The late Anthony Bourdain once called Sarawak Laksa as “breakfast of the Gods”. We may not know of his spiritual proclivity but we know one thing for sure: Sarawak Laksa makes for an amazing breakfast (and lunch and dinner). Significantly different from the many types of laksa available in the Peninsular Malaysia, the Sarawak Laksa is made with sambal belacan, coconut milk, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, and lemongrass. Served with rice vermicelli noodles and topped with strips of chicken and prawn, this Bornean iteration of the laksa is beloved by all Sarawakians and is ate together by families and friends no matter the time of the day. In honour of Anthony Bourdain, let’s kick off our list with Choon Hui Café, where the laksa stall he first fell in love with in 2005 stands. Since then he has returned to the coffee shop off Jalan Ban Hock many times, even buying a round of meals for everyone in the restaurant during one visit. He may not be around anymore, but his legacy at Choon Hui lives on. Queue for the Sarawak Laksa begins right from the opening time, and the pages in the order book go up to a few flips in a matter of minutes. And then proceed to the waiting game. The stall keepers work diligently like a well-oiled machine making one laksa after another but expect to wait for up to an hour or more. In the meantime, find a seat and order some other appetisers, like the popiahor toast with egg. The laksa is definitely worth the wait: Bursting to the brim with local Sarawak pepper and spices, the bowl is offered in three different sizes, and come with king prawns, poached chicken, shredded omelette and a generous helping of noodles and beansprouts.
Penang is a hidden gem in Malaysia. The street food which are not over rated and too commercialised are still delicious and very affordable. The nicest Street food are usually hidden from the eye of the public. I am proud to say this because I am born and raised in Penang. 😊
Hey Luke, glad you enjoyed all the great and delicious food of my hometown Penang, the Penang Laksa stall you had in Ayer Itam has sadly closed down due to alot of restrictions during this pandemic and many street food vendors have closed down also. Its so so sad to see them go , i hope this pandemic will pass quickly and you stay safe wherever you are ! Do come come back to Penang again when this is all over.
This two sisters is very good with their laksa very nice foods in. Malaysia very spicy and not spicy foods healthy fresh foods thank you for sharing your beautiful healthy foods. Bless you all thanks
Very good foods friendly place fresh healthy foods in. Malaysia spicy or not spicy foods love all this foods fresh foods thank you for sharing your beautiful food enjoy your holiday there thank you.
Oh wow, the shots of all those colorfully painted buildings around the temple are just breathtaking. They look like candy. I so wish I could go . You guys are so blessed.
i don't understand how you guys aren't on tv yet, but i'm NotSorry b/c i love your camera angles and timing, and they would put you as hosts instead of artists. Seriously the best over time foodtraveltv since luke nguyen.
Must admit I've never heard of Bak Kut Teh until now, looks awesome. So translation is "meat bone tea" even though there's no actual tea in it, love it. Always great to see the elderlies still cook with passion and love.
@Navus_X If you are a Bak Kut Teh lover, head to Klang Town (The Royal Capital of Selangor), which is some 40km west of Kuala Lumpur. This town is the birth place of famous Bak Kut Teh and the original restaurant is located at Jalan Stesen 1, Klang
@ Navus_X Restaurant name is Teck Teh. And, for your info the word 'Teh' in Bak Kut Teh is not referring to tea as many Malaysians might have said to you. In Malay language 'Teh' is tea. But, the original meaning of 'Teh' is the nickname of the uncle (Ah Teh)) who started the Bak Kut Teh business backed in the 1940s.
The laksa, curry mee and bah kut teh are famous for tourist but the best local food in Penang will taste even better than all those three, anyway nice video keep up the good work
Seriously, Luke, I just had a garden salad for dinner. This video is killing me. That roti bakar with soft boiled eggs and laksa! I love the iced coffee. I think I ate two bowls of the cendol when I was in Penang road four weeks ago. Haha Kek lok si is my fave place in Penang.
Awe the two sisters are cute! That noodle dish they make looks really tasty, I couldn’t ask for extra chilli lol I like spice but not too much. Great video Luke and Sabrina, Merry Christmas to you both 🎄 stay safe.
Love this kinds of foods spices and not spicy very good healthy foods thank you for sharing Bless you both enjoy your beautiful holiday there I love this foods very good healthy foods thanks
Ohh wow,..its my favorite dish n its doesnt matter where it come from?, what an awesome LAKSA recipe😍Thank you for sharing!👌👍Laksai i guess in Hokkien meaning -"Six taste or six colors"?
Hey luke. Great video as always. Cant wait for the next video. Do you know that other than asam laksa, the late anthony bourdain fav is laksa sarawak. He even called it the breakfast from the god. So do give a try when you visit borneo malaysia later.
14:01 Don't know if anyone corrected a pronunciation, but I thought this was interesting. The location "Klang" is actually pronounced "Clang" (single syllable) in English (because you used the words Klang Style". I just realized that you pronounced it via the Malay phoneticism where all "a" is pronounced as "ah". It is pronounced "Ke-Lung" (two syllables) if spoken in Malay. Happy New Year! Keep up the great work!
Malaysia is a food Heaven Luke, a mixture of cultures and different cuisines. The food here is some of the best in the entire world in my opinion. Enjoy the rest of your stay here Luke =D. Keep up the great videos.
i wish i had watched this clip before i went there. We only had the chendol and it was good, but a little bit watery. The singapore version is with more ice.
