  • Dave Quinton takes us back to 1986, a year where fish was scarce all over the province, except in St. Mary's Bay. This episode takes us to Gaskers, Peter's River and Riverhead. There's also footage of the salt fish and fresh plants owned by Universal Fisheries of Portugal where the quick freeze machine eliminated the practice of dumping small cod. 4:17 I like the ingenuity of using the metal drum as a tipping bucket for loading. I grew up like that, making stuff I needed out of anything that came to hand. I can't help feeling people these days are becoming less able to improvise, and more dependent on buying things ready-made.

Does anyone have pics or anything about Crawley Island? My Grandmother is a Murphy, from 1 of the first 5 families on Crawley island. I never got to meet her, my Grandparents moved the family from Long Harbour to Nova Scotia, and she died when my Mother was 5. I’d give almost anything to learn more about her, and to know my Great Grandfather Michael Murphy and my Great Great Grandfather Patrick Murphy that came from Wexford Ireland.. I love Newfoundland!❤️ I’m not well enough to travel there. But it would really be wonderful to know anything about them.

Good bit of fish. How big was it. Somewhere around 1987 we brought in 50,000 lbs one day but a good half was under 18 inches and thrown over the side.

Go take a gander through Riverhead to Peter's River. If there was a drop of riches then, you'd never tell now.
