  • Today, we're going to take a look at a watch that's a great improvement on a great watch: the Seiko SPB117 'Prospex Alpinist' on a bracelet, and the SPB119 in white on a strap. Thanks to Lewis Jewelers in Ann Arbor, Michigan (www.lewisjewel...) for loaning these guys my way to check out.

    I have the sarb017 and love it, the new versions yes have improved power reserves but I’m not keen on the X on the dial or the cyclops, and the price hike doesn’t sit well either even with a half decent bracelet. Seiko seem to enjoy the “one step forward, two steps back” approach like with the new 5 series.

    No lume at 12 O'clock shouldn't be too much of a big deal so long as you realize that the crown and compass dial are at 3 and 4 O'clock; that should help with clock orientation.
    That said, a "12 O'clock specific" lume does look nicer. 🇺🇸👍✌

    • @steves7337
      @steves7337 4 года назад +5

      I’ve never understood this complaint. If it’s on your wrist it’s pretty apparent where 12 O’clock is. It you pick a watch up in the dark you feel the crown.

    Yeah, the compass 'complication' has a very Cracker Jack vibe to me. You'd think they would at least put some markings and info in the bezel - maybe a number to call the boy scouts for help. It's like saying a watch has Global Positioning because you can determine your longitude by tracking the sun's zenith in both local and GMT and then multiplying the +/- difference by 15°.

  •  4 года назад +4

    Have to say I can't agree that the new green is better than the old green.
    Sure the movement is better, but I don't love the Prospex X like you mentioned, why is there print on the see-through caseback, hah.
    I really can not stand the cyclops, and the datewheel used to be black on the old model, and white on the the new one, I think the black datewheel looks way better. :) I prefer the old one for looks.

      I agree cyclops faces look ugly to me

    • @Cenicebri0
      @Cenicebri0 4 года назад

      Agreed, and I may add the lack of trim in the date window, also it doesn't say alpinist anywhere on the watch, the alpinist logo could have been on the rotor but nope, they just smudge the caseback with the big Seiko print across the back. Why would you put a see through case back and block the sight? It doesn't make any sense, and the value is not there. You can get a powermatic 80 movement with 20bar, see through caseback with a better view, screw down crown, better bracelet and no gimmick compass for about 450dlls with the certina ds action day-date (C032.430.11.051.00)

    HAHA! Nice pick up. I thought things might be heading in that direction when you pulled the sticker off. I can't help but wonder how reliable the inner compass bezel will work for timing, or if it rotates too easily. I usually pick up a new Seiko each year for summer adventure, and I've had my eye on this one since the release, but now a couple of the new divers have made it into consideration as well. BTW, I know you're known for knife vids, but as a knife and watch guy I gotta say that your watch reviews are spot on as well.

    • @HarryFlashmanVC

    The bracelet supplied with this $750 watch is the exact same bracelet that Seiko has been making for many many years for the Sarb 033/035 which you could purchase up until a few weeks ago on amazon for under $350. Strapcode makes an outstanding oyster bracelet for the Alpinist (both old and new use the same bracelet). It can be found in Amazon for under $100.
