I went to this show at the Gagosian Easter weekend 2013. I cried. I couldn't believe I was in the presence of these paintings that I'd looked at a million times in books. It was not about the paintings. I just realized how lucky I was to be myself, carrrying on dancing to the beat of of every rhythm, every line, every nuance. Thank you, JMB. I know you better than I thought. Amen.
Very nice collection Basquiat was a very talented commentary artist, to a person with a untrained eye and not much knowledge towards what good art is, would say these are just scribbles and that a child can draw them... A truly wrong statement. The thoughts and color selection and perspective behind these master pieces are truly genius reminds me a little of how the ancient aboriginals drew in caves in Australia.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this. Many of us don't have the ability to travel to the exhibits of Basquiat's works. What a treasure. His love of creating just roars out of the canvas.
@MarkMiles Art is in the eye of the beholder, but the art world decides what's art and what's not. The price tag comes along. It's a bubble of farts, since Duchamp came around. You can see the talent of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Van Gogh and Matisse . Picasso and Kandinsky are already a bit harder to grasp for a lot of people, but they can say: hey, I'm not that creative' and admire the usage of colour. The same goes for Mondriaan and Vasarely, although some people may already mumble the worst cliche in the world: my little nephew can do that. No, he can not. The real shit began with Jackson Pollock. Is that art or just destruction? Culminating in the smegma Jeff Koons peels off his foreskin. The last 50 odd years, its bon ton to like abstract art, but imho we're now entering a phase we're your being ridiculed for not seeing the brilliance of utter crap. The Emperor's New Clothing. And the art dealers laugh. But remember, half a century is really not a even a ripple in time.
Elmira Abbasova yes his style was like a kid in grade school. Scribbled shit. The imagination is there but the artistic skill and rendering is completely absent.
Has anyone made the impact Basquiat did in there mid twenty's? Why is he so hidden in the inner city. It took me to long to find out about this genius artist of the streets. I grew up on the tough streets of Miami, with Puerto Ricans and Haitians and never seen his work. I hope it has nothing to do with his skin color!
would you believe that this shit sell for 100s of million of dollars for just one painting...i bullshit you not , last month at sotherbys a basquait painting sold for 150 million dollars...time to break out the crayons and start sribbling
He was good at scribbling. But, clearly had no sense of perspective or basic drawing skills. I'm amazed people compare him with Van Gogh. Vincent is several stratospheres above Jean-Michel when comparing technical ability. I saw this show in person and I got the sense that people were stunned silent after realizing just how bad the work is when you actually see it in real life. Clearly this guy only cared about one thing... getting high.
sorry i cant understaund this. for me every kid in this planet can make a job like this, i think this is about money and snobism. i know he is not a kid because he can write and put some things like tesla coil and references to charlie parker and miles, but for other reasons i insist: every kid in the planet can do it a job like this
tambien hay perros y perros, adultos y adultos, sombreros y sombreros, chinos y chinos....la verdad me senti abrumado por tu capacidad de argumentacion.
***** "Art spectator: "My child can draw better than this." The auteur John Waters: "Then they should have."" i'd say they have. they just don't have a warhol conning the world into thinking this is art.
Everyone has a different sense of perspective depending on your experiences in life & how you were raised as far as having basic drawing skills that has nothing to do with art, that actually pertains to coloring books by numbers , Picaso did'nt draw perfect faces either , You obviously know nothing about True art - Its about how it makes you feel , its not a fuckin picture , His art speaks to me like no other ,he is the greatest of our time , and we who love him are more than u who dont .
vickyenamorada You ignorant shallow ass...ass! Yes Banksy is a creative and clever artist. But he is a Stenciler, and one that points out the obvious. Basquiat is genius... a true artist with true street cred. Most true street graf artists despise Wanksy and his stencils. Basquiat invokes indescribable emotion with creamy bright eyepleasing color that can still leave one feeling dirty. Banksy is pure entertainment. Now run along, a Kardashian just did something that you simply must emote on facecrook

So incredibly powerful, raw and primal art.
Genius.
Theres nothing primal in his paintings
@@rocco7637 There's nothing worth a shit in his paintings, not even the shit.
@@rocco7637 Primal does not = primitive. Primal means that they hit primal, deep, deep emotions in us that are primal to the human experience.
i am so sorry i missed this exhibit, but thank you for bringing me there via youtube

An artist pours his soul into a work and the fickle public searches for meaning. And in the searching finds themselves.

I got to him, and he taught me about color theory. I am actually Robbie L SIlva Jr. The collaboration we did together was Hollywood lions.
+Michael Faure-Brac Never heard of you.
oh it was my friend Robbie L Silva Jr and Avril Sutton, that work with Jean Michel Bisquat "Hollywood Lions" it was in the 1970s.
+Michael Faure-Brac Sorry for being so rude.
That was uncalled for.
