I knew an old Gentleman Who only owned a .22 LR Remington repeater rifle and a 410 single shot shot gun . The 410 was for hunting ( slugs for deer . shot shells for birds and small game ) and The .22 Repeater was for defending his home and property . One night some wannabe gang bangers thought his home would be easy prey for a home invasion : 2 were killed and one was paralyzed by that .22 Long Rifle .

.22 shot out of a rifle barrel gets the full potential of the ammo, hitting probably 50% harder than out of a handgun, and the rifle probably distributed several rounds per perp...good for him...

From a deep sleep at 3am after a couple beers the night before, I'm reaching for my 10/22 loaded with quality ammo, for a bump in the night.
To increase my odds of actually protecting my family, I want to use the easiest tool to get rapid shots on target with the least muzzle blast and noise.
Giving myself the best chance I can to overcome the fogginess of sleep and disorientation of adrenaline and gunfire in the dark, is my priority.
I have no problem with my man card, and I keep my 10/22 just as well maintained as my carry guns.
I hope I never have to find out if my choice is the best for me.

I was taught in the military to empty the mag during a self defense situation. It seems to me most attention is given to comparing one sized round to another. Yes, the 22lr is very inferior.
Rapidly plant 10 or 11 rounds into someone, and they WILL stop advancing. Therefore I see no issues using a 22lr pistol for EDC self defense.

As a person who carries a 22 often, because I have a need for deep concealment, I will say. It's a tool and you have to know how to use it. Practice often and shot placement is important to incapacitate. I dont really like to talk about it on youtube, but I have only used a gun once in self defense, in my front yard. I walked out the door to go to work and there was the threat right now. All I had on me was my tiny NAA 22LR with a 1 1/4" barrel. I was loaded with CCI Velocitors. I have been carrying for more than 30 years. Even before it was cool. It is not my only carry but I do carry a 22LR from time to time. Most of the time it is my Smith and Wesson model 63. When carrying a 22lr nothing beats a good revolver. Now this is my way of thinking. First of all, everyone thinks that the only way to defend yourself it to Kill, Kill, Kill. That is not true. To defend yourself means that you make it stop. You don't always have to kill a person to make the threat stop. Second. If I am going to a place that may have a large amount of people, I may intentionally carry a 22. Simply because if I miss or a bullet passes through and hits someone it is not intended, the chance of killing an innocent person is greatly reduced. You always have to be mindful of your surroundings. I would not be able to live with a passthrough killing an innocent kid. By the way, the best placed 22 LR is not the head. Gut shots just below the belly button, neck shots to sever the spine and heart shots are always the best. Now if you are confident enough to hit the eye socket, go for it. Your threat will end. Now this is not only true for 22lr. This goes for all handguns. Even a 357 mag. Shot placement is always key.

When it comes to wound dynamics, Brother, there is no one I trust more. Thanks for the discussion. I am used to shooting controversial cartridges (.22 LR, .30 Carbine), but I agree .22 LR is not the best choice for defensive use. That said, I have heard good things about the Stinger, but I am also curious about how the Velocitor, the CCI SGB (Small Game Bullet, a hunting flatpoint), and the Federal Punch all compare to each other. One thought about using the cartridges indoors, though, is hearing damage. I wonder if the .22LR might be kinder to the ears than more powerful handgun rounds. I really hope someday the suppressor is reclassified as Safety Equipment instead of the machinegun/destructive device restrictions we now face.

I do a little hog hunting and I can confirm that a CCI stinger out of a 20" barrel will put down a 200lb hog when shot in the head. I've never had one run more than a few feet. I have shot them from 20 yards up to 50 yards. The reason I use a .22 is because of my shoulder, I can't take the recoil of a high powered rifle like my .270 anymore.

In the field of dangerous game hunting, Safari guides often talk about killing power vs stopping power. This is something many people fail to understand. Just because a certain cartridge can kill doesn't mean it can effectively stop. This is why guides in Africa carry ridiculously powerful double rifles while their clients carry more modest rifles like 375 H&H. Same can be applied to home defense/EDC.

Being comfortable and somewhat proficient with your firearm is the first step and is very important. Starting with a small caliber and working up from there to find the comfort and proficiency level would be a great way to go in my opinion. If that level is no more than a .22 then well placed shots from that .22 might be what is needed to stop the threat if and when the time comes.

If you test some 22lr, may I suggest the Winchester silver tip, segmented hollow point with the federal punch? Buffalo Outdoors has done some gel block test with the silver tip out of a 3in barrel. The core penetrated 13in and the segments spread out at impact creating a nasty looking wound. If all you carry is a 22, it might make a good defense round.

