Josiah is doing an amazing job and has really taken Jonah's injury seriously, even down to reporting it to you in the first place. He is so quiet and serious that it is easy to take that as slacking, but it is so clear that is not the case. He really has the long range interest of your farm at heart and he is just a child. Good job Josiah. And yes, I'm encouraging you to get well soon Jonah.

A survey is expensive, but extremely essential. I built a fence around my property and the survey pins were absolutely a must for me to know where to build my fence.

    • @katrinalikethehurricane1

ABSOLUTELY! When we bought our property, we were told the line was at the ditch on one side. Then someone bought the property next door, and wanted to cut all the trees down at the ditch line. We got a survey done, and our property line actually goes about 10 feet PAST the ditch! We got lucky on that one.

Your surveyor has gone by old deeds and plots. They use a directional system based on the north and east direction that are on those deeds. Then it tells them points that could be iron bars iron caps trees fence posts concrete monument that might in place. Then it’s all placed into a coordinate system that they can place points and get throws to your corners or markers. And once found they use GPS coordinates to locate them and then a topographic survey should be done to verify your GIS maps to see if it is the same.

Yep, tomato leaves are bad for chickens. They are toxic to people as well and that is why lots of people break out when working in the vines to pick the fruit. It might just be me but I would clear all those plants out of there.

@11:44 Justin is saying it's too steep and I see by his elbow on the ground is Lycopodium obscurum, commonly called "ground pine or club moss", which is endangered and protected in some states. It would be an interesting plant to conserve. If that's a north-facing slope you might not graze it, but grow some ginseng, goldenseal and other medicinal plants on it! What a wonderful venture you have started! Blessings Abound

As a registered land surveyor, appreciate your words on surveys. People don't seem to realize their homes/farms/homesteads are the one of the most expensive purchases they will make in life, and a survey is just one of many things they can do to protect their rights as a landowner.

A lot of work, indeed, but something tells me that you are all up to it. What a great opportunity for Jonah, Josiah, Lily, Gideon and Henry. They have learned so much already, with the exception of Henry, about homesteading that they can see the potential in what you are planning to do with the rest of the property. I just feel bad that Jonah can't be right in the middle of it all right now.

You’re really putting yourselves out there with this huge endeavor in 100 days. With Jonah being unable to physically give you a hand it might be wise to invest in a small backhoe that can move dirt and lift out tree trunks and move trees to a working zone for processing or fire wood. I think the manpower from a backhoe would give you much valued time.

Im not saying everything needs to be cut down and replaced, I think they have enough acres that are open to have more food trees, and I’m not saying you couldn’t survive in a crisis with only a veggie garden but it would be pretty hard and risky. They should have never allowed homes to sit on less than one acre and should be encouraging and teaching homesteading in schools.

Loving this. Just what I needed tonight. It was so soothing to be experiencing the overcast, indirect light the luminous, soft golden fall leaves you have in your area. You were taking us all exploring an uphill slope on your property.
Hearing the children now & then, & lightly crunching footfalls on fallen leaves was so much like being there. Thanks for that. It was like I was transported for a bit.
It's fall up here in New England too, but lots of trees around here are
still green. Most of the fall colors have yet to develop. Most, like the Maples, Birch, & Oaks are still green. Then too there are the various greens of the Evergreens.
I was trying to imagine seeing through your leaves. Soon they'll be shed & we can better see what you know is put there. Now I'm looking forward to virtually being there when you show us your future options of views from your options for your new homesite.
What fun. You guys must be so psyched.
This whole project will be amazing & all recorded for the whole family to have.
So even the youngest of your son's & daughter's children's children some day could look back a few generations to watch you & your children grow throughout this project.
Soon you can all look back & see when you broke ground & when the foundation was poured, & so on.
As the boys & Lily grow older, they can look back & see more of what was happening & in what sequence, when they were so young. And sweet baby Henry is so young, otherwise he'd only know of these events through what others remembered & through what he'd be told.
This way he can look back when he wants to & see the events around himself before he was old enough to consciously register events, given the somewhat limited understanding of a two year old or even a 5 year old.
These kids are learning so much about life because of their parents living life genuinely, & creatively.
It was lovey to see you all working together so naturally. It was very calming & those kids are learning this kind of life throughout this precious time with you.
Look what baby Henry learned that day on Daddy's back. He saw the piglets escaping down the hill about to get into the field but his brother & dad worked it out. They pigs were finally all reunited.
Maybe it was helped by the lure of the adults drinking skim milk. 🐄🐄 🐄 Henry saw the whole thing raised up on his dad's back, like watching a movie play out from his "crow's nest" perch.
They were coordinating to gather up 12 baby Old Spot piglets. There was a camera on the ideal spot to get a wide view of the piglets scurrying back up the hill, with three sons & Dad, guiding them in together, like it was easy.
I think once the piglets stopped feeling chased they were more open to understanding where they needed to be - with the adults.
Now you're entering a new phase It's a beautiful thing to be witnessing. Thank you for taking us along & for recording everything so beautifully

@Justin Rhodes Remember in permaculture, for land on a slope you do not want to have your zone 0 at the top, but right in the middle of the slope. All roads lead to home, and you don't want that to always mean uphill. The view may not always be as good, but you'll be happy when you actually have to be active on your property each day, going with the flow rather than constantly fighting gravity.

I'm excited for you guys! It looks like you do have enough undeveloped land to make a whole new homestead. I'm going to really enjoy seeing you make this a reality. Be careful taking down the trees. A neighbor of a friend had cleared their homesite at the top of a hill and the next rain made a huge mudslide that went down the hill. The homesite was pretty much ruined. It was the best spot on their property to put a home. Kind of changed their plans a lot. Building a home on a slope is tricky. I can understand wanting to get away from the road though. I'll be watching. It looked fun for you and the kids to explore the acreage you don't get to as often. It is really pretty in there with all the pretty fallen leaves. Thanks for this Rhodes family.

Justin, I recommended this new adventure to some friends….it’s a great place to jump in. But for awhile you might assume newbies and explain the “inside lingo” like who Big Daddy is, etc.; Sally; the Great American Farm Tour. New people won’t know all this stuff.
    It’s going to be exciting!

The way Lilly just gets in that hole!! 🤣 could never do that here in Australia, there would certainly be SOMETHING in there poisonous or deadly 🤣

This is awesome! Y'all are my new heroes! We are about to move from northern Utah to southern Missouri to buy a house and land, and do freestead ourselves. This is so cool to watch, and I'm sure as I get farther in, so much information to absorb! Thanks guys, and good luck! Can't wait to see the final product.
    Comments as I'm watching-
-I wouldn't knock harbor freight too much. They have some pretty decent hand and power tools lately. In fact, most of the larger items, like shelving and such, has become better and comparable quality as of late. In my opinion of course.

Tomatoes and potatoes, eggplant and others have poisonous leaves - they are "nightshades" and they're related to 'Deadly Nightshade'. So even if you're only harvesting tomatoes with your bare hands or doing a lot of pruning with bare hands, a person can get a toxic reaction from touching the leaves. Once the tomato turns red, it's not toxic, but the green leaves are, and a green tomato still has toxins in it. Once it's cooked, it becomes edible (fried green tomatoes). But the toxic leaves could poison a person (or even a chicken).
    Thanks for the content.
    Keep up the good work.

      Warning alert!
Please be careful as there are several men replying to women only and asking “how they are doing” or “hi, how is the weather,” or “how’s the weekend going over there.” When some answer, they ask for location. I have reported these men to RUclips. Let’s make sure we get these creeps out of these vlogs.
Just be careful with strangers asking personal questions.
