and you as the driver and captain have probably up to a minute at any speed to maneuver safely around any situation! Totally preventable.
if he was the only person on it okay...otherwise I think they believe an older guy won't face tough punishment....you know the usual excuse..."medical issues" or pushed the wrong pedal or some such....they always get away with it...if the law won't act, then the girls family needs to sue this guy and his entire estate for every single penny....
Boston Whaler 420 Outrage
Was a accident
Why does Peter always look lost and confused? He has a look on his face like he wants to go home but isn't sure where home is.