Thanks for a great discussion. A few thoughts come to mind. One factor that is often neglected in these discussions is muzzle blast. In some ways I think that could be more important tactically than the recoil. The ability to clearly hear what is going on around you after the first shot can be critical especially in an indoor environment where the blast will be magnified.
Also if I were using rimfire I would choose an 8 or more shot revolver or a lever action carbine. A failure to fire would only require you to pull the trigger again or rack in the next shot which you are likely to be doing anyway. No special procedure is required.
If larger calibers are not possible or desirable for whatever reason the 32s and 38s are a very viable option. A 32 or 38 wad cutter is quite capable and very consistent. Both are low recoil and reasonably low blast especially in the 32s. In a carbine a 32 or 38 is very effective and even quieter for home defense.
Another excellent option would be a .410 with buckshot. I suspect that would have better one stop odds than any handgun.

    @semichiganandy2127 2 года назад +6

You covered things excellently. Reliability of the rim fire cartridge is my biggest concern. In all cases, we're playing the odds. Having a firearm allows a person to display it to a threat. That will cause a portion (NOT all) of threats to back down with no shots fired. If it needs to be used, the noise alone will deter another portion. Pain (if they feel it) can drive off another portion. All of those things help with the odds. But we've all seen the video of the Maryland officer who shot a deranged man multiple times in the chest, at arms length, with a .40 loaded with (I think) JHP Gold Dots. Powerful round, excellent bullet, shot placement that should be extremely effective and the guy kept hitting the cop. So, we do our best to shift the odds in our favor and keep our fingers crossed. If a .22 is all that a person can handle then their odds are much higher than somebody who is reduced to screaming loudly.

I heard the 22lr when entering the head, it might bounce around and cause damage. However, even if that is not true, a 22lr handgun allows to target with little recoil to hit (incl. repeat hits) a target spot much easier.

    • @TheKentuckyPatriot
      @TheKentuckyPatriot  2 года назад +1

Without question, recoil is a huge plus for the .22! If it goes though the skull then inside the skull there is a chance it can ricochet and possibly not exit. Once any round penetrates the skull and enters the brain it is pretty much game over at that point. Thanks for watching 🙂

Thank You for continuing to share facts, and your options. I love this channel. Yes, that is both a fact and an opinion. ☺️ Sharing knowledge based facts is absolutely priceless. 100% agree with .22 being a fantastic training tool. Learning weapon safety, firearm manipulation, and knowing your gear is critical and should be part of everyone's training... Regardless of their background.
I have carried a NAA .22 mag all day everyday for many more years than I care to count. It is usually not my primary weapon, but I ALWAYS have it on my person, even though I have a multitude of choices. If I leave my home, I ALWAYS carry my Glock 19... I have carried concealed for more than 40+ years. It is a way of life for me.
Having said that, here is my opinion... If I round a corner and suddenly find myself looking down the barrel of a .22 I don't care if it's a lead bullet or a hollow point... That person most definitely has my undivided attention. It doesn't matter what I'm carrying. Every situation has a solution, and requires careful thought to survive. Maintaining a clear head is absolutely critical.
If that means giving up my wallet to keep my family safe, then so be it.
Knowledge is the key, training is so valuable. Understanding what your weapon will do, must be given a lot of thought. Is a .22 in my pocket better than a .44 magnum left at home... No brainer! I'm rambling, lol 🤣
Thanks again for the great video.
Blessings to you and your Family.
Peace be with you always. Stay Safe, Stay Alert, and as always Stay the Course.

Take a look at the capabilities and ballistics of the Winchester Silver Tip and the Federal Punch .22. I usually just wear cargo shorts and carry a Ruger .22 Lite Rack or Beretta Bobcat. The Silver tip has had zero malfunctions in training in both. The flat nose of the punch doesn’t work well in the Ruger.

Due to age my wife can no longer handle a 9mm or even a 380. She has trouble with DA triggers but can still rack a slide. Her Glock 19 has been replaced with a Glock 44 for HD along with a 15-22 rifle. She is very good with both and both are loaded with Minimag 40 grain. I am not getting younger either. I sold off my 45 and 40. I keep a Glock 17 and a Mossberg 500 410 bore shotgun loaded with buckshot for HD. I mostly carry a Ruger LCR 38 loaded with 148 grain wadcutters. It is a get off me gun. More important I practice at self defense distances of 0-7 yards. If you are having trouble with recoil in a 9mm try the Norma NXD or Ruger ARX rounds. They also lighten the pistol by a couple ounces.
In 60+ years of shooting 22lr I have found that CCI Minimag 40 grain are the most reliable in semi autos. Revolvers I like CCI Velocitors or Aguila Interceptor solids. They would be great in a lever or pump rifle. I don't trust hyper velocity in semi autos. I have not run into any Punch yet locally so no comment. Stingers are great for small pests but not for SD. I consider it one of the worst choices for SD.

