I bet this is similar to how clowns and mimes came to be. Just some guy trying to entertain poeple on a populated city/town street. Could probably go as far back as medival times with jesters. Jesters werent just entertainment though. Royal court jesters were normally well educated and were expected to give council on top of entertainment. They were also anti yes men and were the only poeple that could openly talk trash royalty without getting a death sentence.
He's funny, gets the crowd involved which isn't always easy. 👏