Hey Luke and Sabrina, this is just a suggestion from me. The next time when you guys are back in Malaysia maybe you can try visiting Jelutong in Penang for more tasty food 😊
Oh gosh, I’m terribly sorry it was my bad. I just watched the second video 😅 Anyways, I hope you both had a great time here in Malaysia and looking forward for your upcoming videos 😃
when you come back for restaurant laksa, I recommend Ah Cheng laksa. You can find these chains at some malls all over KL. They are extremely full of flavor, better than the ones I tasted on the streets. You will love it I guarantee, and they provide chillis, and other sauces include sambal belacan omg my favorite
If you ever find yourself in KL, you should go try the Bah Kut Teh in Klang. My favorite Bah Kut Teh joint is called Sei Ngan Chai Bah Kut Teh, located at Meru, Klang. Cheers!
@@LukeMartin Klang is about an hour away from KL Sentral by train. If you're free in the morning, Klang is worth a visit. Walking distance from the Klang Railway Station is Little India, which comprises rows and rows of Indian shops including restaurants selling all sorts of Indian things. You can try good Indian food here. It's much larger and has more variety than the Little India in Brickfields, KL. Also Chong Kok Kopitiam is right opposite the Klang railway station where you can have a good breakfast Malaysian Chinese-style with toast, kaya, eggs, coffee and lots more. Nearby are other Chinese and Malay restaurants or stalls selling their own dishes. Some historical buildings are in walking distance as well. The Klang Bah Kut Teh is a must-try as mentioned earlier. You even had Klang-style BKT in Penang.
That particular type of laksa is known as Assam Laksa or Penang Laksa. Of course the best Penang Laksa would be found in Penang haha. They have it everywhere and it's delicious!
Never watch Luke 's video when you are hungry !! Amazing food and that laksa made my stomach shouting !! Can't wait for the Big Announcement on the next video :) Xxx
Hey glad to see u here in Malaysia , i stay in Kulim town which is about 45 min away from Penang Island , if you had a chance to come over my place i can show u around some famous eateries in my places :).
Luke and sabrina, I want to see u both eat, like really eating from beginning till finish, don't always skip ur eatting process, I don't get the "mouth watering" if u skip2 ur eatting moment. Hope u understand what I mean.. but so far u both great! happy holiday guys
Hi! I'm back to your channel again. Mmmmmm.. everything taste so good in Malaysia. That taste so delicious and spicy laksa. Great meal. Enjoy ur meal and see u next time.
Hi, I’ve been watching your videos a lot lately.. just wondering, how come you never go to the Philippines? Any aversion to that country? It seems like you’ve been to some parts of Southeast Asia except the Philippines.
Is the footage of assam laksa recent?....cause the old man dishing out the bowl of laksa,Uncle Peoh have relocated and set up 2 restaurants in Klang and Bukit Kemuning years ago...he had some disagreement with the other relatives
Its not lemon the sourness is from the assam which is tamarind. You should have head up to see the big quan yin statue if you were at kek lok si. Also the brown colour of the cendol is from gula melaka (palm sugar) some places just use brown sugar thou.
Similar to another food taste channel I’ve never seen someone from one country go to so many different countries & eat so much street food & always say “yummy that’s so good” - unrealistic- never had a bad bite. 😂😂
Sabrina always look so pretty when wearing exotic clothes. She is such a good sport and loyal companion. When are you going to marry her? I think that would be awesome! I'm surprised to see that Chinese food is so prevalent here, and it's so delicious! I love that sister noodle. Why do they fill the bowls with broth and then dump it back into the pot? Is it to remove excess starch from noodle and thicken broth at the same time? Everything just look so hearty and delicious, perfect for winter. Love how you are mixing things up with some site seeing. Looking forward to the next one!
The klang bak kut teh in Penang does not look like klang bak kut teh l grew up with. I used to live in KL and would drive very early in the morning to Klang for bak kut teh breakfast. Those l had was filled with pork ribs and pork belly with whole garlic cloves, star anise, other spices, etc, and the sauce was dark and sticky rich! Oh well, l have moved abroad for many years now and maybe the dish had changed.
Have u tried other laksa variation? Laksa penang Laksa johor Laksa kelantan / terengganu Laksam kelantan Laksa sarawak Laksa kedah Laksa perak Laksa pahang
The food is totally unrecognizable as authentic traditional Penang fare. The laksa is too watery and without the requisite herbs and condiments thought the prawn paste looks decent enough and the chendol is a very lazy Nyonya trying to cut corners. It looks more like badly dyed thick vermicelli hor, Malaysians will agree with this.
I'm so happy that you came to PENANG!! There's so many food here that is equally and insanely delicious and you definitely MUST TRY all of them. Btw so sad that your're in Penang while I'm in Johor for my studies TTT

The black grease thingy is called PETIS - made from prawns shells salt sugar - love it. Also eaten with a vegetable salad called ROJAK. Yummmm.
Penang food is so marvellous. No other place can best Penang my very hometown
That laksa I've to agree, it's the best. Each time I visit Penang it's a must to visit this stall and each time I have to order 2 portion.
the cendol actually turns brown due to the brown sugar used. its kinda taste caramelly. hope you enjoy your stay here.