Did about 20 years as an NRA instructor in Colorado. So yeah...I appreciate listening to a shooter. Now for the .22. We have both heard and discussed its merits until its running out the other ear. I always just come back to this. How bad would I feel if you shot me with it? Would I prefer it over a good stick? I've shot groundhog with a Remington 512 at rather close range (less 10 yards), and I've had the bullets not expand. I've also shot a groundhog with a .357 Mag HP in the head (20 feet), and while the bullet obviously went through, when I dug it out of the dirt, it didn't expand, similar to the few times I've used HP's on deer (it only took two deer to make me stop using HP's for pretty much everything)... don't rely on bullets to expand, shoot where it matters, and count on the hole you just poked to work. My experience is that bullets do not perform on real living things the way they do in gel blocks; and too many people forget that the gel blocks were meant to give the FBI and NATO cheap, consistent media to test things in, not to be 100% representative of actual targets.
Also, why, at normal civil defense ranges, are you target shooting? you don't need sights to consistently hit a 7" circle at 15 feet... A little practice, and a sidearm that fits you properly, and you don't even need to fully raise and present the gun lol. I help with a "beginner's pistol class" at a local range from time to time, I bring out my repro British Dragoon Pistol or my baby browning clone to demonstrate that you don't need sights to defend yourself. Believe it or not, it's been my experience that it's easier to get new people to put an entire magazine in the torso of a silhouette at 15 feet by teaching ergonomics and point shooting than it is to teach them target shooting (most of the time, it's less than half a box). I've seen people who've been shot / shot people with rifles (including shots to the head that took a chunk of skull with it)... and I'll tell you that they aren't the magic life-switch everyone on the internet likes to talk about vs a pistol lol.
S&W's first successful revolver was a pocketable .22 short, and it was well received (to the point Colt had to pull some serious favors/bribes at the patent office to compete), and .32's were all the rage up till the 1940's in world-wide police circles... when did .32, .22, and .25 become "not enough"? When the gun/ammo companies told you it "wasn't enough". The reliability of rimfire issue is overblown, in 30 years, I rarely have had more than 1 bad primer per cheapie box of 500, and I've had bad primers/light strikes with centerfire. As far as nothing is gong to stop a bullet in your house, I've had an ND with a .357 mag, and it went through an interior wall and stopped in a cupboard on the other side of that same wall in the next room after it broke some pyrex dishes...sooo... there's that (it was kinda cool, finding the bullet in the cupboard, clean up sucked lol).
In short: the oft regurgitated, seldom substantiated BS from online forums is just that, generally.

She has no experience shooting anything but a pellet gun years ago so recoil was important. I figured point and shoot shoot shoot shoot was the key. HOWEVER her hands and wrists are too gone to even work the bolt on the 10/22 in case of malfunction so thats a concern . It will do for now because everything else I own is worse in that area( working slides. levers, pumps) . It is a first for me to see that that can be such a big issue . When u pull out a .22 micro pistol people still piss their pants & the noise and the muzzle flash is still overwhelming when you are not expecting it. As far as Rimfire, this is 2023 people. .22 is very Reliable !!! I trust my life to it. I carry 22 lr, 22 wmr, 32, 380, 9 mm , 38 special & 45 ACP. I carry them all. I’m comfortable when I carry any of them. I’m uncomfortable when I don’t carry anything, so I moved the toilet into the house so I no longer have an excuse to go out unarmed !!!!!

It's all about shot placement is key on human body like , dim mak pressure points are good place to hit with a 22. I would want a lead or aluminium hollow point filled with mercury for a self defence round

Learned two things the hard way. Rimfires DON'T always go off. Second one is you can't see black sights in the dark. If you use .22 use a revolver so you can just pull the trigger again and not have a jam to clear like an auto.

I think people focus on killing a lot as well. Personally, if I can avoid killing I want to. Yes, the 22LR is deadly but if they live they will still have stopped whatever they are doing. I am choosing to carry 22LR as I just feel more comfortable and accurate with it.

Hey Patriot; Most folks don't understand the three mechanisms of stopping a threat. Sanguenation (loss of blood pressure), structural (breaking bones) and neurological (breaking some portion of the nervous system). There are specific targets for each of these: center mass, pelvic girdle and the spine or head. Perhaps a video discussing these could be beneficial to viewers.

I have a EDC issue, I live in se Florida and want to concealed carry while walking the dog, usually one hour. It is so hot and humid that after the walk My clothes are soaking wet and have to strip everything off I seat a tshirt and gym shorts and wear a belly band. Then I wear a lightweight cover shirt, but that is even hotter. When I finish my walk snd disarm my weapon is wet with sweat even wearing the belly on top of my tshirt. Question is where best to carry given the issues. Pocket carry is not working as the gun pulls my gym pants down- being a fat guy.

I love Florida but the summer months there are brutal. I don't really know other than if maybe you could walk really early in the morning or maybe after the sun goes down so It isn't quite so hot. Thanks for watching 🙂

We sometimes carry a NAA mini-revolver...ours is the .22lr model, 4 inches long, weighs 4.5 ounces, 5 rds single action...it isn't much, but the .22wmr models just a fraction bigger...or maybe the keltec .32, it is a small, lightweight weapon (well under 10 ounces)...these are in your face weapons, but at arm's length accurate enough...probably a few other guns out here that might fit the bill...

Answer is no… 9mm to 45 minimum in a handgun, 12 gauge close, .556 close to intermediate, .308 intermediate to long range, 300 wm long range to extended long range, .50 or .338 lapua extended long range to you’re just firing for effect to suppress.

.22 rifles are a perfectly valid choice if you live in high density housing like an apartment complex.

Sufficient depends on the bad guys fortitude unless you shoot multiples to the head....meaning skill and usually Red dot. Sufficient for a teenager to use? Perhaps. Kill? Sure. But goal is quickly stopping deadly actions and even a heart shot may take too long to leak w .22. So multiples into head quickly since some may skim around skull not penetrate. And a lot of .22 deaths are suicides or used to be assassinations so perceptions are skewed. Stay well. It's a trainer and last ditch. .32 better option for recoil sensitive. I do have a vid 7 reasons to own a .22 and have looked at a few. I'd like the new umerex hk mp5 could make a good bag gun but mags sell out in minutes when become available

To try and argue that a 22 is as powerful as a 380, 9mm, or 45 would be a fool's mission because it simply isn't, the point is will it do the job or not and i say it will. The story about the guy surviving 2 shots to the back of the head I have a hard time believing. I mean, i believe it happened but something seems to be missing from the story. it sounds the shooter was using some kinda revolver loaded with low velocity target rounds in an attempt to be more quiet. as far as rimfire ammo reliability i think thats a much over blown claim. personally speaking I've fired the gamut of 22lr rounds and had as little as 5 rounds per thousand not go off and that includes all kinds of cheap bulk ammo. I almost always stick with round nose solids because despite what some claim they penetrate well. ive never ever had any 22 lr round fail to penetrate a 2x4 or half inch sheet of hard plywood. not long ago i read an article that claimed a knife blade only had to be 4-6 inches long to reach vital organs and every 22 lr round ive shot would certainly beat that. those that claim a 22 will only piss a bad guy off, or even bounce off him are probably the same people that claim small birdshot put of a shotgun will not stop a bad guy and thats something you disproved with your other video shooting birdshot with the 20 gauge. I think that the people that make silly claims like that have no personal experience with 22lr or birdshot, rather base their ideas on second hand knowledge

Thank you. I was thinking of buying 22LR rifle, but I changed my mind. Sure it's deadly round, but it takes too long to stop someone who is trying to kill you (maybe with much more powerful gun like AR15).I will stick with my big bore pcp air gun which has nearly the same power and far cheaper to shoot than even 22LR for varmint and target practice. Only 12 gauge shotguns for life or death home defense situations for me. Hope that's enough to fend off intruders armed with AR15s.

I personally like the .22 caliber & I own 2 pistols of the .22 caliber!! However when it comes to personal defense I am going to go with my .45 acp or my .357 magnum. Yes I agree shot placement is king as many will say!!!! However I will take a one shot to the torso from a .357 magnum over a .22 any day any time!!!!! These same people say stopping power does not exist but I don’t see them in line to take a shot from a .45 or a .357 magnum!!!! I rest my case. Agree or disagree.

I feel no way undergunned with a 22. Shot placement is the most important thing. Israel's anti terrorist group took out terrorists on a plane with.....,.. yep 22 Berettas. Many deer have been took with 22 as well so I do have a 22 for home defense and target shooting.
